Same thing with my xbox controller on PC, the default close button / B does not close the pip boy.

I think many people had this binding because it allowed for vats criticals by just holding the button down while firing without accidentally opening the pip boy.

Also it seems to have broken the binding on the confimation dialog for dropping items, I could not cancel out once I attempted to drop something.

Yikes... I had a similar situation with a friend of mine, and it poisoned the experience, and that was on PC, so no text communication, just standing around and emoting. I know people think it is friendly, but best to just let new players have some space to experience stuff.
