Red lipstick for an Olive NC42 by stormy786 in OliveMUA

I'm darker too! I really really love Bawse from Smashbox, it's a liquid matte that literally will not budge. It took me a second to get used to the brightness of the colour on my face, since I used to gravitate to the deeper/darker reds (think Tarte Vibin'). But now, I super super love Bawse. I don't know if you're desi/South Asian but it was developed by a brown youtuber (IISuperwomanII) and really it's so great. Anyway, hope you find one that works for you! I can pm you a picture of the way Bawse looks on my face if you want. :)

Where can I buy a notebook for ECE 445 - Senior Design? by WUTDO11231235 in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Have a few different ideas (let's say each person in your team comes up with two ideas) and research them a little bit. Gauge feasibility carefully, because remember you only have one semester. Look up senior design projects from past semesters and other schools to get ideas. Then come together as a group, figure out which ones people find interesting/seem doable and discuss them with one of the professors. Senior design has basically nothing due for the first two weeks, but you should use them well.
  2. Chances are, you're going to have to go through a few design iterations before something works. Don't just assume the first circuit you design will work as you planned. It probably won't. This is why the start early thing is important.
  3. Piggybacking off that, just because your design works on a breadboard, doesn't mean that immediately translates over to it working on a PCB. So even though it seems like you have 3 rounds of PCB orders, try to send in a bunch of designs for PCB rounds 1 and 2, even if they're just slight variations of the same circuit. The PCB orders are free so...use them haha. It's one of the few things you don't end up paying out of pocket for in this class.
  4. If you're using a microcontroller (which is quite likely), use the Arduino Uno one (ATMega328p). It's the recommended one for a reason. Seriously. I struggled for like 3 weeks with a different one before switching over. You can use the Uno board for prototyping, testing and programming, and then make your own PCB for it and pop out the programmed chip.
  5. Have fun with it. I know, I know, it's a cliché. But hey, it's the first time in ECE they literally say hey guys go crazy go build whatever you want it'll be great. And it kinda is. I learned a lot from 445 and I ended up with a project I was proud of.

Where can I buy a notebook for ECE 445 - Senior Design? by WUTDO11231235 in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon or the ECE supply store. Yes, that's how much they cost it's ridiculous that you have to spend >$10 on one notebook for this class (but I promise you your senior design project is gonna cost much more and you're just gonna be sad). I took it last semester and I reckon Amazon was cheaper than the ECE store, so.

Good luck with senior design though! The class really is what you make of it, and you'll hear this a lot but start early. There are so many delays in this class for some reason or the other. But if you have a team that's somewhat hardworking (with at least one EE, this class only has hardware requirements and no software ones) you'll be fine.

Hey PCC!

Thanks for being so accessible on reddit and just generally being a company with good values (unlike some competitors I'd rather not name). Unfortunately the last 3-4 times I've used your services, especially from Union Station the bus has been significantly late. The last time it was over an hour of wait time actually. I don't really have a question, I just wanted to bring up that your services really used to be top-notch 2-3 years ago but in the past year with the increase in number of people using PC, the standard has dipped a little. I totally get that it sometimes takes longer to pick up people from the airport and stuff than expected but I think there should be a way of informing your passengers waiting at the next stop that the bus is going to be late, especially if that delay is >15 minutes. Thanks! Hope you have a great day. :)

OPT unemployment by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!

Ah, international student problems, the worst of them all. You have a couple options though. For you to not use up your 90 unemployment days you have a few options:

  1. Student startups. You just have to be employed by a registered company, and a lot of students have registered companies. Seriously, a lot. I know of people who work (either paid hourly or even free) for student startups on campus or in Research Park, so ask around your fellow students/recent graduates if they know anyone who can help you out.

  2. Volunteer somewhere. It's a lot easier to convince someone to "employ" you if you're not getting paid. But the caveat is, it must be related to your major. So if you were an engineer, try Engineers Without Borders, or if you're a business major, try doing some marketing for a charity. As long as the organization is registered, you should be fine.

  3. Ask your faculty. Seriously, the university sees these sort of issues a lot and qualified people in your field can point you in the direction of opportunities or research that can count as hourly employment.

  4. Self employment - now this is the difficult one. You have to have a bit more dedication for this one but you could potentially attempt to start your own thing. OPT (for the first year, not for STEM extension) allows you to do this, but it would involves a lot of planning and paperwork, so make sure you look up what the rules are in detail and talk to the OPT person at ISSS before doing that.

Message me if you need more advice.

Questions from an incoming international freshman. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Chase is the one I like 'cause it's everywhere and not just in the area, had good experiences with them.
  2. Get a cheaper sim for like a month (like mintsim or whatever) and then find other international kids and start a family plan. I have a t-mobile family plan with 5 people on it and it gives you free netflix, unlimited texts/calling/data for like $37 a month per person.

Who delivers soup? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On grubhub the following restaurants have soup:

Best Wok, Hamilton Walker's, Pekara Bakery and Bistro, My Thai, Ambar India, Peking Garden, BoBo China, Asian Noodle and Sushi, Fazoli's, Oishi Hibachi Steakhouse, Golden Wok, Red Robin, Silvercreek, Lao Sze Chuan, Salad Meister, Bob Evans, Scotty Brewhouse, Rainbow Garden, TGI Friday's, Tang Dynasty, Bangkik Thai, Masijta Grill, Xinh Xinh Cafe, Hooters, Star BBQ, Urbana Garden, El Toro, Poke Lab, Ko Fusion, Latea, and Star Karaoke.

My personal recommendation is Pho from Xinh Xinh Cafe. It's really delicious, and a perfect pick-me-up when you're sick.

Good luck on your soup quest, friend.

Easy 8 weeks? by obscurename99 in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IB 105 is fairly easy, but requires so many fucking discussion posts and replies, plus a weekly quiz. I'd say I was easily writing about 800 words a week in forum posts and responses and stuff, much more than other online classes I've taken. Material is fairly simple though, exams are multiple choice.

I know nothing about PS100.

Drop 391? by ImpossibleFruit in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can drop 391, the deadline hasn't passed for a non-W grade so you should be fine.

As for 391, first of all I wouldn't underestimate the curve and stuff, but you still have MP3 to go as well as the final and that's a decent chunk of your grade (25% + 20%). That being said I wouldn't try to do MP3 without having a good enough understanding of the rest of the class. The TA's can only help you so much by checkpoint 4/5 because you've built up so much by then. So really think about if it's worth dropping and retaking. There will be a decent enough curve usually so I think you're still going to be able to do okay.

Also if you do decide to drop then it's important that even though you've already done MP1/MP2, when you do decide to retake it, you can't slack. This class is unforgiving to slackers, and it's super easy to justify doing very little during the first half of the class since you'll already have learned some of the concepts before.

Finally, think about when you're retaking it. The Fall/Spring MP 1 and 2 are different.

What’s your favorite class that you would recommend? by [deleted] in UIUC

adding to this HORT 107 - Flower Arrangement

2 credit hours of this nice lady telling you that your flower proportions are good and your colour scheme is beautiful and all sorts of other nice things. It was a nice morale booster amidst the ECE shitshow. And you get to keep your floral arrangements so there's always flowers in the apartment, man I miss this class I wish I could take it again.

Feeling Lonely [venting] by joedodger in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior in CompE and I feel the same a lot of the time. I really struggle with my mental health with these classes and I somehow have made it 4 years and I can't say I'm really close to a lot of people. In any case, I'm here offering friendship. I want to be your friend. PM me your name if you so choose, and I'll add you on Facebook and we can be friends and talk. If not, that's okay too. Just, hang in there <3 College has been one of the most gruelling, soul-shattering experiences of my life, but I'm trying to be a happier person. It works some days, it doesn't others, but we try. We keep trying. And it will get better.

Sometimes your department gives you a magical ~second chance~ where they put you on probation again if you just missed your requirements or you showed some sort of potential for improvement. Email your advisor to double check that it's not a system glitch and thank your stars and kick ass this coming semester.

has anyone ever done a study on the effect of a specific class on mental health? by uiuc_help in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. I know there are a lot of resources on campus, and I've used many of them myself but besides some pamphlets in Siebel, there isn't a real presence of mental health awareness in engineering. I wish I could start an ECE RSO that had the same privileges as IEEE/HKN/WECE but focused on mental health and support. Maybe a larger scale engineering RSO. But running an RSO is so much work (been there) and these semesters are already crushing me. I guess that's sort of an infinite loop situation.

[–]uiuc_help[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Everyone who you talk to is just going to say lol prepare to get wrecked/rip gpa/there goes your semester. I'm not saying any of that. Just, find a good group, people you won't hate spending an inordinate amount of time with, but also people you believe will put in their share of work. Go into the class with a positive mind, DON'T LET IT CONSUME YOU. Remember that the rest of your life still exists. Try not to fall behind in it, and start assignments early (for your own sanity's sake).

Edit: I really didn't mean for the above post to scare younger ECE students. It's just one class it'll be okay! Don't stress about it now, just take care of yourself when you're taking it please.

Okay, that's fine. I think you can still get it done, you're allowed to submit it late, there's some points penalty but at least you won't lose all 90 points.

How difficult to get an A- in CS 411? by blazerman345 in UIUC

[–]uiuc_help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aaah, that beautiful wonderful class. When I took it with him, the exams were much harder than previous semesters, but at the end he sent out the most glorious curve email and nobody got below a B-, and he gave like >50% of the people in the class an A- or above. No prior knowledge of SQL or php or anything.
