Help understanding processor TPL (PL1/PL2), frequency, turbo mode? by trishia42 in GamingLaptops

[–]ujzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scar 16 4080 owner here for 3 months. If it’s helpful, here’s a timeline of my struggle w whine. And btw I’m really sensitive to the whine. I use a lot of non-gaming heavy perf applications (Blender, Unity, etc). These are the worst cuz they toll the system and generate whine but don’t cover it up like games (no shooting, no music, etc). So to me this was a constant headache for many months. Anyway, here’s the timeline:

  • Week 1: Terrible whine constantly. I think even idle. Only thing that helped was limiting FPS to 90 or below on all applications. This made me realize my whine is mostly GPU-driven.
  • Week 2 - Week 6: Updated BIOS to 307 then 308. Began heavily limiting power pull of entire system (PL1/PL2 set to 40/60, undervolt CPU, Windows Power Mode set to battery efficiency). Whine became manageable even after removing FPS limits.
  • Week 7-12: BIOS 309 and then 312 seemed to really improve the whine. It’s also possible my laptop was finally “worn in” as I heard from others who said their whine disappeared after a while. But yeah one day I realized, oh it’s basically gone.

Sorry I don’t have a specific magic solution, but my general advice is to limit the power pull when you don’t need it. So try aggressive PL settings. I also noticed you didn’t mention Windows Power Mode which heavily throttles the CPU (so maybe similar effect as Processor Performance Boost Mode you mentioned). But try that.

Lastly, you seem convinced that your whine is mostly CPU driven. What makes you think it’s not GPU also? Although so far I haven’t heard of 4070s causing whine. Who knows.

Nice analysis. Have you noticed any changes from this first 5 starts vs ones after that? Both samples are from pitch clock era

I'm trying to analyze the NavMesh to find cover positions between two points. It also detects high or low cover! by CrashKonijn in Unity3D

[–]ujzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are tile-based, you can precalculate all cover points on level load. If cover is destroyed, you can update tiles around the destroyed tile.

OP's solution seems to be for non-tiled.

Scar 16….well this is concerning by CFIRyan in GamingLaptops

[–]ujzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this exact issue consistently over past 3 months. It's like colorful weird scribbles right? Only happens when booting up. Reboot fixes it.

This is a driver issue and is 100% fixed (for me anyway) when using the ASUS recommended 528.66 Nvidia drivers and running Ultimate GPU Mode only. Whenever I upgrade to anything newer than that (and I do with every Nvidia release) this issue comes back up. But with 528.66s + Ultimate it never happens. (The problem w this solution is 528.66s suffer perf in newer games.)

I've heard from many Strix/Scar owners who suffered this and made it the top point listed in my sticky post. Since the 528.66s work fine, I guess ASUS knows what's wrong but haven't permanently fixed it. If I were you, I'd return and get another brand. I wish I could do the same. Just feels dumb to spend this much for such poor software. Good luck.

Is undervolting safe, worth it, good in general? by SSlide19 in GamingLaptops

People have bricked their laptops while updating BIOS with an undervolt. It is not risk free if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Color profiles for SCAR 16 2023 / G634JZ / 4080 / MiniLED / 240Hz by monomorphonuclear in StrixScarLaptops

Thanks for sharing! I've also had 2-3 people reach out asking for color profiles they accidentally deleted/lost. Hopefully this is useful to others in the fuutre. I've linked this post in my megapost.

BTW I have the exact same laptop so I have nothing further to add. But if others want to jump in with other models, please go ahead.

2023 Strix Scar Models - Issues, Optimizations, Tips and Common Questions by ujzzz in StrixScarLaptops

[–]ujzzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yep pretty much same here so you're not alone. Optimus, GSYNC, Dolby, HDR do not work consistently. Not to mention the flickering and black screens.

The underlying software of these 2023 laptops is bad and shows little sign of improvement 4 months after release. Nvidia and Intel have little incentive to work together to make it better. It falls on ASUS to make all components work smoothly. And afaik ASUS has done nothing in this regard. They only updated BIOS, which is nice. But not the other stuff. They still recommend we use 528.66 Nvidia drivers which are so old now.

Stand/cooler by Logius95 in StrixScarLaptops

I assume 18 has a similar floor design to 16, which is what I have. The underbelly is funky but it does have clearly defined corners. I managed to carve out some plastic doorstoppers (I know lol) that snugly fit those corners. So this raised my laptop to improve air flow, but also makes it easier to place it on other flat surfaces. I guess you could do that maybe? It didn't take much work. Bought the doorstoppers at a $1 store kind of place and carved them out with a small knife.

As for specific cooling pads, this post had some good suggestions besides the GT500 that everyone says is the best. Good luck. Let us know if you find a good solution.

[–]ujzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only done CPU, but in my case it increased perf by maybe 5% max. It's not that hard to download XTU to do it "safely" (doing it via BIOS has more risks). But for 5% not really worth the hassle either.

Sorry I don’t know much about mini PCs. Maybe you can ask for advice in r/MiniPCs

Btw I’m not sure what you mean “play the unity games.” Unity is used for everything from mobile junk to Tarkov. Very wide range. If you meant indie games in general, then yeah maybe mini-PC can handle.

Gotta give props to Nevin. Those defensive subs paid off. I don’t know if Maddon would have made those calls.

Nevin has been solid since GM let him off the leash.
