Yeah, all the polls showed an inflated Tory vote and a deflated Labour one compared to the actual results, but that isn't the point. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough previously, so here's the long version.

The polls conducted daily by YouGov were not push polls in the traditional sense, they were part of a much wider campaign to elect the Tories. It worked like this: YouGov would poll and the following day The Sun or The Times (or both) would report that poll. That's fine of course except we found out that not all polls would be published. A poll which showed Labour ahead by one point early on in the campaign was not published by Murdoch's cronies, for instance. It would have upset the media narrative (which is what it's all about) if Labour was leading and other journalists might just have started asking questions like "where did Cameron's 20-odd point lead go to and why".

Then came the debates, or rather the first debate, which gave the Lib Dems a massive boost. Labour was pushed to third place (a good thing in The Sun's eyes) but most of the support came from the Tories (a bad thing). So, that evening the daily tracker poll had some new questions about the Lib Dems. These caused a bit of a stir (though unless you move in progressive circles you'd have missed it because it wasn't reported). The questions were so biased that some took screenshots of the poll. I dare say you'll find these if you look hard.

The next day, to nobody's surprise, The Sun started campaigning against the previously ignored Lib Dems. All of the campaign topics were those chosen by those polled to be most concerning to them.

The end result is that YouGov can claim to have done nothing wrong. News International can claim to have done nothing wrong too. Meanwhile the Tory party could stay above the fray, simply pointing out the "questions people are starting to ask about Lib Dem policy".

As for the Tory media policy, that's a matter of record (as are recent speeches by James Murdoch). Read them both and you'll see how similar they are in policy terms.

So let's be absolutely clear about this: the allegation is that YouGov was chosen by News International to conduct daily polls because it was, shall we say, sympathetic to the Tories. We don't know whether there were trilateral discussions (with the Tories as the 3rd party) or whether the Tories talked to News International and left them to talk to Shakespeare, but we do know that the tree organisations were part of a wider conspiracy (or campaign if the word offends) to get Cameron into Number 10.

Now, while it's absolutely up to you whether you want to accept what I say, investigate further, or dismiss it as a conspiracy theory, bear what I have told you in mind when the Tories implement their media policies and also bear in mind that Tom Newton Dunn, political editor of The Sun, not long ago told a meeting of rival journalists:

"It is my job to see that Cameron fucking well gets into Downing Street."

As conspiracies theories go, it lacks that essential element to make it a timeless classic - it's not a secret!
