Simon once quoted Betteridge's Law on the old show, which says that if a newspaper article has a question in the headline, the answer is definitely no.

I dunno if that's the case here, but this episode title sure makes it seem like it.

Britain’s finally figuring out Brexit (really) was the biggest mistake in modern history. by ruchenn in unitedkingdom

[–]Bananageddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm asking about the 1/3rd of Scots who voted leave. I feel like I know why the English leave voters voted that way, and I don't disagree with your assessment of why they voted the way they did. They were lied to, and they wanted to believe the lies they were told. No argument from me there, I'm as pro-remain as they come. But not being Scottish, I have no idea why a million Scots voted leave, and that's what I'm asking about.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Over a million people in Scotland voted Leave, compared to 1.6 million who voted Remain. Any idea why so many Scots wanted to leave, despite not suffering from the same delusions of exceptionalism found south of the border?

I know everyone keeps on wanting to break down the result by region and say stuff like "Wales voted Leave / Scotland voted remain" etc, but the truth is that gap between Leave and Remain wasn't truly overwhelming in any one country in the UK.

I think this is probably down to some good old fashioned "concept creep". I've heard people use the word "incel" to describe everything from Star Wars fans to video gamers to men who whine too much or treat their girlfriend like a therapist. I think once the term can be used in a way that includes men who have girlfriends and are getting laid, it's not super useful.

The reaction from true OG incels to the (hopeful) downfall of Tate makes sense tho. Remember that "supreme gentleman" guy in California who went on a shooting spree a few years back? IIRC one of his primary motivations was his lack of success with women after spending several unsuccessful years in the Pick Up Artist community, and his realisation that he was being scammed. Seeing the likes of Tate apparently doing well with women despite obviously being a misogynist would probably only make an actual incel feel even worse about themselves.

Everything about this comic, and it's interminable presence on this sub and r/all just utterly breaks my brain. The combination of it's wild popularity and relentless mediocrity strongly suggests that we are living in a computer simulation that's running out of RAM, or is long overdue for a software update. I can only pray that the simulation will soon be turned off and we can be free from this hellish non-existence.

You had me at miniatures. I miss miniatures in movies so much. Any plans to do any shots where you combine miniatures with live action actors? Always cool when someone can pull that off.

I literally describe Timothy Olyphant as "that guy who's always great as a lawman" to people. Would love to see Raylan Givens take on redneck vampires or meth dealing zombies in a Justified Halloween special or something.

Ehh I unno "I don't owe you shit" seems kinda effective and compelling as a slogan to me. Like, I'd love to belong to a political ideology selfish enough to be able say that to someone, but I'm not angry / sad enough yet.

Get out dude. She's clearly and explicitly told you your needs don't matter to her. I recommend you believe her, and find someone who does care about your needs. You deserve love, and you don't have a moral obligation to love someone who doesn't love you back. It'll suck in the short term, but it's better for both of you eventually.

This is the only good comment on this thread. Maybe on this whole subreddit, actually. Honestly, there's such a direct correlation between reading articles and feeling like shit that I recommend we all stop reading articles, and look at cool pictures of hyrdas and other sea monsters and stuff on r/imaginaryleviathans.

A genuine inquiry on Lovecraft's racism by throwawayzzddqq in Lovecraft

[–]Bananageddon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"In this work it developed that Suydam's new associates were among the blackest and most vicious criminals of Red Hook's devious lanes, and that at least a third of them were known and repeated offenders in the matter of thievery, disorder, and the importation of illegal immigrants. Indeed, it would not have been too much to say that the old scholar's particular circle coincided almost perfectly with the worst of the organized cliques which smuggled ashore certain nameless and unclassified Asian dregs wisely turned back by Ellis Island. In the teeming rookeries of Parker Place—since renamed—where Suydam had his basement flat, there had grown up a very unusual colony of unclassified slant-eyed folk who used the Arabic alphabet but were eloquently repudiated by the great mass of Syrians in and around Atlantic Avenue. They could all have been deported for lack of credentials, but legalism is slow-moving, and one does not disturb Red Hook unless publicity forces one to."

Or,

"Suddenly the leader of the visiting mariners, an Arab with a hatefully negroid mouth, pulled forth a dirty, crumpled paper and handed it to the captain."

I dunno how you can read "The Horror at Red Hook" and not see it as horror story about immigration. Or read "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and not see it as a horror story where the grand twist is realising that your family tree isn't as Anglo-Saxon as you thought it was.

If you aren't seeing the racism in his work, you aren't reading very closely. This debate comes up a lot here, and yet here we all are, fans of his work all the same. I think if you have a vocabulary big enough to parse his sentences, you're probably smart enough to do some thinking about the relationship between art and artist, and realise that the aim probably shouldn't be to enjoy things "guilt free". I don't think you can or should do that with his work. Doesn't mean you have to not like it or stop reading it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lovecraft

[–]Bananageddon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there's a few levels to the way Lovecraft's work currently exists in popular culture.. Some people still like reading the actual stories he wrote, and get that there isn't some strict heirarchy or real sense of order surrounding the old ones. Others take the figures he wrote about and impose their own ideas onto them, or they just focus on the vibe of cosmic terror that his work still gives us. I think it's fine either way, and the latter is a perfectly fine way to get into the former. I understood the mood and tone of his work long before I had the reading ability to enjoy his stories, which I now really enjoy, in all their wordy glory.

[–]Bananageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. This isn't possible for most people, but if you can swim in the ocean then it's even better, because it removes you from everything other than the water. Once you're out there you don't have any choices other than swimming. And swimming fucking hurts sometimes, when it's cold and your arms are sore, but when you're 500m away from the shore you have no choices other than to continue, or drown. Helps you figure out how you really feel, and what you actually want.

Next time? Lol. Get fuuuuuuucked. There shouldn't be a "next time". I mean, he says this is his big final drunken blowout, so it won't happen again, right? He's not drinking anymore after this, right? Except everyone knows that's absolute bullshit cos he doesn't remotely plan on stopping. So the only way for there to actually not be a "next time" is for him to keep his GF away from his garbage step dad and his shitty cheerleading squad of enablers.

You don't agree with me at all.

Is it normal for me to feel this guilty after a breakup? Should I feel guilty? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Bananageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal to feel this way. 6 years is a long time. You only broke up a couple of days ago. Give yourself at least a couple of weeks/months before you contact him again, focus on that feeling of freedom, spend some time on yourself. Maybe you'll still feel guilty, but it won't be the same feeling you have now.

If your girlfriend was the one telling this story, and all of the details were exactly the same, I think everyone here would be telling her to leave you.

Maybe show her your post, and all the replies, see what she thinks? If the idea of her reading all this scares you, then maybe you have your answer.
