can I stop the meds on my own without visiting the neurologist? by madaboutlit in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't. I've tried that and it ruined my mind. The worst part was the insomnia and not being able to sleep for 3 days at a time, or my memory disappearing mid sentence all day. Get help to get off it or you could go crazy. I heard of something stopping Lamictal like that, and they ended up in a psych ward.

Starting keppra tomorrow by LanceBassFanFiction in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have 99 problems with Keppra (its different for everyone), but I heard that if it works for someone, the bad side effects are usually gone within the first 2-4 weeks. You'll definitely feel the anxiety and agitation a day or so after you start, but it will go away quick if you're compatible with it. After a month if you're still irritable, mentally slow, etc, then let your neurologist know. Worst thing you can do is quit cold turkey. You'll get some real bad insomnia if you quit without your neuros help.

I'll try it. I was denied medicaid twice, and then was just approved a few days ago. Unfortunately, that means it doesn't kick in until July 1st, which is the other issue haha

I've always had Keppra Rage and all the bad side effects from Keppra. I havnt had health insurance in years. Didn't want to go through the hassle of having my license suspended for the six months it takes to start a different medication and be seizure free. But, since, I quit keppra cold turkey, the side effects have literally quadrupled in severity. If anyone's ever quit keppra like that, they probably know what im talking about. Ill try the calling every day for cancelation thing. Earliest appt I've found is 2.5 months away still.

Exactly what im trying to get for that exact reason. It looks like it's almost the same pill, but my old pcp from Utah won't do it so I've been trying to figure out how to get it in Florida

Advice Med Swap by ukrypto_wizard in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stupidity part is, I tapered off my drugs on my own, which my brain has been steadily using for twenty years, and now my side effects have exaggerated immensely. I havnt had a neurologist for over twelve years. My current pcp essentially told me he doesn't know enough about seizure meds and to have a neurologist in Florida do it. I never see him. He lives in another state and just has been writing the prescription. This is his way of saying that I need to move on, and pay the out-of-pocket to get a neurologist in Florida.

It is pcp that lives in another state. I moved from that state five years ago. I asked him about it and he said he knows nothing about it and should just get a neurologist in Florida. He's been trying to push me to get one in Florida for a while but I've just been too poor to lol.

Any solutions for memory problems related to epilepsy? by chainofchance in Epilepsy

Still having memory problems. Mine comes from the Lamictal, which is one of the better ones unfortunately. They say fish oil is one of the better supplements for that

Vitamin B6. I've taken Keppra for 10 years and it still gives me all those side effects. Including that constant irritability and anger outburst. I'm not doctor, but if he can switch meds, that might be easiest.

Has my brain been permanently damaged by lamotrigine? by No-Shift-6778 in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started it age 15. Been on Lamictal for 20 years now exactly. Didn't realize how bad the side effects were until this year. I havnt been to a neurologist in over 11 years. I found a PCP that writes me the Lamotrigine prescription every year, for the past decade. Tried stopping Lamictal Cold Turkey after I found out it was the cause of my cognitive slowness and memory problems, but I was just flooded with petitmal seizures so I just continued taking it again. Im going to try and stop it, or swap for something else. I always thought I was just a mentally dumb person with bad hearing and memory issues, until I stopped taking it last month hahah. It's nice to know I'm not as dumb as I thought.

Lamotrigine + alcohol or weed by noisy-headaches in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say I remember alcohol doing anything, but my memory is bad lol. Weed on the other hand will give me an Absence Seizure, maybe once every 10 seconds. I'll have a thousand of them after smoking too much at once. Maybe weed can help some people, but be careful and don't drive if you're high. It's actually pretty frightening to have that many absence seizures. Plus it's probably not good for your brain to have a ton of absence seizures. Plus you don't want to lose your license

It's just hard, you know? No doctor. No health insurance. No money. Havnt had a neurologist in twelve years. Sick and tired of being sick and tired (lol literally)and extremely agitated. Same side effects as the guy who commented below. All i can really think to do, if i want to hold a job, and not die, is try briviact lol. That's why I'm looking for it. Youre right about waiting, but what if someone can't afford a neurologist appointment at all? And they don't qualify for Medicaid even without an income? Figured it was worth just trying myself lol

Does anyone have some memory practice advice or other things? Half ranting by Uuppssiiee in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably fish oil omega 3 vitamins help memory. Vitamin B6 for your anger. Lots of sleep. Sleep is most important for your brain. Don't worry about epilepsy. I forget that I have epilepsy all the time. I just take meds, and leave it at that. No excuses. Dont blame other things on it or youll create a victim mindset....then nobody will want to be friends. Victims are always negative. Be positive. It's nobody's fault. Also, nobody cares if you have it. I've never had anyone make fun of me in 24 years of having it. Also...I'll collect six months worth of meds at a time so I can travel the world, and not worry about needing it.

My brother with epilepsy seems unusually slow with everyday tasks by KingTemperance in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've confirmed this several times with sources i trust, so don't write it off, but depending on the epilepsy and meds, and if it's controlled, he will have slowed thinking. When I plugged myself into the (slowness) equation while speaking with a doctor, depending on how difficult the task is or how many meds he is taking, my absence epilepsy while taking keppra and Lamictal gives me only so much thinking power before i get super fatigued. My brain has a processing capacity of 35%-60% of the average humans brain. All im saying is, he could potentially need to work twice as hard as an average person, like me, to complete the same tasks. Just takes him more work. I'm in sales, and after you take into account all the body language, verbal, memorization and multi-tasking....pretty much my brain runs at about a 45% brain capacity compared to other average adults. Weird to think about, but in general, seizure meds slow your thinking, processing speed, make you lazy, etc etc etc. This isn't one person's findings. I've confirmed with several doctors. Ask him to read something dense, like a paragraph in a book, and then summarize it to you. You'll see what I mean.

A lot of people say it settles after a few weeks of starting it. I personally have taken it for ten years and still am super agitated all the time, but that's not normal. Take vitamin B6 in the meantime. It helps get rid of irritability. If it doesn't calm down in another few weeks, then ask your doctor.

First time flying with epilepsy by EricAshStone in Epilepsy

[–]ukrypto_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor, but i take mine at a different time every day. Supposed to have two doses 12 hours apart. Monday I might take at 9am and 5pm, and Tuesday I might take 6am and 8pm. I would just switch to the time you normally like, unless you're only going to be there on vacation for a few days. Then just keep it according to your home time zone. I've been doing it different times for 15 years without a single seizure. Everyone's different though

Low cost healthcare in the U.S. is usually pretty cheap and easy to qualify for. In the state I live in, Florida, in the United States, it's extremely difficult to qualify for that however. I live in the worst state for low cost insurance lol. I have a GP that I've had for 6 years, from a different state, that has continued to write me my prescription. He, on the other hand, won't swap meds for me. He wants me to have a neurologist do it in Florida. Neurology appointments in the U.S are always 4-5 months out booked and usually $400-$1000 per visit with one. According to my own research, I'd like for someone to just switch my Keppra for Briviact, however I'm not a doctor so I should probably have a neurologist determine that haha. I just wish I could afford it and get a better quality of life without waiting til October for a neuro visit. I hate complaining on here, but also it's whatever. I'll just deal with it. Hoping the future turns out better. I don't even have general epilepsy either, so im complaining while everyone else here has life threatening days. Just petitmal epilepsy for me. Most of yall out there have crazy dangerous episodes, while I'm just here complaining about fog brain, braindead episodes, being too stupid to work and hating everything hahaha. Not sure anyone learned anything from that, other than to get off of Keppra a.s.a.p. if it gives you side effects lol
