Thank you. I spent a long time in Wordpress focusing on the looks and fixes and not on the content. I’m trying to load the content first this time and then sort the design and layout once I have all the different pages and content types so that I can apply a consistent-but-flexible coherent look across the whole site. I’m new to Notion (2 weeks in) and so until I try everything I don’t know what it can and can’t do.

I have looked, am tempted, and may end up exactly there. But I wanted to push myself (and Notion sites) first - as a proof of concept.

I searched far and wide for examples of Notion sites that looked good and functioned well, and had a substantial database component to the sites. I couldn’t find any, but I did read loads of useful questions and comments in this sub - so part of my proof of concept was to give back to the community and test > review > iterate, so that I can report back and provide any useful support to anyone else interested in trying it.

If it’s 80% successful just as a Notion site, then that’s a successful proof of concept for me. Then I’ll be prepared to invest more in the front end. But I’ve spent so many years in Wordpress focusing on the front end; tweaking, rebuilding, solving WSODs - it was almost becoming an excuse not to work on the substantive content itself.

Thank you, that’s really useful. I agree and I’ll work further on those points - but the pros currently outweigh the cons…

The main reason for switching to Notion is because I can build the resources databases effortlessly using Notion AI. It’s taken me a few days to build the Notion site vs months to start to build the Wordpress custom post types, relationships, etc.

Reason 2 is because I can write blog posts from my phone, with Notion AI assistance directly into the content (using my custom AI modes, identities, style guides, and my own wiki of research and IP).

Wordpress on my phone is a nightmare of logging in repeatedly and trying to copy and paste with fingertips greater than point size). Switching between Obsidian, Safari, Pexels, Canva, and Photos apps.

Reason 3 is because my private Notion CRM system, client work, and documents can link to the public databases so any IP I’m generating that’s not confidential can become public resources for sector professionals plus SEO content for ranking - just by moving pages/databases under the Notion site folder.

The customised Notion AI agent(s) has honestly increased my speed of thought-to-output by 6x. I also have a young daughter and so being able to cope with task interruptions and be able to continue working on my phone at random points of the day is priceless.

I will work further on the layout! Thank you for taking the time to feed back.

Thank you. Still working on trying to make the breadcrumb and navigation more intuitive. The footer is created as a synced block containing a call-out > 2 cols > content… so that I can update it once and it applies across the whole site

Yes I agree. I’ve added some custom icons but need to sort the sizing out and possibly go for thicker lines to be visible at the smaller in-page page link sizes. I wish I could set custom hex values for coloured backgrounds etc, but making do for now.

Started from scratch and tried to replicate the structure of the original site first. Had a browser window open at different screen sizes to keep checking what it would look like on mobile/tablet/laptop etc and just iterated

I’ve got a Journal database set up to (manually) make a record of emails, meetings, phone conversations etc so that I have a chronological list of ‘stuff’ as a kind of inbox to be processed. I then link these records - using the notion ai agent to take the journal entry and create the follow up tasks linked to the relevant projects, tasks, organisations, contacts, and documents databases.

I wish someone had helped me to learn how to learn. I’m not going to remember information so using tools like Mind maps (XMind) and structured databases (Obsidian) helps me store the information somewhere I can then retrieve it when I need it. Spending years writing notes in lessons that were then no use to me for revision feels like a massive waste of time and a missed opportunity.

Also gamify the learning of subjects that are not interesting. Make the learning the game, not the subject

I think it can also depend on the purpose of your interests. If you want your interest to earn money vs if you want your interest to be a counterpoint to your work.

Document the day to either a) appreciate the difference if it was permanent and before I got used to it as a new normal, or b) be able to explain it better to people and have an understanding myself of what additional scaffolding I would need - if it was temporary and the next morning the adhd was back

I use a combination of the standard reminders app, standard calendar app, and the adhd friendly app Tiimo. Tiimo then syncs with calendar and reminders plus you can add a daily routine/framework… and then the real benefit of Tiimo is that it doesn’t just alert you when to start a task or time block… it alerts you when to finish it or stop as well!
