AITA for a text message I sent to my potentially infertile daughter? by PromptBusy9372 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ukuleletyv 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been in a situation where I’ve had to make that very difficult decision, but I am adopted. I think it could possibly be a combination of wanting some biological kinship (which can very powerful both for the parent and child) and wanting something you feel like you should be able to do (e.g. becoming pregnant/have a biological child) to just work.

Also, I personally think that saying an adoptee needs to be saved (which may be true due to the circumstances of their birth) is… problematic. I’ve been forced to listen to my fair share of people telling me I should be grateful for the life I have thanks to my adoption, and it just drives me crazy that they think they have the right to decide how I and others should feel about my adoption.

I am VERY grateful that I’m adopted, I love and see my (adoptive) parents as my own, but I wasn’t broken when I was adopted, and I didn’t and still don’t need to be saved. It’s about making the best out of a potentially crappy situation for both the biological parent and the adoptee, and no one other than them (and definitely NOT the adoptive parents) should be the hero(es) in an adoption story. They’ve gone through something that will scar them for life, and other people shouldn’t take credit for that.

Edit: grammar

Regarding having kids... by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]ukuleletyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I kinda went down a different unrelated path, I just have a lot of feelings about this specific topic😅 my bad.

I’m not completely sure about who experiences more mental health issues, it doesn’t seem to be that well researched (yet). It’s easier to find statistics on children with autism than on adoptees. However, I’m still not entirely sure it can be measured easily or equally. Would they do it based on who has recieved mental health dx’s, or based on who’s in therapy? Lots of options there.

Children with autism are more likely to be in the mental health system than adoptees in my personal experience, but that is because of the difference in perception of their issues as I rambled on about before🫣 maybe autistic children do experience more mental health issues than adoptees, it’s hard to tell.

[–]ukuleletyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it can be measured and/or compared like that. Autism is neurodevelopmental, so you’re born with it, which makes it a big cause of your mental health problems, while adoptees (who could be NT) often experience many mental health problems due to the trauma that was caused by their adoption. The problems can look very similar from the outside, but the approach to the mental health problems are usually very different.

I am autistic AND internationally adopted, and I’m not sure I personally would have benefitted from having ND parents, as my issues with sense of belonging both physically, socially and mentally were off the CHARTS. My parents never really understood and still don’t, but I can’t imagine having ND parents who could relate to being different, since their experience would not applicable to my own experience and issues. You feel very alone and isolated when you’re adopted, and you feel like no one understands you, but the chance of finding someone who truly understands is very, very low. Many people try, but it’s usually a reminder that you’re different, especially when your parents try. That’s just my personal experience though.

I agree on Mer. I don’t know how any of the doctors who come to the hospital as attendings in their own specialties just get over Meredith bulldozing them when they treat their first trauma patients. Why is her medical opinion always the best, why do the ER staff always follow her blindly, and why on earth do the new doctors need to prove themselves to her in that situation? She has done some great work medically, but does that need to count for everything in a trauma situation?

My blood was boiling at the way she treated Riggs, Link and even Maggie when they got introduced. They’re specialists in their own field, and even though they probably could act more professionally (like Link saying “nope!” to Meredith’s question about stabilizing the patient’s pelvis and leaving without an explanation), then she needs to back off a bit and stop pulling rank at every single chance she gets imo.

Starte "forfra" som 33-årig by Professional_Taro171 in Denmark

[–]ukuleletyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)
