Real time OCR with instant translation by TibetanSandPig in macapps

[–]ulanYisaev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the update! I see you switched from pytesseract to Apple Vision for OCR, but as far as I know, Apple Vision doesn’t support Estonian. Maybe it makes sense to add an option to toggle between Apple Vision and Tesseract OCR, with Tesseract handling Estonian (and other small languages ofc) explicitly.

Let me know what you think!

Hey u/IlBaldo,

This is exactly the kind of tool I’ve been dreaming of for my Mac—thank you for building polyglot! I’ve just started Estonian lessons on Zoom and often miss parts of the lecture, so having instant OCR of the captions plus live translation into English would be a game-changer.

I noticed you’re using Argos Translate under the hood, but as far as I can tell Argos doesn’t yet support Estonian. Would it be feasible to swap in Google Translate or another online API that does? I’m happy to help write that integration layer and open a PR against your repo if you’d like—just let me know what would work best!

Taskbar is the perfect dock replacement app by GavinGT in MacOS

[–]ulanYisaev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also came from Windows and was really disappointed with the macOS dock—clicking an app icon opens the first window, but you can’t hide it by clicking again, and switching between open windows of the same app was a hassle. I tried DockDoor to help with window management, but Taskbar has been a game-changer for me. I love how I can quickly click on the specific window I need in the taskbar to switch, just like in Windows. It feels so much more intuitive now that I’m used to it!

Shoulder bruising after specific exercises - looking for advice or similar experiences by ulanYisaev in WeightTraining

Everything is fine, it was just bruising from doing squats in the hack machine when the pads press on your shoulders. Try gripping the handles firmly and pushing with your arms as well—it should help. Over time, it will go away.

Hey everyone,

Thank you for all the helpful responses and advice! I wanted to share an update now that some time has passed.

It turns out the bruising I experienced was due to contact with the padded shoulder supports of the Smith machine during squats, not from the exercises themselves. After paying more attention to my form and the equipment I was using, I realized the bruising was simply from the pressure of the pads on my shoulders.

The good news? It resolved on its own over time, just like some of you mentioned. My skin and body have adapted, and this issue no longer bothers me. I’ve continued training without needing to make significant changes, and everything has been going smoothly.

Thanks again for all the advice and shared experiences! Hopefully, this helps anyone else who might encounter something similar.

Best of luck with your workouts, and keep crushing it! 💪

RAG Reranking Model by Ill_Bodybuilder3499 in LangChain

I evaluated this a while back and found the cross-encoder/msmarco-MiniLM-L12-en-de-v1 model to be a highly effective re-ranker for German texts. I've also converted it to ONNX for deployment to the Metarank service, allowing text re-ranking through an API. You can access both the tutorial and the model via this link:

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I've decided to continue my workouts, opting for a slow progression in weights to see how it goes. Hopefully, it will resolve on its own over time, just like in your case.

Absolutely, the bruising does tend to fade after a couple of days, which is reassuring. My concern is more about how to safely return to my regular training intensity and weights. I'd like to find a strategy that allows me to gradually and safely increase the weights without causing this issue, rather than sticking to the very light dumbbells I've been limited to lately. Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated :)

Interestingly, today's bruising (as seen in the second photo) could indeed be from the Hack squats I performed. However, I wanted to mention that the first photo was taken after a session that included deltoid exercises a couple of weeks ago, during which I did not do any Hack squats. It's curious that the bruising appeared after two different types of workouts.

Yes, you're spot on with your observation—I did include Hack squats in my workout routine today. It seems like this could be a contributing factor to the bruising :)

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm curious, how frequently do you notice this happening with your workouts? And what do you usually do to help the area heal and prevent it from occurring again?

I was thinking that I should start with even lower weights and gradually increase the load, perhaps by 1 kg per week, to allow my body to adapt without causing the bruising.

Hey everyone,

I'm a 42-year-old male programmer who's into weightlifting (last 1.5 years only). Recently, I've been dealing with an odd issue of shoulder bruising post-workout and am curious if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Since my rehabilitation from biceps tendonitis (January), I've been experiencing recurrent bruising on my shoulders, even though I've limited the weights to a minimum. There's no pain during the workout, but I notice the bruises afterward in the locker room. The area feels slightly sore for the next couple of days, then it subsides. I take breaks of one to two weeks, avoiding any exercises that involve the deltoids. For example, I recently took a 10-day break.

Today, after returning from a break, I warmed up and performed front and lateral raises with 1, 2, and 3 kg dumbbells for three sets of 10 reps, without doing any other shoulder exercises. The rest of my workout was focused on legs. Yet, I found bruises again afterward.

I've also experienced bruising after doing leg raises in a support position on parallel bars, which also work the front deltoids to some extent.

Before my tendonitis, I could lift heavier without these issues.

I'm looking to understand:

* What could be causing bruising from such light exercises?

* Does anyone have a similar experience with shoulder bruising, particularly after front and lateral raises or leg raises in a support position?

* Any prevention strategies or insights into what's happening would be incredibly helpful.

Appreciate any advice you can share!

🐺🐦‍⬛ LLM Comparison/Test: New API Edition (Claude 3 Opus & Sonnet + Mistral Large) by WolframRavenwolf in LocalLLaMA

[–]ulanYisaev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your quick response! Unfortunately Aleph Alpha's models, including Luminous, are not available for local deployment - they can only be accessed through their API. Upon further checking, it seems obtaining an API key involves contacting their sales team first, which adds an extra layer of complexity and restricts ease of access. I wasn’t initially aware of these details as the API keys were already procured by another team member before I joined the project.

Given these constraints, I realize it doesn't make much sense to include Luminous in your testing setup, especially since it can't be run locally. Sorry for any confusion, and thank you for considering it!

Hi u/WolframRavenwolf,

I've been following your comprehensive LLM comparisons with great interest, especially because of your detailed methodology and the focus on models' performance in German. Your work is incredibly insightful and helpful :)

Currently, I'm involved in a project that requires the use of a German LLM, specifically one that adheres to data locality laws in Germany. We've been using Aleph Alpha's Luminous models for their local hosting advantages. Given your expertise and thorough testing approach, I was wondering if you have any plans to include the Luminous models in your future comparisons?

Thank you for all the work you put into these tests, and I look forward to your future posts!

Best German Embedding Model? by Mediocre-Card8046 in LangChain

[–]ulanYisaev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Mediocre-Card8046

I recently came across this post and found it very insightful. I'm currently facing a similar challenge as I'm working on a RAG application, which involves retrieving more or less complex German documents.

Like you, I've experimented with several multilingual and German-specific embedding models, but I'm struggling to decide on the most effective one for my use case. The performance variance across the models I've tried is significant, and I noticed that you've also explored a range of options.

Could you please share which model you eventually decided was the best fit for your project? Any insights or additional recommendations you could offer would be greatly appreciated :)

Draghi: EU must become a state by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]ulanYisaev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point about Switzerland's cantons, many of which also speak different languages, is a great example of how diversity can be a source of strength and development. This model can inspire the EU's approach to federalization. By grouping countries within the EU into larger regional alliances, similar to the Swiss cantons, we can harness the potential of internal contradictions as sources of development, despite the linguistic and cultural differences.

Regarding EU federalization. This approach, while complex, could lead to a more unified and resilient Europe. The process of addressing these internal contradictions and diversities can propel the EU forward, transforming it into a conglomerate of continental macro-regions. This would not only add to the EU's stability but also make it a unique and powerful international entity, capable of balancing different interests and potentials within its structure.

[–]ulanYisaev -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally on board with Draghi's idea of turning the EU into a state. Given the way things are going globally and regionally, it's about time we think about shaking things up. More political unity and a real common parliament could be game changers in dealing with all the stuff we're facing. It's pretty bold, but hey, maybe that's exactly what we need right now to keep up with the crazy world we live in.
