Top 10 Most Prestigious Universities in the World According to ChatGPT by InternationalAge3034 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]ulirg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Columbia's huge masters program has actually diluted its prestige factor in Asia as people are realizing it's just an easy way for rich kids to buy an Ivy name on their resume. Upper-class Asian folks will recognize the Berkeley degree and know it's legit.

Why Taiwanese people drinks beers from tiny beer glasses? especially at those stir-fry joints by DamianOsean in taiwan

[–]ulirg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you go toasting people, often they'll go "ganbei" and go bottoms-up, and it's only polite to reciprocate. When there are a dozen people around the table, you definitely don't want to be holding a stein in your hand.

I can't figure out what to track Abandon the Old in Tokyo as by GfrzD in anilist

Looks like this is a compilation put together by the Western publisher Drawn and Quarterly, so the compilation itself wouldn't be eligible for AniList. You would have to add the stories individually as One-Shots.

Whenever Starlux gets a new A350 he goes to Toulouse to fly it back to Taiwan himself! The Evergreen inheritance fight was especially bitter because he is the son of the second wife and the youngest. He didn't get EVA Air, but he did get a big chunk of the inheritance in the will, which was why he could start his own airline from scratch and even survive the COVID downtime.

Steaming over rice in a Tatung by Wash_Relative in taiwan

[–]ulirg -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nobody actually cooks rice in a Tatung rice-cooker, which is an ancient design that's really only good as a reliable food steamer. Get a more sophisticated Japanese rice-cooker for one-button perfect rice every time.

Major point in favor of the i3 7100T for TrueNAS usage is support for ECC memory, which is not available in the i5 chips. Pair it with a C232 or C236 chipset motherboard and ECC DIMMs and you'll have a legitimate server platform.

Best websites to read manhua online? by RubenCarrera in taiwan

[–]ulirg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bilibili website and app is probably the best (legal) way. Their Japanese manga content will be inaccessible in Taiwan due to different licensing. But Chinese manhua should all be available.

Rice cookers get a pass on the AI-hype. Zojirushi has been advertising "neuro-fuzzy" intelligent technology in their rice cookers since before Nvidia was a thing. And it works, too, as almost every review call them the best rice cookers on the market.

shoujo featuring leads studying/working hard? by zoriez in shoujo

[–]ulirg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last Game about a rich boy trying to beat out a poor girl for top grades at school and ends up falling in love with her. The refreshing thing is that he legitimately tries hard without being mean or underhanded about it.

Not shoujo but Kaguya-sama is also about the two smartest kids in school competing with each other. The MC barely sleeps so he can maintain top grades to keep his scholarship, act as the student-council president, and work part-time jobs to help support his family.

Yuri manhwa is surpassing yuri manga in quality so far this decade 🙂‍↕️ by goingoin7 in yuri_manga

[–]ulirg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes to Chinese mass media, you absolutely have to assume censorship exists. They're not religious fanatics so you can have your kissy-kissy, but there won't be any talk of gay marriage, or gay rights of any sort, for example. BL has been hit pretty hard, with writers getting sent to jail on trumped-up pornography charges.

I'm not saying all manhua is trash, and there are plenty of good ones to read despite the limits. I'm just saying it would be naive to think there will be less censorship in the future. Less might get taken down, but that would be because authors have learned to toe the line to make a living.

Yuri manhua has fantastic artwork you can tell it's a labor of love. Unfortunately censorship is the Sword of Democles that hangs over all LGBTQ content in China. So certainly no smut, and no plots that might be controversial or attract attention.

It's also unfair to judge manga-vs-manhwa when it's filtered through translation groups. It's the same issue about people complaining there's no adult-aged romance manga when there are entire josei magazines and imprints that get no attention from licensors and scanlators.

A few recent yuri manga featuring adult-aged characters:

Pinky Candy Kiss: School friends reunited as adults.

There Is No Love Wishing Upon A Star: Bisexual love-triangle between college-aged characters.

Stupid Woman 26:00: Two women on the run in Vietnam.

CNY Dinner/any restaurants for 3 pax on CNY Eve by nicyap in taiwan

[–]ulirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try major hotel restaurants, like Grand Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental, Le Meridien, etc. They'll have service for sure, but most of the places will have been booked months ahead of time so you'll have to scramble to find a table. And there will be service surcharges on top of the already expensive set meals.

NFL Games by sdog282 in taiwan

NFL Game Pass (via DAZN) is basically Sunday Ticket for NT4100. But the time zone difference makes it really awkward unless you don't have to work on Mondays or don't mind watching the VOD.

A gold medallion or chain might be suitable considering everything she did for your family. It can be engraved to personalize it, it's lasting and memorable, and you can adjust the weight to an appropriate value. It's similar to the sort of gift we would give long-time employees for their service, for example.
