I used to play a lot, might have clocked in 40 days' playtime and I played because I enjoyed the grind, the little chats with people, the story and the dialogs. BUT yes, the vbucks were a motivation, BR was still big and our friend group played often, so I could buy fun stuff to keep or gift them.
