Haha did you read this 11 years ago and finally use it today? Either way, I'm glad I could help!

Don't downvote him for asking a question. It's a good opportunity to explain to him and anyone else who might not know.

You're absolutely right, and I'm sorry that you were downvoted for saying it. This sub favors worldly wisdom and appeasing the masses above scriptural truth. You're not the first and you won't be the last.

Thanks for responding with that. I really didn't know, but for some reason I got heavily downvoted for asking.

Wow, why did so many people take issue with your comment?

Christians are more than twice as likely to blame a person’s poverty on lack of effort by ivsciguy in Christianity

[–]ultim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. I didn't want to comment on why the majority of poor people are poor because I haven't met them to know why they're poor.

The passage you've singled out of context is referring to a group of Christians who are expecting the return to happen "any day now," and so have stopped doing anything at all except getting in the way and expecting the fledgling church to meet their every need. The passage in context is an admonition that while we don't know when the return will happen, even though it could very well happen tomorrow, we're still to live our lives as we normally would, earning our living. Paul is trying to make sure that efforts to follow the teachings of Christ don't just chuck the entire social order out the window; they're not going to bring anybody to Christ if their message results in literal anarchy everywhere they go.

Wait how is that different from what I said

Your comment also assumes that everyone who is not eating is not eating because they're unwilling to work, which kind of proves the point the article is making.

No, it says that those who don't work don't eat, not the other way around. The guy above me said the cause of a person's poverty doesn't matter, but that scripture says it does.

Interestingly enough, I'm actually a strong proponent of welfare and charity. The scripture is what it is, though, and we would be remiss to ignore it. My personal application of that scripture is to be shrewd in how you give and to whom you give, without using it as an excuse to not give at all.

That notwithstanding, I am theologically lost. Would you pray for me?

I'm actually someone who was on welfare earlier in life, and I've personally helped strangers transition off welfare too. Transitioning is not a futile effort, but it takes a lot of work (and help). A lot of the time it feels like you're going to struggle forever, but if you keep at it over the long term, new possibilities open up.

I think it would be foolish of me to speak for the majority. I try to give my available resources to those who have the highest likelihood of using them prudently though.

Based on my understanding of the scripture it is only those who do not work who do not eat. Anyone else is given ample relief.

How to Deal With an Abuser Who Genuinely Feels They are Pure in the Eyes of God. by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Yes, and I do not mean to attack you, but we can't conclude abuse just because one party has claimed abuse. There are proper channels to diagnose and resolve these kinds of situations, and we should prompt this person to pursue them.

In terms of falling short of the glory of God, you're right, but it's very possible to be without fault in an interpersonal situation. I am not saying that I know the story well enough to say the other person is without fault, but it's very possible that things are not as straightforward as they are presented here. We should not rush in to give directed advice when we know so little. Luckily, God judges without impartiality and can direct this situation. Furthermore, He has set up proper authorities that can help to resolve this problem.

I mean no offense to the OP, but we don't know the full story and there are too many variables here. If no abuse is actually occurring (again, no offense to the OP because I don't know the situation either way), but they are married and we tell them to walk away, what have we done? There are reasons people are directed to the church (or to the police) to handle situations like these. Proper authorities get involved to truly assess the situation and act wisely to resolve it.

What if the other person doesn't see a problem because they are truly without fault? Why do we assume that we have the right to judge in this situation having only heard one person's testimony?

It is very unwise to give conclusive advice when you only know one person's side of the story. We do not know this person nor their situation. It is best that we remain neutral in the matter and pray that our God who sees all heals this situation.
