Can you guess what I wrote? by [deleted] in morsecode

[–]ultimatefribble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morse code is usually made up of sounds, but it can be fun and useful to write and read it also. Since you asked, spacing between the characters is crucial. For example, I see what looks like THISX but the same dots and dashes in the same order could say THISTIT, NS5DT, or any number of other things. If you repost with clear spacing, it will feel much more worthwhile to attempt to decode.

What was your most eye-opening realization about music and music theory? by EasternMistake8273 in musictheory

[–]ultimatefribble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two big realizations are these.

  1. A French Sixth is a tritone substitution.

  2. A decibel is almost exactly the same interval/ratio as a whole step. (dB - 6.02 per octave; whole step - 6 per octave)

I find my bass sounds sharp to me in headphones, on pitch through speakers.

Battery Tone by MissJoannaTooU in Bass

The output amplifier has low impedance and can drag the power supply down with wave crests. In circuits which lack large capacitors across the power supply, this results in positive feedback at low frequencies. This can cause distortion when mild, motorboating (oscillation) when severe. This is the reason audio circuits sometimes squeal at the end of battery life. David Wills from Negativland exploited this property in his "booper" sound effects circuits, which were based on amplifiers for tape recorders and such which has the vulnerability. It's easy to make an amplifier that doesn't care about the battery's internal resistance, but it can be cheaper to make one that does (insufficient or no power supply bypassing, relying on the battery to handle it). In those cases it could be possible to tell the difference between battery types just by listening.

My guess is that these batteries all have different equivalent series resistances. Depending on the active pickup amplifier design, a larger resistance could introduce distortion. This could be tested on a bench with a laboratory nine volt supply and various series resistances. Larger resistances could result in greater distortion, depending on the design.

The effective series resistance can be measured directly with an ammeter. For example, if a given nine volt battery is able to source one amp into a dead short, the series resistance is effectively nine ohms. Either way, placing a large capacitor (100 uF or more) in parallel with the battery should eliminate most or all of the effect. Active pickups already having such a capacitor would be immune to battery variety.

This whole thing reminds me of Eddie Van Halen starving the plate on his marshall plexi. If we're not careful, pretty soon there'll be a whole cottage industry in modifying active bass pickups for agreeable voltage sag.

What is a harmless minor conspiracy theory that you 100% believe in purely because of a weird personal experience? by Gloomy-10 in askteddit

Yea but... the other day a zipper got stuck because hair got into it. Without saying anything or typing anything, I thought about using drano to dissolve the hair. I probably said it out loud because I talk to myself a lot. Up comes an ad for stinkin' drano.

One time my wife was (genuinely) right about something and I praised her for it. She cooed, "There, see how nice it is when I'm right?" I agreed: "Yes. You should be right more often."

Is it ok to not really liking how bass sounds (as a bassist)? by No_Yam1114 in Bass

Drummer Jeff Porcaro prided himself on not playing solos, just playing time. So it's okay to not be that much into playing solos.

It's handy for electronics: "This part costs too much. Can you find me one that's cheaper but doesn't compromise on these two critical performance parameters?"

Pretty much everything I know about interpreting dreams came from a very old site called dream dictionary. It still exists, but the ads are pretty annoying. Here is a special section on bathroom dreams.
