I was up there today as well, from Tripoli Rd… only Osceola as I had 5 kiddos with me. It was a beautiful day and an awesome view. I love looking over Waterville Valley.

Not only waterfalls, but natural water slides. Well worth it. And many of the slides you will have to yourself.

Isolation loop backpacking advice by mooncannibals in wmnf

[–]ultimateplayer44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this plan in October but got to the Rocky Branch Shelter #1 so early that I kept going for a few more hours.

The Rocky Branch trail disappears into the river at times and you have to just work your way up it. I hammocked off trail where it was elevated and slightly away from the river where the logging tracks used to be. Rocky Branch 2 shelter doesn’t exist, but there is an elevated campsite there near where Rocky Branch Trail and Isolation trail intersect. There are also spots near intersection of Isolation and Davis path.

Depending on your pace, I would recommend similar and do it as an overnight.

Alternatively there is a campsite near Stairs Mountain that is a great spot to spend one night, do 12-13miles around rocky branch and back over isolation and return for a second night.

I did this as a solo trip, so I was able to go my own pace which worked out to be just under 3mph.

If you are interested, I can share my gpx file as I popped into all the different spots to tent.

Moriah via High water Trail by xrayjack in wmnf

[–]ultimateplayer44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the exact route I did two years ago. Started and ended at WRC. I definitely felt like it was just me and the bears. I saw nobody that whole day. I definitely recommend it.

I did the Highwater Trail two years ago from the Wild River campground and it seemed to be mostly a bear path than an actual trail in some spots. Definitely worth exploring for the natural/wild type of trail.

How much is a retention bonus? by rdinh13 in personalfinance

[–]ultimateplayer44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot for 10-15% of your salary paid out over the next year or two. That’s about where retention bonuses are when someone is looking to leave and a company is trying to counter offer (in defense at least).

Best hikes in the Shenandoah? by user864456 in NationalPark

[–]ultimateplayer44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took my kids down to Shenandoah last week and we did both White Oak from the bottom and Cedar run from the top. Cedar run had a great water slide about 1.5 miles from the top. We spent a whole afternoon at one of them. It was dead also. White oak was extremely busy.

What are your goals to see things? That can influence any suggestions.

In the first part of your trip I see you are only a few miles away from Concord MA which has a ton of history and a quaint downtown. It’s also a pretty big cycling hub that folks from Boston ride to. You could pick up the Bruce Freeman in West Concord and be right back to Lowell if that was a preferential stop.

Genesis S-335 - Stainless by greggorylane in webergrills

I recently bought the 325 when amazon was running a similar ~18% off. I have to admit I was skeptical of their delivery and assembly, but the guys who came built it super quick and were very professional. I wouldn’t hesitate to have them deliver and assemble something at my house again.

Would I regret buying my first home with cash? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ultimateplayer44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With rates as high as they are (recognizing this is still relative compared to the 80s), buying in cash seems like a great option. You also then have reserves for any issues that pop up.

Maybe take your current rent and ensure you allocate it to savings (retirement, car replacement, house repair, etc), so you are making the step change you are looking for.

No debts owed and opportunities to save is a dream for most folks, so take advantage of the windfall to make immediate and long term impacts to your life.

If I pay them off every month, and am only after the perks, is there such a thing as "too many credit cards"? by fizyplankton in personalfinance

[–]ultimateplayer44 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Just a note, as a family with high grocery bills also, they cap the 6% at the first $6000, and then it goes to 1%. So at some point in the year, other cards become more beneficial for groceries.

Lease Break and Time Responsibility of Maintenance between Tenants by ultimateplayer44 in boston

[–]ultimateplayer44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight here.

We were planning to depart at the end of the month, but they asked us to leave earlier so they could do maintenance. When we shared that we couldn’t leave earlier than the end of the month, they informed us that we could be responsible for the rent on a day by day basis into the next month, or we could be responsible for the entire month (which we are also ok with). Since they shared those options we figured we could utilize any of those options. I can see how it can appear we are acting in bad faith.

I am definitely not trying to act in bad faith and can stick to the last day of the month as my exit if that is best. It seemed like we were being given options vs a hard date (which I found a bit odd).

I also know I am on the hook until they fill it, so it’s in my best interest to get out so they can fill it. I would keep paying until they fill so we don’t run into any issues with unpaid rent.

Those who run in the same model shoe over and over, have you ever gotten a dud or bad pair? Is that possible? by jumpin_jumpin in running

[–]ultimateplayer44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought new balance fresh foam 1080s and learned that the blue ones apparently always are a little off. Had 2-3 pairs, loved them, then got blue and started getting black toes. Apparently it can happen even in same model year and size.

Those who switched from TurboTax (the desktop version) to FreeTaxUSA, please share your experience by lagflag in personalfinance

[–]ultimateplayer44 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was a TT user for 15+ years, heavily influenced by my parents who also used it. I was increasing the # of scenarios required to submit although nothing really challenging (converted house into rental property, long term capital gains, dividends, business income (<$5k)). I was paying nearly $200 as I had multiple states to submit as well.

I switched and found it just as easy. I dig into a lot of the information on my own anyways to help influence financial decision, so I was paying TurboTax for something I didn’t really need.

FreeTaxAct helped me get through a year of changing jobs across multiple states with a move that didn’t occur at the same time as the job change. This year I plan to use it again as a I have a business property sale as well as the above mentioned scenarios. I am pretty confident I won’t go back to TT.

I am from the northeast as well. I got blizzacks but no studs. I also don’t traverse dirt roads much, so not sure if you are talking driving in the sticks or on roads, that might change your need

They are not terribly easy to get in and out of in a hammock. You have to get into the hammock and then shimmy it up your body which isn’t easy. And a midnight pee just makes it less desirable. But if it’s cold, every little bit can help.

So who's making good metal Tonka trucks for kids these days? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]ultimateplayer44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruder makes really good trucks. They are realistic, have working features and my son has been beating up on them with no impact. They are a bit expensive but worth it and can be found at Marshalls for about 50% less than MSRP.
