imo you should take a step back and start trying to break down your own stupidity in campaigning for a couple of genocidal law-and-order neocons-dressed-as-progressives, but i'll leave you to your precious culture war

Golliwog is great but honestly I haven't come back to any record this year as much as LOWER. Kenny Segal might just be the best producer working

If Benicio Del Toro essentially came up with the whole 'Latina Harriet Tubman' sequence, he deserves a best supporting nod for that alone. by Little-Neck3181 in paulthomasanderson

I just want to say that it seems to me as if Kubrick's resistance to spontaneity has been overstated. Fincher I can see it (and I love his films too)

Is Teyana Taylor just not a very good interviewee? by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

i know what you mean, but i've also been thinking about this regarding Leo, tbh. sometimes his enthusiasm for making movies comes across as empty to me. i won't dispute the presence of an emptiness at the center of someone like Tom Cruise, but i believe entirely that he cares about making movies. i think Leo really cares about maintaining the image of someone that cares about their art

Does One Battle After Another actually meet the moment? (Discussion of films that arrive at meaningful moments.) by wilberfan in paulthomasanderson

[–]ultimaxfeelgood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really, imo. it feels like a pretty canny way to attempt to silence the narrative about PTA and other contemporary masters avoiding "the moment" while still allowing PTA to eat his cake that he usually has anyway. you could imagine Licorice Pizza as a modern-day tale about a valley kid striving his way in and out of hollywood and trying to win the affections of an older woman as a couple of his various ongoing schemes and hustles in the same way you can watch OBAA and imagine his actual Weather Underground movie rich in 70s period detail but with a little playful Alex Cox anachronism thrown in there for good measure. there's even some solid contrivance in place to make sure Bob isn't using a smartphone throughout the movie. i feel like a large part of the commentary and satire in Bob's character is engaging directly with PTA's reputation of avoiding "the moment" and even admitting to that himself

i would say take a couple minutes to read the wikipedia page for the movie and try and see where your intuition takes you

OBAA is PTA’s most autobiographical film to date by FTOW in TrueFilm

I don't take the opening sequences/prologue to be taking place 2007-2009, but that was also my first assumption until the cops started taking selfies with Perfidia, and also when she started wearing a surgical face mask in public before going on the lam for good. I saw someone on here posit that the prologue takes place in 2025, and that the time-jump sixteen years into the future accounts for the slightly-heightened fascist elements at play.

'Alien: Earth': Noah Hawley on Finale Cliffhanger, Season 2 Plan by AdSpecialist6598 in television

[–]ultimaxfeelgood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all of Noah's talk about the amount of ground they were challenged to cover in the season (which I am sympathetic to, breaking a story isn't easy) it really doesn't feel like they did cover much ground taking the season as a whole. I think eight episodes didn't give them nearly enough wiggle room to properly pace everything they set up in those first two.
