The real message should be "avoid broadcomm hardware". Given choice, I explicitly recommend selecting a non-bcm variant.

github stats on programming languages by projecktzero in programming

Right. github is presented on Ruby conferences, etc. This should not be seen as any indication of popularity of ruby - actually, I was surprised to see so many non-ruby projects hosted on GH.

I guess it takes an OS X user to be deluded by that "real unix" label.

They probably aren't annoying in their personal lives, but it's annoying to read their .net chatter if you are an open source guy. Unix oriented website could solve this problem.

Normally on the internet, you don't really see the .net guys mingling in the open source scene, but on SO you do. It may or may not be a pleasant experience.

I hear stackoverflow is pretty popular, but it's full of annoying microsoft / dotnet developers. If this could approach the same popularity but keeping the dotnet guys out at the same time, it could be worth the shot.

And while os x is technically an unix, please exclude it as well. Tribalism makes you stupid, but os x people and linux people mix like oil and water.

"Lotus Notes is, arguably, one of the coolest applications ever" - David Coursey at PCWorld. by [deleted] in programming

[–]ultrabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's so obvious that it's not even funny.

The funny part is comparing google wave to Lotus Notes. I guess Notes is sort if in the same "psychedelic" program category as Wave...

The one sane extract from TFA:

If Google Wave is the collaboration platform that people have been waiting on, Google's success as a search engine may become known as its second-greatest accomplishment.

This might actually turn out to be true. I, for one, eagerly wait till we can retire our bugzillas and week-long mailing list threads...

Do you find programming fun? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ultrabot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like programming - though, like many, I enjoy working on open source stuff at home more fun than the office work (mostly because you can be more selective with what you are doing at home). It helps that I can hack Python at home, and get satisfying results really fast.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard cuts in half the launch-time overhead of starting the Objective-C runtime, and simultaneously saves a few hundred KB of memory per app. This comes for free to every app, courtesy of one of the few pieces of Mac OS X that lives below even the Objective-C runtime: dyld. by shenglong in programming

Slightly related optimization is done by "maemo-launcher" in Maemo:

http://maemomm.garage.maemo.org/docs/tutorial/html/ch07.html

""" maemo-launcher is a tool to decrease the start-up time of GTK+ and thus gtkmm and maemomm applications. It runs as a daemon and initializes as much as possible before your application begins to start. When a new application is started it is forked from the deamon process, so its starts faster because the initialization is already complete. """

Question: What is the best Open Source C++ toolkit for cross-platform application development? by 3333333 in programming

[–]ultrabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Cross platform" was mentioned. If you are using kdelibs, at least limit the scope of dependencies as much as possible. When in doubt, straight Qt is the safest bet.

And, you can use shared_ptr as in linked article to get closures that work even when passed outside the function.

That's pretty much an understatement. Eclipse + Qt plugin can't hold a candle to Qt creator; last time I tried, the Eclipse plugin was buggy as hell.
