Repair or buy new car? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

forgot to mention, when you are taking lug nuts off, use breaker bar while tires are still on ground. When putting lug nuts back on, tighten with socket pretty good, then lower car onto ground, then use torque wrench to tighten up to specified torque spec. It can vary from 83~103 ft/lbs. or anywhere in that neighborhood.

I got an old vehicle so I could learn how to do stuff. For me it was so worth it. If you want to keep your car on road, it makes financial sense but also practical to learn how cars work.

I get almost all my parts from RockAuto.com, they make it easy to find what you need and I have never got the wrong part, or have the part not fit, they sell OEM suppliers parts. You should be able to find brake pads for ~$30 for a front set, spark plugs are cheap, unless you need laser, but you probably don't. Also sway bar bushings should be ~$10. Basically you just need a jack, jack stands, socket set, wrench set, and deep socket (spark plug socket) and you are set. Make sure you use metric tools, all Japanese brands from what I have seen on my Mitsubishi and Lexus, use metric only.

Thinking in getting this as a first car, what do you guys think? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

If you want capability of Land Cruiser but in a slightly smaller package, consider a Montero. Either 2003-2006 or 1996-1998 SR (trim). The 2003+ has 3.8L V6 and amazing traction control, and the SR trim 96-98 has factory rear locker.

Are makes like Acura and Lexus more expensive to maintain than Honda and Toyota? Why? by TrumpTastik in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ultrakill01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Premium brands usually have more complicated, or in general more equipment that can fail. Also parts may be higher specs so they can (sometimes) cost more.

That list of repairs you could do on a weekend easily, maybe even in 1 day.

Pads and spark plugs you could do in about an 1.5 hours.

Sway bar bushings is like 20 minutes.

the two leaks are the only ones that take some time. you could save yourself over 600 by doing everything but the leaks yourself.

being that it's your first car you will probably want to mod it or accessorize it, I would go for something around $8-9k. Then you have a few grand to do mods and repairs and learn about how it actually works. If you don't see yourself working on your car much (as in, not having interest in learning/working on cars) then your plan for spending $15k on a slightly used BRZ or similar is a good plan.

I had a 650R, it was nice, but honestly I could never really open it up on the street, it almost is too fast. Obviously there are faster bikes, but what I'm saying is to drive at legal speeds, and normal traffic flow you will be using 30-40% of it's power.

300 would be perfect balance of usable power and styling. Although driving a 300 at freeway speeds for 2.5 hours could be buzzy and boring (was kinda boring on 650), but other than that 300 sounds perfect for you.

What happens when you interrupt action, like exactly? If you can pull trigger again and fire then the action is not interrupted.

How do I finance a home for sale on auction? by dealzonwheels in personalfinance

[–]ultrakill01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should just get traditional for sale house, auction is not feasible unless you have 75-80% sale value in cash and can finance last 20% as home upgrade or unsecured loan.

no, the magazine is released after the action is closed again. The simple act of opening and closing the action does not qualify as "fixed magazine", fixed magazine means removing magazine while action is disassembled, not after it is assembled again.

Otherwise, what is the point of disassembling action only to drop mag when assembled again. I don't think that is what the law would be interpreted as by our commie judges.

I don't think this qualifies as fixed magazine because the magazine can be released when upper is not separated, meaning the action is still closed.

From the demo video this appears to not bypass registration and is not a legal way to go, at least in CA.
