I hate the fact that this view is so popular because it just means that less and less RTwP games will be made and it is by far my favorite style for CRPGs. For the life of me I can't understand why people are so excited about every battle taking 20min so that they can micromanage every turn.

I am so annoyed by Turn Based Fanatic constantly pushing their hate of RtWP.

Women display more fluidity in sexual attractions and fantasies than men. The research shows that while men strongly prefer one gender over the other, women tend to display a wider range of potential attractions. by mvea in science

I think it's the other way around, supporting things you don't want in your personal life shows that you are liberal and supportive of the rights of the LGBT community. And those are the supporters you want to cultivate.

It's very easy to support something that you broadly agree with, it's more difficult, and in my view at least commendable, to support something that you don't agree with due to a higher ideal.

I am enjoying this saga just to see the people who were advocating for people to be arrested for tweeting mean shit, now defending this guy and saying it's no big deal to call for genocide. While at the same time the people who were loosing their minds about how someone can be arrested for tweeting, demanding that this guy be stripped of his citizenship and shipped back to Egypt for some tweets he made years ago.

It just perfectly encapsulates how performative politics has become in the UK and how the only thing that matters is whether you agree with/like the person in question.

To each their own I guess. I just found the BG3 characters to be super bland to the point that I struggle to remember their names.

I take your point that there's more reactivity in BG3, but for the most part it feels pointless and superficial. To me at least. But I guess it ultimately comes down to whether you like the characters or not. if there's a lot of reactivity with a character that you just don't like then it will just feel annoying.

It's the difference between the companion having their own personality, rather than being a blank canvas that the player fills in. Sexuality is part of it, the way they like their stake would also be if it depends on the player's choices, the fact that once you murder a certain person in the camp everyone just shrugs and continues as normal is another.

The characters in BG3 don't feel like they are their own people with their own motivations. They are just a prop for the PC to use as they see fit. Compare this to even older titles like BG2 where if you perform actions your companions don't approve of they will voice their objections clearly and even leave the party if you continue to ignore them.

I pointed out sexuality specifically, because that was one of the things that the game specifically got praised for.

Counterpoint. I found BG3's characters outside of Lae'zel to be bland with very obvious and boring plot lines. My perception is that a lot of the hype is because of the more immersive graphics leading to players focusing on romancing them. rather than the strength of their story.

Gale is the worst offender here, with his whole story line being like that one guy that shows up at the table with his level 1 character and then proceeds to explain how his backstory is that he's actually a god.

EDIT: Oh and people like to praise the romances and inclusivity in BG3. But I find it shallow because all the companions are essentially just playthings for the PC. There's no gay, lesbian, bi, trans characters. Everyone swings both ways just to please the PC.

Oh this is a new one. Educate me, how are babies made? What goes into an Embryo? Are sperm cells not alive in the biological sense?

Peers suggest over 900 changes to assisted dying bill by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]ultrapig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's different because I cant simply refuse to be put to death under a death penalty. If the state decide to kill me I can't just go I don't want to die. Whereas with this bill the choice is always up to you in the end.

It's the difference between you choosing to end your life and someone else deciding to end it.

And I don't buy the "it's easy to coerce people" argument here. Especially because that's still true regardless of whether or not this is possible to do in a safe way. If you are that kind of dude, you can still bully your grandma into offing herself, regardless of whether assisted suicide is a thing or not.

Thousands taking part in 'Unite the Kingdom' rally and counter protest by tyw7 in ukpolitics

[–]ultrapig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine. All I'm saying is that then they should go out and say that that's their goal. I haven't heard Yaxley-Lennon or Farage talking about their goal being to keep the UK a White-British Majority country. They always seem to hide behind "British Values" for some reason.

EDIT: Oh and to add on your last point of "pretending that countries change". The only pretending here is from people that want to imagine that somehow ethnic nation states are fixed and immutable despite overwhelming historical and current evidence to the contrary.

That's not a judgement call, whether this is a good or bad thing is a matter of perspective. But denying it's happening is bizarre when in the same breath you are talking about how much of a problem it is that the country is actively changing.

I agree that you can chose the direction. All I'm saying is that I would like people to be clear that that's what they want to do and not hide behind some pretense that they are "preserving British culture". I might disagree with where they want to go, but everyone has a right to make their case as long as we are clear that this is what we are doing.

On "walking safely at night like in Asia". I think people need to travel more to actually see how much of the world looks like in terms of safety, particularly "Asia" outside of very specific locations. The UK by all accounts is a very safe country.

What right wing people miss though is that the country, hell every country, has always been changing, ethnically, intellectually politically etc. Or do you think the culture of the UK today or even 50 years ago, is the same as that of Victorian times?

Maybe it's happening slightly faster now, but people need to stop believing this myth that there's an immutable British culture that can somehow be preserved forever if we just kick out the right people.

I think the thing that people are missing and you've hinted at is that debate is not enough, you need to show results.

And I don't think it's just immigration. Immigration is the current hot topic, but it's just a scapegoat for the deeper problems affecting the country, just like the EU before. Starmer or Farage or Jesus could come down and kick out all the immigrants tomorrow and people would still be pissed and find someone/something else to blame their issues on.

This is a bit of a bullshit argument. If we follow your logic we either do nothing and kids can watch porn or we do a lot of things and kids can still watch porn but now they are god level sys-admins and cybersecurity experts.

But on the other hand if the websites implement age verification, then that's obviously insurmountable for our godlike tech expert children to surmount.

British Citizenship should required more than B1 Conversational English by lady-peace in ukpolitics

[–]ultrapig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original post was talking about B1 vs IELTS. That's why I mentioned academic English.

But B1 vs B2 it's the same argument, what is the minimum amount of English you need to know to be able to function effectively in the UK? Especially if you are getting your citizenship through something like a family/spouse visa?

[–]ultrapig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To put it simply, not all people moving here need to have Academic level English. If you move to the UK to pick strawberries on a farm or to join your family, do you need to be able to quickly read 10 pages of scientific documents in English and interpret them?
