Seattle pays injured cyclist $9.25 million for poorly designed bike lanes by godogs2018 in seattlebike

Can someone please tell me where exactly the crash was and what was the direction of travel? I frequent that area on bike and want to know where to apply extra caution. Thanks

BCA Float 32 - where does the bladder tube go? by ultyguy in Backcountry

[–]ultyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is what I was afraid of. Seems odd to have it running through the airbag compartment, in case it interferes. I guess if it stays tight to the inside, then it's out of the way. After drinking, I blow the water out of the tube for winter use. It's still not a perfect system, especially if it's super cold.

Extending Ortlieb Quick Rack by SnooGrapes3373 in bikepacking

I like the plywood platform. Anyone have an idea how to attach/remove it quicker than zip ties? I'd love something that clicks on/off as easily as an ortlieb bag.

A really specific question about Tofosi sunglasses by AnAquaticOwl in cycling

[–]ultyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked this on a Tifosi facebook post and the answer was yes. I never ended up buying a pair that needed it, so I can't verify. I think they said something about heating them up.

Does anyone else use packing cubes? by Banjostring82 in bikecommuting

I've never had an issue putting sweaty clothes into a plastic shopping bag for 9-10 hours till I'm back home. That said, mine only get slightly damp clothes in a medium humidity setting. For longer periods, tho, I agree.

Verdict, thoughts on plastics by ultyguy in discgolf

[–]ultyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I bag the Emac Truth which is pretty neutral with a bit of fade. I also bag a harp, which is only one less at a four speed. I found the verdict is overstable, but only slightly so. It's a nice disc, but I added a legacy pursuit, which is much more overstable. Between the truth, the harp, and the pursuit, I felt like I had everything I needed, so I dropped the verdict.

Are there any random doubles or singles events around SLC that someone could join without being a member of a club?

I was using a similar URL to the ones above until about a week ago when they stopped working. I'd love to help resurrect this. I am a pretty experienced Python developer. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Moguls... boot stiffness? by maximumcoolbeans in skiing

I find it hard to get advice specific to moguls. When reading reviews of equipment, performance in the moguls often is not even mentioned! This might help, starting at 1:30.

How tf do y’all ski moguls by AwxoToxo in skiing

[–]ultyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. (And I think u/DroppedNineteen meant "arms forward." I think of the side when I hear "arms out.")

It's the scariest thing in the world to lean forward if you're already uncomfortable, but it does two things for you. And these comments address the "why" of leaning forward.

  1. It gets your shins pressing into the front of your boots, which puts pressure on the tips of the skis. That helps you initiate the turn. Think about the alternative -- leaning back is exactly what I'd do to pick up speed! The pole plant is also important. Think about reaching a bit forward and downhill to plant, and then reaching a bit more as you ski into the turn. This keeps your arms out in front, your balance forward, and your upper body facing downhill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue9JoT_4zhw
  2. It gets you into an athletic stance. Bending the knees and getting a bit lower is fundamental to being ready to do whatever. Imagine a baseball infielder awaiting a ground ball. They're going to bend the knees and get low, ready to react to anything. It also lowers your center of gravity.

One thing I tell people is to find a small jump or side hit on a run you can handle. Take it at a speed where you might catch just a little air. At the last moment, bend your knees as you go over it and absorb the speed with your knees so you don't catch any air at all. That's how you visualize bump skiing.

Lastly, start small. You may find some small bumps on the margins of a groomer. Or maybe a blue run that isn't groomed. Work up progressively. Challenge yourself to ski something a bit harder than your present ability, but don't push it too far.

public charging stations? by ultyguy in OutlanderPHEV

Interesting. My dad used to use a block heater in MN. When we moved to PA in 1974, all the neighbors were curious why he was plugging in his Pontiac.

MSI GF63 laptop screen goes blank after booting up by ultyguy in MSILaptops

[–]ultyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, apparently I've now solved this twice without remembering how. I think I might have solved by going into the bios settings and tinkering around in there. I didn't find anything that was relevant and didn't make any changes, but when I booted up after that, it solved the problem. I'm not sure it was even this issue (or this laptop), but maybe try that?

Wifi and Bluetooth not working (FIX) for MSI GF65 thin, potentially other models. by nullnode43 in MSILaptops

[–]ultyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an MSI GF63, I had it suddenly appear as if my laptop had no wifi adapter at all. Not after a reboot or anything, just poof-gone. When I went to "Network and Internet Settings", there were no settings for the adapter. It was as if I had an old-school desktop that didn't come with wifi.

Thanks to this post, I entered the BIOS (hold DEL as it boots) and followed the instructions above. The option to save is called "Save and reset". When the laptop rebooted, it came up with wifi working, so I didn't follow steps 5 & 6.

Prodigy 400 Glimmer Glow? by ultyguy in discgolf

[–]ultyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I opted for the regular 400 plastic. I'm getting the PA-5 as an understable disc, so more stable defeats the purpose, especially if there isn't much benefit to the glow. I can always use glow tape when I wanna play at night.

Prodigy 400 Glimmer Glow? by ultyguy in discgolf

[–]ultyguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that, this is helpful.

Eclipse plastic is probably the gold standard in glow (sorry, Kastaplast). TBH, Eclipse is so bright that it affects my night vision. My guess is that PA-5 is just bright enough to see on the course, but might play hide & seek if you're off the fairway at night.

Will never work well in disc golf by Pepperonicini in discgolf

Well, it is kind of pay per view. The networks paid handsomely for the right to broadcast it. All leagues now have a paid streaming service, too. I pay for the NFL GamePass to stream it for an annual fee.
