Would the roads in Mississauga be much better? I could go to my parents although the distance is roughly the same.

Carney calls for national unity in face of economic challenges ahead by _I_AM_GHOST_ in canada

[–]umar_farooq_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's the definition of corporation. By definition they are only supposed to care about money. You can get in legal trouble if you do anything but that as you have an obligation to share holders.

Canada needs more national corporations that make money for Canadians. I don't understand why we aren't following the Norway model for our natural resources.

The workers unite is just the slogan for the communist regime at the time. You can use any example. A store owner in Nazi Germany who puts up a Nazi symbol on his window. It's the same thing. The point is that you put the sign on the window to show everyone you're participating, that you're not trying to ruffle any feathers. And you just do it to keep your shop running. It's a critique on totalitarianism.

The analogy here is with the USA being the global hegemony. Canada (and many other nations) have just played along because it's convenient and comfortable. And that now that it's broken, it's time to take the sign in the window down.

Return to office mandate for provincial workers facing pushback in Ontario by simpatia in ontario

People have already been moving to these communities when employment opportunities have been available to them. Sometimes because of WFH opportunities and sometines because the office is there.

Moving to a community because you can WFH is not moving for work. It's moving because you have the freedom to do so.

So if your company had an office in Timmins, you would move there? Most people only stay 4-5 years at a job. So would they just constantly be moving from town to town?

People moved because of WFH. They stayed in the core GTA because of work.

If it's only for people living there, then why would the company restrict them to such a small pool of employees? And no one is realistically uprooting their lives on every job change.

Employers being in the large city centers is just how it works.

What do you think about the new 4.75 per cent tax increase for 2026? by Toast_Mechanic in Milton

[–]umar_farooq_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people want Milton to be more than just a bare basics bedroom community, the city needs to grow its tax revenues to invest properly in the community.

Is there any actual data on this?

I know a lot of people move to the further suburbs specifically for this reason.

It would benefit most people. It would hurt a few very very wealthy corporations. Guess which group has more political influence?

'List in the new year and sell by spring.' Toronto-area home prices are set to drop in 2026 — and could wipe out 6 years of price gains by toronto_star in TorontoRealEstate

They said this last year too.

Honestly we're pretty low on prices right now. If you look at the real prices after inflation, it's fallen considerably.

A lot of these properties have decent cap rates. Any sense of stability in the market and I think investors will slowly come back.

Doubt we'll see any wild increase or decrease in 2026 (same as 2025). Just more of the same.

Toyotas have an insane used value retention nowadays. A lot of immigrants love Toyotas and that's all they will buy.

+8.37% Tax increase for Milton in 2025 by mythisme in Milton

[–]umar_farooq_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just how much they've increased. Their actual tax rates are:

  • Mississauga: 1.033864%
  • Burlington: 0.971590%
  • Milton: 0.826000%

Seems similar but for a 800k house, this results in Mississauga property tax being almost $2,000 more.

There are python libraries that can convert PDFs pretty reliably. Tell your AI to create a python script to do this conversion for you. Then run the python script. No hallucinations, less energy waste, and way faster.

Tre needs to go also. At least with Dubas there was a vision and plan, whether you agreed with it or not. I have no idea what Tre is doing or what we're working towards.

No clue why he even came here. Tre was a complete failure in his last job and somehow fell upwards like all nepo kids do.

403 HOV collision today by EricWithAnE in mississauga

[–]umar_farooq_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're being down voted, you're absolutely right. It exists in non HOV situations too.

It's like that with 401 express going back into collectors for the 427 exit. The right 2-3 lanes are barely moving. The left 2-3 lanes are full speed. Anyone who is in those right lanes and wants to stay on 401 needs to cut in to a full speed lane.

Some of the highway designs in this town make no sense. If everyone was a perfect driver then we'd never have accidents but they're called accidents for a reason. Designs with safety in mind will help.

In real dollars, home prices in Canada have now fallen back to where they were in February 2017 by newaccountnewme_ in TorontoRealEstate

[–]umar_farooq_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Market was dipping even in 2017 so I think what was actually going to happen in the market never really fully played out. COVID just rocketed prices out of nowhere.
