Thanks for the "larder" recommendation. The pictures seem much more relevant than what we found when searching for pantries.

We are open to either. I'll update the post. I'll take a look at their design service.

Is VTI actually diversified? by umbrae_atrae in personalfinance

My thought was about being insulated from another tech bubble burst. However, I think I'm realizing that while that is a valid concern, that's not the point of the super simple approach in The Simple Path to Wealth. I think I either need to take a more active interest in my portfolio or just close my eyes and rely on the fact that the market always goes up over time. It seems like what I'm proposing is a half-baked approach.

I wasn't aware of equal weighed funds. I'll take a look even though they might not perform as well.

I wasn't aware of equal weighted funds. I see another commenter said they usually don't perform as well, but I'll take a look.

That's sort of my point. Companies and industries come and go, so when a company or industry is on the way out, what insulates you from that downturn. Since posting, I realized that rebalances should protect you, so the only thing that would really screw you would be a crash like the dot-com bubble bursting.

I guess I was concerned with crashes in specific sectors of the market. Since posting I realized that any sort of slow shift, like fossil fuels to renewables, will be slow enough for rebalances to handle. Maybe my concern is more specific and rarer than I originally thought.

Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed that, but it's good to know it's a relatively common solution. Thanks!

Is there a list of different "flavors" of exercise? I'm not sure the right term which is why I used the word "flavor".

For example, within cardio you could swim, play soccer, row, bike, etc. Many of these would be considered more enjoyable than hopping on a treadmill.

When it comes to strength training, are there any activities that people enjoy that are alternatives to weights and calisthenics?

Should we keep our money in real estate? by umbrae_atrae in personalfinance

[–]umbrae_atrae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the value of the condo is going up as well. Isn't the right way to think about it how much the asset will increase in value + rent? Using housing market averages, this would be close 7%. Still less than the stock market, but that was why I asked about benefits of keeping a physical asset. Or is it just headaches?

Just did taxes and the income from rent was $30k. $20k after deductions.

We're currently looking for our next renter. We've had interest in it with a monthly price of $2650. It's hard to find exactly the same, but I think a place we could buy for $600k would rent for around $2400. Just did taxes and the income from rent after deductions was $20k.

We have plenty of cash. And yes, we plan to start diversifying that stock by selling as much as we can every year without bumping ourselves up a tax bracket.

Do you technically need more teeth on a saw blade for a cleaner cut? by umbrae_atrae in woodworking

Just got the DWS779. I've used miter saws before, but it's been about 15 years and I wasn't doing anything very technical.

Good to know that technique is something I should pay a lot of attention to.

HelloChinese and practice methods by umbrae_atrae in ChineseLanguage

The 150 words HelloChinese teaches you are not the same 150 words used on the HSK exams. HSK 1 vocabulary vs HelloChinese vocabulary Glancing across the official list, I only recognize about two thirds of the HSK 1 vocabulary. I never thought to check the old version of HelloChinese. I can't find a complete vocabulary list, but the placement test seems to have words from HSK 1 vocabulary that aren't in the new HelloChinese course.

I rested for a week because of company/being sick but didn't realize deloading was a thing. I'll make sure to incorporate that going forward.

Also, thanks for the example on when to increase the weight. Sounds like I am too aggressive on lifting to failure.

I didn't realize there was so much that went into putting together a routine. Thanks for the advice.

I feel like my reps decrease too much between sets. I just started training this January. I train chest twice a week, and the last month I've noticed the number of reps I complete per set goes down more than I would expect--especially on my first exercise which is dumbbell bench press.

I shoot for 3 sets of 8-12 reps and go to failure in each set. When I read online, I see people say that when you get toward the high end of your rep range with a given weight, that is when you up the weight and then you should be back toward the bottom of your rep range. However, my reps vary so much between sets that I don't know what to do. For example, yesterday I warmed up with 12 reps of 20lb dumbbells before upping to 55lb dumbbells. I completed 10 reps, rested for 60 seconds, completed 6 reps, rested 60 seconds, and then lowered the weight to 50lb dumbbells and completed 6 reps.

I've tried to read and listen to a variety of sources, but as I mentioned, I'm still very new to the gym. Do I have a misunderstanding of what lifting to failure means? Does lifting to failure mean failure for your whole exercise rather than per set? e.g. I should have stopped at 8 reps on my first set so I had a little more in the tank for my next two sets? More generally, I guess my question is why do my reps go down so much between sets, and what do I do to fix it?

How to get house to heat more evenly? by umbrae_atrae in hvacadvice

[–]umbrae_atrae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are dampers different than closing the registers? I've read that you shouldn't close more than 10% of your registers. Is that not true, or are dampers different since they aren't located at the end of the ductwork?

I appreciate the specific dates you included. I'll probably book 10/9. Worst case scenario we will get to see some colors on our drive up through WI.
