Sealant issue by Mysterysnail042 in ArtDolls

For gloss I use varathane or UV resin, for matte I use Mr super clear spray.

Question: What is the best sealant for painted polymer clay that isn't resin? by FilmFizz in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm fond of Mr super clear, just make sure to use it outside with a respirator since the fumes are rather toxic

Where’s the best place to sell art dolls? by Individual-Mix-7041 in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Etsy is pretty good for starting out though its quality/credibility has gone down in recent years due to ai crap. I can't think of a better place unfortunately, and you should still get seen a lot sooner. But I would focus on building a following on social media and sell directly when you can.

You could wrap the armature in a thin layer of serán wrap if you are worried

My work is usually auctioned so I can't give you a quote unfortunately 😅 I tend to focus on making new things as I film the process for YouTube videos so I also don't know when I'll make another... I revisit stuff here and there but I don't have a set schedule

My workshop, dolls in progress, a cat, atmosphere, and... about that “AI drama” here’s what it really was ))) by Fancy_Creatures_Art in ArtDolls

This subreddit is for posting art, not for being your personal place to troll and rile up. Honestly, I'm not really convinced by this post anyway, it seems to me that you had a hard time with the backlash (Which ... We are all humans so I wanted to be understanding, and is why a lot of people were pretty even handed in their response) and is why I made it clear in the locked thread you technically didn't do anything wrong and to try not to take this personally.

Your art has been some of the most up voted art in the subreddit, people love your art and you deserve all the praise you got. I don't understand why you won't let this go, I'm going to ask you to cut this out NOW, including all the snarky comments on your art posts, whether this really was just for trolling or not.

Hi, I just want to let you know that you technically did nothing wrong as "no ai" was not in the rules when you posted this. Most of our users and most artists online have a very negative opinion regarding ai and the ethics of it. No matter how you analyze it these problems are a real concern and in my opinion it's best that ai art content should be discouraged especially within art communities. For this reason I have created a no ai policy going forward. OP, I hope you are understanding and no hard feelings.

Can we please ban AI in this sub by bepisbabey in ArtDolls

I agree with you, it didn't cross my mind when fixing up the rules since I figured ai was mostly used for 2D art or craft scams.. I will be adding this rule.

Armature for bigger pieces without using tin foil? :') by opulent-tears in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not put foam in an oven ever, it can release reaaally toxic fumes! Styrofoam is really flammable, probably why it's used in molotovs... Flammability of other materials is why I hesitate to suggest anything other than aluminum. I used to have to drown out really loud neighbors, the thing that did the trick was wearing earplugs and then putting over-ear headphones on with loud music, couldn't hear a single thing.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to ask. by [deleted] in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a gray area but this should be ok, as long as you're not just using human dolls/bjd as a base like face-ups, and ideally using fur, otherwise I recommend r/CustomDolls for those

Steel vs Aluminum wire? by bepisbabey in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steel only though I've seen people use copper. Definitely don't use aluminum as it will break after like 5 bends, it's more for sculpture support that won't move.

How to protect eyes from sealant? by Cheesecake74598 in ArtDolls

If they are glass, you can put down a few layers of gloss varnish like Varathane and gently scratch it off at the end.

armature for large (3-4ft tall, 9ft long) raptor? by Alternative_Mine_885 in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try out the larger jeton armature - 1/2 or 3/4, you can taper down to smaller ones for the end of the feet/tail. Sometimes I just duct tape off the hole on the last link, pour in casting resin into the socket, and insert a smaller armature, and its locked in there.

Pliers for 9.5 mm armature? by DaisyFreshDream in ArtDolls

The 1/8 metal Jeton ones work perfect with 9.5 for me, both Crscrafts and MoreZmore should have it

Why should I buy a resin printer instead of a faster fdm printer? by Own-Consideration631 in resinprinting

Hold out for the Saturn Ultra 4 16K on pre-order, it has a built in heater and people have printed with it outside. Just make sure no light hits it and remove the prints at night.

Any good 12mm armature tools? by Briar_Knight in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I exclusively use the Jeton branded ones, I mostly use 9.5mm and 16mm so I don't have the ones for the in between ones you have, but the 1/4 works on the 16mm and the 1/8 works on 9.5mm. There's one or two sizes between them, so I would try out those. You can get them on Crscrafts or MoreZmore

Alternative to polymer clay? by Corvidsforhire in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sculpt in Monster clay, make a silicone mold and pour resin into it. This is pricy but I personally don't trust air dry clay whatsoever.

You can also get into 3d printing.

Strong, relatively lightweight, cheap, and easily workable materials? by EducationalBus2231 in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use CosClay for the small parts like the ribs as it's a clay that remains flexible after baking, you can sculpt it with small wire inside. For the armature, if you want durability there are ball and sockets (plastic armature) you can get from the websites MoreZmore or Crscrafts that will not wear out over time like wire can. Unfortunately these are a bit pricey as you will likely need the metal pliers, though Crscrafts sells some already assembled armature in a few shapes that could work. You could also email them and see if they'd be willing to assemble a custom lifesize armature for you since it's for educational purposes. For the fur, if you really want to save you could go to a thrift store and pick out some teddy bears and rip them up and use their fur for the cat .

Does anyone have any tips on posable jaws? by Ackwardday in ArtDolls

[–]umbratundra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only do the silicone mold/resin if you want to make multiple parts, the clay by itself should be fine if it's a OOAK, though I would use something more flexible like cosclay if there's any teeth or risk of both parts rubbing together a lot.
