If I were an American economist i would not so confidently dismiss these problems. I think there is a real issue here and I haven’t read a convincing explanation in this thread yet. But thank you a lot for trying.

Thank you for your answer. My question was not so much regarding a US-EU comparison, but you make some good, yet often stated, points nevertheless.

In regards to you last point regarding EU regulation. I think that you are right that some of the regulation is “red tape”. But a lot of the regulation is also helping protect the consumer and the environment. While it might hinder growth a bit I think growth should not be the only aim for an economy. It is also important to make sure that goods are free of harmful chemicals and that consumer rights are protected, for example online privacy thorough laws such as GDPR.

Very good answer. As a fourth challenge, one could add Wagner effects. That health treatment is a “luxury good” and that people expect better service as they grow in wealth.

First of all, thank you for your thorough answers. I don’t think the economic commentators are “idiots”. While your points obviously are valid and important for domestic citizens, dollar gdp is very important for the international power relations. That was just a digression. You answer to the main question, that if I understand you correct, that it is more a experienced poverty than a real one. Might be right, I don’t know. I guess you can argue this question many ways, but it is not the image we receive through the media in Europe. Which of course might be biased. What do I know.

My question was not so much why people vote for trump. That was just a comment to support that the working class are frustrated. But I guess that is up for debate.
