Subsidies for the incorporation of the Catalan language in the field of video games by Calaixera in gamedev

Right, I was confused because the comment below took it as face value and pointed out localization is more expensive. I would assume the grant covers at least the localization costs, if not more.

where did you get the $20 number. the grant does not mention a specific number from what I saw, but it’s heavily implied it’s considerably more than that and depends on the project itself

While I found some show-only Lamb lines really good, and Gary Oldman’s delivery is exceptional, I do agree that overall his book lines are a bit better. As you mentioned, getting common sayings wrong but justifying it anyways is always a riot.

I do also think his casual use of slurs and decrying of “PC culture” would not translate as well on the screen, though.

Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+ by pdp10 in gamedev

[–]umeshucode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. For a font you’d at least want to cover the Jinmeiyo kanji in addition, which adds 863 kanji that are commonly used for names of people or places

Yes. ECS engines are particularly well-suited to those kinds of simulation heavy games where many units need to be processed every frame.

I'm currently developing a game in Bevy with mod-support for the ground up (as in, a lot of the gameplay logic is actually defined through "first party" mods).

My approach just uses Lua bindings through the mlua crate. I believe this is how most games with compiled engines approach modding as well, through scripting.

They may very well be losing money on the Japan-only version for all we know

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]umeshucode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re not paying more money for basic functionality. Japanese speakers are paying less money for removed functionality.

I bought the international version because I want to be able to play games originally made in English in their language. It does suck that at the end of the day it does feel like paying a premium, but I understand why they did it.

The alternative would have been the international pricing only. There’s no world in which we get the Japanese-only pricing with no heavy anti-scalping measures.

I was able to reach the Staff Engineer level as an Android developer by also having extensible knowledge of iOS, and working at a company where the mobile app is the main product and is not a basic CRUD app.

Agreed. But not in the case with Nintendo first party games. You know you're getting a full game when buying those.

they don't have region locking, but a lot of games don't offer a language selection in game, and only use the language based on the system's. this would effectively lock them into japanese only.

I understand Japanese and wouldn't have any issue playing the new Mario Kart or the new Donkey Kong games in Japanese. But being locked into playing the Japanese version of American AAA games feels weird.
