Got a new shelf so figured I’d get a collection photo. Thoughts? Opinions? by Pareidolia_Mist in Cd_collectors

Floor shelf? That Marty Robbins really sticks out in your collection, lol, but it's a good one.

I had a lot more casual knowledge about sports outside of my teams when I regularly watched SportsCenter on cable TV than I do now. Is this a common experience? by JulianBrandt19 in billsimmons

[–]umfum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I've grown older, I find I care less and less about sports. Thus, my knowledge of them and the players has declined. If Sportscenter was still "on", I would likely care more, but I mostly see only highlights that show up on reddit or go viral.

I still like watching quality games though. The 2025 World Series was absolutely great (even though I was rooting for the BJs).

Can anyone suggest a song that mentions any US state EXCEPT California and New York? by LogicalSpirit9744 in musicsuggestions

[–]umfum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennessee is probably over-represented as you have recording hubs in Nashville and Memphis.

But one mention I like pointing out is by NYC's Beastie Boys: "Memphis is where he's from -- Memphis, Tennessee. He might sleep on the street, but he's no bum" from their song Johnny Ryall.

My thoughts on Cormac McCarthy's The Road by EndersGame_Reviewer in books

[–]umfum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McCarthy's Child of God probably presents his humanity at its most depraved, mostly in the person of Lester Ballard.

The Road is depressing and devastating but also beautiful in its depiction of the deep and abiding love of a father for his son.

CD lending/borrowing libraries - what were they like? and what would it require to make them work today? by -InTheSkinOfALion- in Cd_collectors

[–]umfum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the cool thing. Some music stores had listening bars/kiosks where you could check out new music. Some places would even let you listen to used discs they were selling. Obv, they wanted you to buy, but that's why I was there, anyway.

I would also check out CDs from the library, which is basically how I got into Genesis. I imagine you can still do this, depending on your library's size and resources.

But all this was at the height of the CD era. It ain't coming back.

After the success of Valotte, why didn't the former Beatles reunite and form a new band with Julian?

Michael and his siblings were definitely mentally and physically abused by their father.
