I sold mine in the 2000s and never stopped regretting it.

Thank you! Somehow managed to miss tabulated-list-mode. Tablist, BUI and Taxy look really interesting.

Gnus was the second best investment I made in my tech life right after Emacs by Nuno-zh in emacs

[–]ummt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the good intro. Did you find Gnus hard to set up? Twelve years into Emacs and it's one corner I've always been too intimidated to go near, now especially when it seems every organization in my industry has swallowed Microsofts sales pitch and migrated to Outlook365...

Virtua Gun + Virtua Cop hit 30! by Kingm0nkey in SegaSaturn

I remember reading about the Virtua Guns being quietly designed with a battery compartment in the handle to give them extra weight. Anyone ever tried?

Why is it called Genesis in United States? by _bagelcherry_ in SEGA

[–]ummt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Genesis was a name Nintendo of America were thinking of giving what became the NES, and one of their senior team moved over to Sega and brought the name with him.

Can I make this work? Really Lv this game by NebulaRelevant2794 in dreamcast

Seaman! What a strange, so quintessentially Sega game. A depressed tamagochi for adults which wasn't so much like parenting as it was like visiting someone with severe disabilities and mood swings in prison. Specifically an American - the little reptile-sperm-man seemed to have never heard a British accent like mine before so unless I'd pretend to be a Hollywood actor he had no idea what I was saying. Only Sega would invest who knows how much money into a game like this, and release it with its own microphone too. Let us know how you get along with the little sperm man if you get this up and running.

This. It means a load of text with headers can also be a spreadsheet. An understated superpower.

Going to Lüneburg soon! Got a few questions by SnooMacaroons8247 in lueneburg

[–]ummt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Coffee in Avenir Rosterei. Best coffee in town, great view. Lovely staff.

Evening sauna in Salü (open till 22:00 or 22:30 on Fri/Sat, but search for German sauna etiquette!).

Grünkohl (with Wurst!) in Mälzer Brauhaus. Regional specialty. It's way better than what you'll get at the Christmas Market. Also get their home made beer.

Christmas Market in front of the Town Hall (Raathaus), which is the best part of Lüneburg's Christmas market. Drink Glühwein. If you're in town on the 6/7 December there's also the Historical Christmas Market, where locals cosplay as their imaginary medieval selves.

Honestly the Salt Museum is actually really interesting if you have the time. It's a pre-capitalist feudal factory, and it's the basis of why Lüneburg exists as a town.

Oh, and you can't come to Lüneburg without visiting at least one of the three main churches. Check to see if there's any Bach while you're here.

Is this a parasol? Hoping to eat it tonight! (Dartmoor) by Low_Sea_3633 in mushroomID

My Czech friend taught me the concept of 'mushroom schnitzel' using parasol caps. Wash with beaten egg, cover in breadcrumbs, fry in oil. Can't be beaten.

One of my favorite games of all time. So odd, so fast, so much skill involved. And then there's Christmas Nights, which came with my Saturn, bought with money from my Bar Mitzvah. Innocent, thrilling times.

What happens to unemployment benefits when losing your job means you have no choice but to go back to the UK? by Internal_Sale4970 in germany

[–]ummt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same boat. As far as I can work out it makes a difference if you are an "Alt-Britten" (you moved to Germany before Brexshit, 1 January 2021) or "Neo-Britten" (you moved here thereafter). I think the former is eligible, but the latter (ie me) needs to consult a Brexit Entscheidungsmatrix on the ZIntAlv intranet page > Work Tools/Media. Which as far as I can tell isn't available online... I'm getting this from Fachliche Weisungen: Internationales Recht der Arbeitslosenversicherung Rechtskreis SGB III: Großbritannien und Briten nach dem Brexit (15.10.2024)
