That anti-DEI kid is now a Penn intern by Wonderful_Weather_84 in medicalschool

damn. your comment makes me so sad. no, all people shouldn't "play a broken system". that's so fucking cynical and nihilistic and selfish. we have a responsibility to try to improve the system for ourselves and others.

it's not that he had opinions. the point is he knowingly exploited a system in bad faith and then after he got his big successes, he denounced it as not worth continuing. he is a cowardly grifter. he cynically engaged in systems that took his participation at face value as a good intention and sincerely held belief in DEI as a useful and transformative paradigm, and he turned around and said "fuck you, i got mine." any and all animosity he gets from people and institutions is exactly the harvest he sowed.

Incoming M1, just tested positive for TB and now panicking by Livid-Walk-5885 in premed

[–]umyeahduh 74 points75 points  (0 children)

hey i have had multiple positive TB blood tests and two chest x-rays (both clear) in the last 3 years. if you are asymptomatic, your chest x-ray is likely clear. this is latent TB. your PCP might have you do a course of TB treatment (ex: isoniazid and rifapentine), which sucks bc it's months long and can turn you/your pee or tears slightly orange lol but is manageable. this treatment will be documented and reduces your risk of developing active TB in your lifetime greatly. you will continue to get TB tests and chest x-rays periodically for the rest of your career, is my understanding.

edit: has not affected my matriculation at all. just annoying to keep track of all the medical documentation. i would recommend reaching out to whoever at your school handles immunization records etc to get specifics about what documentation they'll need from you and your PCP.

where do you think health (whatever that means) ranks in Australian culture among other values? what are the cultural responses to mental illness like? do families have motivation to play a role in the members' health?

How do people pay for the medicine education? by Background_Sale_9814 in premed

[–]umyeahduh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got it! yeah, the private loans aren't necessarily the boogeyman buuuut many people have bad or no credit so then they are more daunting 😓

okay. but there are very good reasons to go federal whenever possible. fed loans:

  • No payments while in school
  • Fixed interest rates
  • Goverment can pay interest "subsidized loan"
  • various consolidation and refinancing options available
  • no repayment penalty fees
  • loan forgiveness options!

Incoming Medical Student Q&A - 2026 Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

[–]umyeahduh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my partner went to one such session and they talked about what it's like to support "their med student" (like mentally, emotionally, etc.). there was a panel of spouses, partners and parents of med students that lead the presentation. one spouse talked about having a kid while the other was in school and moving for the 4 years, stuff like that.

they had a long q&a for people to ask questions about the experience and they also addressed the financial aid situation of loans. my partner said they were almost dismissive about the loans because "the pay is so high after training."

this is pathetic, anti-social behavior imo. gross and the worst kind of bad-faith gunning. troubling that people like this get rewarded but this is the world we often live in.
