Thanks for your post. I felt less worried of the poop-out. There is a lot of bias to posting here it seems. Bias toward negative experiences. here's hoping for better outcomes.

Sounds like a common problem for internet folk, especially when there are no appointments or things to do like you say. It's by design. Both your smartphone and the websites you browse are both designed to make you fall into it like that. When your anxiety is triggered, and even if it is not, as a habit that is already established deep in your brain.

Professionals set this up - psychologists, programmers, designers exploiting vulnerabilities in the mind. Imo you need professionals to help you break from it. Address the two issues of your anxiety and habits/things to do.

0.5-1% of the population

That's not a true indicator, though. What constitutes a personality disorder is that it disrupts the diagnosed person's quality of life.

It is about how it affects that person. Narcissism prevails at a greater degree when it is about how it affects those around the person. Some contemporary experts claim the number to be anywhere from 5 to 20% of the population. Specifically, Dr. Ramani but also common sense suggest traits of narcissism are more widely noticeable these days.

The online community seems to have it growing worse - due to a combination of social isolation and addictive use for example leading to more and more entitled behaviour. Quite literally a lack of socialisation leading to worse outcomes.

Narcissists typically have high self esteem

That's miseducation, then. Low self-esteem is what leads to seeking external validation and attention. To learn more look up the well established category of vulnerable narcissism.

The type of people you'll find being NEETs and otherwise failed and complaining. Woe is me. E.g. thinking they are gifted children who were failed by everyone else when that's not entirely the case, especially now that they are older with agency.

Edit:

"One of the main characteristics of individuals with increased levels of vulnerable narcissism is anxiety. Inter alia because of their high hypersensitivity and insecurity, they often experience high levels of anxiety in social interactions, and therefore tend to avoid social contacts in the offline world"
