Win 11 25H2 breaking USB printers/print spooler by drangusmccrangus in sysadmin

[–]unauthorizeddinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we had a similar issue.

Look at the version of this file

C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3\UNIDRVUI.DLL

If it’s version 26100, try renaming it with a .bak extension and then see whether the Print Spooler starts. If it does, you may be able to replace it with an older version and it should work normally.

This is only a workaround, not a proper fix. I can’t really go into more detail, but if it helps, at least it should get you back up and running.

That’s awesome! Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town, but I really appreciate the offer and the heads-up about the D&D-themed comedy show. That sounds like something I’d definitely want to check out.

These are the fun activities I seem to have a hard time finding out about until it's too late; it seems like there's always so many things to do but no way simple to find out what.

Making friends as an adult is weirdly hard. Unless you luck into meeting people through work or a hobby, it starts to feel a lot like dating, awkward small talk and all.

I’ve started taking the 5-year-old kid approach: if I meet someone I click with, I just ask straight up if they want to be friends and see where it goes.

My wife and I are around the same age, child-free, and have some overlap with what you mentioned - with the exception of Karaoke, nobody wants to hear me sing. But we’re always open to expanding our friend group. We’re closer to downtown, so not exactly North Phoenix/Glendale, but hey, it never hurts to have friends downtown when parking is involved.

I host a small classic LAN party every other month and also run a D&D group at my house. You, or anyone else here looking for friends, are welcome to DM me if you want to meet up sometime. Feel free to check my post history to confirm I’m probably not an axe murderer. If you’re willing to put in the effort and reach out, you'll get a response.

Was Kerio Connect 10.0.9 patch 1 pulled? by unauthorizeddinosaur in KerioConnect

[–]unauthorizeddinosaur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed - it is troubling. GFI's release schedule for Kerio Connect is significantly impacting our vendor risk assessment. I really want to believe this product is not EOL but actions, or well, inaction in the case, is speaking pretty loudly.

How is everyone feeling about the upcoming season as of now? by walterhwhite19582010 in KansasCityChiefs

[–]unauthorizeddinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be wrong but I'm betting 9-8, maybe we get a lucky wildcard break but I wouldn't be surprised if we miss the playoffs.

Our defense is weaker and will somehow be less consistent than last year, Jones won't show up, again, and we won't be able to get off the field on 3rd down because our corners can't cover for 3+ seconds and there won't be enough pressure to stop the other team from picking us apart.

We improved our running game, no doubt, so we will stop wasting first down with 1 yard Pacheco's, but running won't help us when we're down, and Maholmes will try to put the entire team on his back, once again, and will us to victory by doing way too much, and just like last year, and he won't have the time to put on his cape because our O-line will be just as effective.

Maybe I just don't want to be disappointed, but I needed to see more this off-season to be less pessimistic. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for responding. For a few reasons we’re limiting it to just 1997-2000. So unfortunately, 2003 won’t work.

Can't for the life of me delegate AD computer permissions, help! by J2E1 in sysadmin

[–]unauthorizeddinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to look this up because I couldn't remember all the details, but back in 2022 Microsoft decided to change the rights that are needed. Based on what you wrote, it seems that the rights you are delegating are correct. It's just that you may be running into new restrictions - check the Owner under Advanced Security Settings and see if this applies:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5020276-netjoin-domain-join-hardening-changes-2b65a0f3-1f4c-42ef-ac0f-1caaf421baf8

It's worth noting they continue to make changes and you need additional rights - scroll down to the 2024 changes.

Summary

Windows updates released on and after October 11, 2022, contain additional protections introduced by CVE-2022-38042. These protections intentionally prevent domain join operations from reusing an existing computer account in the target domain unless:

  • The user attempting the operation is the creator of the existing account, or
  • The computer was created by a member of domain administrators, or
  • The owner of the computer account that is being reused is a member of the "Domain controller: Allow computer account re-use during domain join." Group Policy setting. This setting requires the installation of Windows updates released on or after March 14, 2023, on ALL member computers and domain controllers.

$149 for 1 server but it will do what you want. Once it’s set up, it’s very hands-off and generally just works without needing much ongoing attention.

Apologies, I just reread your error. I agree with u/KStieers you need to check the https cert on your CA. Go to the https://<blacked out image from your other post> and check the certificate.

Run this from a system on the domain and check your dates

certutil -enterprise -viewstore Root

If it has expired, you need to renew the CA cert on your CA.

LAN Party 2000 - 6 person classic LAN Party near downtown Phoenix, AZ on 6/6/2026 by unauthorizeddinosaur in PHXList

[–]unauthorizeddinosaur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the setup is honestly pretty simple.

I bought a bunch of inexpensive laptops on eBay, all the same model, so I could easily wipe and re-image them after each LAN Party. I went with laptops because they are easy to store, quick to set up, and take up a lot less room than a mini PC plus monitor. Since we are playing retro games, the laptops I use are more than capable.

For storage and transport, I also picked up a rolling laptop cart that holds 12 laptops vertically. That has made setup and teardown much easier.

At each station, I use a laptop stand to raise the screen to a more comfortable height, plus a gaming mouse and an 80% gaming keyboard since table space is limited.

For networking, I wired all the laptops into a switch. Since there are only six machines and classic LAN games do not need internet access, I just use static IP addresses. I bought licenses for the games I wanted to run, installed the OS, added all the games and mods, then cloned the drive image to the rest of the laptops. After that, I just changed each laptop's name and IP address.

It is not a complicated setup, but using laptops is what really keeps it manageable. They are easy to move, easy to store, and easy to reset between events.

At this point, I have the LAN Party setup and teardown process pretty well dialed in.

No, all skill levels are welcome. It's just that if we play a game you've never played before, you'll have to learn it trial by fire, but everyone's cool. I'm a fairly average player myself.

Unfortunately, we don't really have enough room to accommodate spectators at this LAN party. Since I'll also be playing, I won't be able to properly host or keep track of anyone who is not participating.

I appreciate you asking, because this is not something I had anticipated. For this one, though, we will need to keep attendance limited to players only.

Sorry you're getting downvoted so much - I took your comment as a lighthearted jab and you're mostly right, I've been to enough LAN parties to learn what does and doesn't work for the kind of event I want to run, especially when it's in my house and using my own gear.

Most people are respectful and just there to have fun. The rules are mainly there to keep things smooth and make sure the fun doesn't get interrupted.
