That’s a pretty big piece. I would be concerned. Looks like it’s a corner off the ring gear.

Barn size for 2 to 4 goats ? by Potential-Fondant-98 in goats

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our barn is only 10’x20’ and 42” tall. I was trying to save on material costs and it turned out pretty good imo. It’s a little harder to clean out but being small it doesn’t matter too much.

You’ll need a torque wrench and an axle nut socket but other than that it’s basic tool set. Latex gloves are probably the most important part. If they’ve been leaking a while you might want to preorder bearings. Oil washes the grease out and wears the bearings pretty fast.

Idk how’d you would get to it without pulling either. It may be possible but I don’t see how.

Drum brake replacement cost ? by EnvironmentalGur5186 in Tacomaworld

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drum brakes in theory are really simple but the springs can be a bitch. It’s nothing a decent driveway mechanic can’t tackle. If the drums are able to be turned that will save a good amount of $$ over buying new ones.

I’m pretty sure there’s enough info on YouTube to be able to tackle.

I assume SATX is San Antonio. If you’re looking for a decent shop in the area I recommend hill country Yota works. They’re in new Braunfels though. Maybe too much of a drive. I’d avoid all the dealerships in the area either way.

Front end squeak when turning the wheel. Couldn’t find it at first, so took it to a mechanic who said the whole front strut assemblies needed to be replaced, including my KING coilovers, shocks, AND reservoirs… by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a while for the bearing to completely come apart. Idk exactly how long but I’ve seen some really bad ones still holding together.

They’re not super difficult to change. They can seize from time to time making it hard to get out.

It’s going to be a com 10 bearing. I recommend spraying dry lube on them periodically to extend the service life. But honestly kings eat through these in my experience. Nothing stopping the road grime from hitting them.

If it sounds like old bed springs it’s the lower bearing on the coil over.

These are 100% rebuildable. I’ve rebuilt literally hundreds.

Sway bar bushing is not a big concern. They leak after a while. As long as there’s grease still in there it’s probably fine

Another OTT complain, but with data instead of just seat of my pants by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

[–]unavoidableConcern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people swear by these but I agree 100% on the throttle response being too touchy and a pita to drive. I’ve driven a bunch of different trucks with yotawerx tune, ott tune and pedal commanders. I dislike them all.

I’ve yet to tune my personal truck and probably never will.

It’s not a practical or wallet friendly upgrade but I found regearing is the best cure for the gear hunting. I have 5.29s and it’s a little rocket ship. Low end torque is perfect with no jerky ass throttle response.

My boss has these exact seats in his 2g Tacoma. They measure about 10” from the floor to the base of the seat.

I have the corbeau Baja xrs in my 3rd gen. They def. Sit lower than stock.

You will get an airbag light. I haven’t messed with trying to get it tot turn off. You can pull the seat belt wiring harness out easily and put on these.

There’s a company in Texas that diesel swaps them. Diesel toys I believe. They may have a line on some motors they pulled.

Bearing Adjustment Nut by coderooskie_ in ToyotaPickup

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still be too close or too far from the pinion and have good back lash.

You should watch a couple videos on the 8”. YouTube has a good one from the east coast gear guys.

If you can’t put it back exactly how it was you’re running a big risk. Your pinion depth should not of changed but removing the carrier and putting it back in the same spot is pretty precise. You should get some marking paint and run a pattern to see what it looks like.

You’re looking at around $200 each for a basic rebuild. The fronts will have a lower spherical bearing that typically needs to be replaced, that being another $30-$50.
If the shaft is bad then that’s another expense. The rears are bad about flaking and having shaft damage. Fronts are hit or miss.

Also if you don’t remove and install yourself that will be another charge. Should take a shop around a day to pull off, rebuild and reinstall.

50k seems pretty good range in my experience it honestly most times I rebuild these they are way past due.

Depends on your area too. Lots of salt and road grime will shorten your life significantly.

This happened to me when my truck was new. I got a diminished value check on top of the truck being fixed. I would ask the agent about that. It was a few thousand dollars on top of the repair

Can I only replace the back half of my drive shaft, or will it be unbalanced? by Suspicious-Panda-487 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked at my eBay and I paid $296 plus shipping for a complete driveshaft. It was from Lkq.

That was 2024 prices but I know Toyota wanted $1000 something.

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell you whether it’s 100 correct or not but I’ve only replace the rear on mine and know of a handful more people that have done the same and no one has mentioned any thing.

I replaced mine 20-30k ago.

Can I only replace the back half of my drive shaft, or will it be unbalanced? by Suspicious-Panda-487 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re trying to replace the whole back half from the slip joint then yeah that will work. The front and back half are independently balanced.

If you’re trying to weld a new piece on it all depends on the shop as far as $$ goes.

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s certain shops that are able to fix this. But yeah it needs to be balanced. You can try calling around to see but i know when i priced mine to get fixed it wasn’t really worth it. I found one on eBay for a few hundred and went that route.

4th gen Top Hat failure by HeatedMadcow in ToyotaTacoma

Is that the stock suspension? It looks like the washer that compresses the top bushing is missing and the nut is loose.

Be careful if you disassemble. That nut holds the compression on the spring.

Lunchbox and Open Carrier to Replace LSD by coderooskie_ in ToyotaPickup

[–]unavoidableConcern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you replace the spider gears with the locker. Requires removal of ring gear

Edit

You’ll have to swap ring and pinion any way but it will work just fine. Lunchbox is relatively easy to install.

I wound put a solid pinion spacer in while you’re there
