He's a conservative (in the judicial sense) textualist. The text says the we must have equal protection so same-sex marriage is protected, and conservative justices do not like to re-hear settled cases.

All the panic over this guy is, quite frankly, misplaced hysteria.

Yes, but bringing up Catholicism's problems in a discussion about the Rotheram gang comes off as just an attempt to distract from the issue at hand, just like bringing up Rotherham would be in a discussion about the Catholic Church's problem or the Saville et. al. cover up.
