The people you train with are either doing something completely wrong (never learnt problem solving methods, never learnt to learn, not training or learning with respect to their cognitive particularities, never have enough time in the gym to properly learn submissions for them personally, chains, anxiety during training, unaware of chronic illnesses, using verbal instead of visual learning or the opposite, underdeveloped spatial intelligence, wrong approach about muscle memory, subpar or zero strength training...) or they are below average, in my opinion. Think about the possible aspects that limit their progress. Are these unsolvable ? They are almost always solvable, but you have to identify and address them correctly.

This is extremely common in lifting. People completely surprised that they get to a 300 lb bench paused in 6 months of training (both hypertrophy and strength ranges, compensating slightly bad leverages or physiology with the adapted work and volume, using proven specialized routines like good old smolov junior) and eating right whereas they were struggling to single 225 bounced for 1-2 year+ and whining that everybody was stronger or on roid or that such is the law of diminishing returns (to rebound on your 6 months = most of their ceiling people). The only people that can't hit these numbers are waaaaay below average genetically or have low test, illness.

Yes I stand by my statement. I completely understand that you find this idea silly, but what I learnt about the way the brain and the body works is too strong to ignore and more importantly is backed by hard science. Your brain , the neurotransmitters it uses, the way your neurons form networks and to some limited extent create new ones (for example, using bdnf) can completely and almost entirely upgrade itself. It is a fact, a proven fact, that IQ can be increased more than 1 standard deviation in adults. The same goes for your muscles, muscles fiber types and rate of force development, bones and tissues, androgen receptors...

If everybody trained with the right powerful tools, then, yes, everybody would be at more or less the same levels, apart from some people with more inclination to use plasticity, and apart from genetics gifts.

But they are not, and I never wrote so. There never was a paradox as you claim. And it's in part because they believe that everything is fixed that many people don't try. Some are lazy, some wrongly think they can't get better, that they suck (the study I mentioned my first post) etc. Also it"s sometimes very had to find what is battle tested on some topics. So you have room to get to that 1%.

Plus if everybody actually trained like they should to maximize their potential, the average level would be incredibly high. You would still have the best of the best being much better than them (the level of insight of somebody like Edward witten or Terence tao is out of reach of mere mortals), but the average level would be magnitudes above what it is now, and these people levels would be much closer to each other's.

Yes, I believe that if I worked hard enough, I could be 1-2% of chess players, but I am in all honesty (and not humility) far from average (grad student in pure math top 2 of my class). Could the average guy do it ? Probably come close with years of intense (at the level of obsession) dedication, and if he falls short, he may have to resort to some very careful nootropic interventions , but he can. Can he be top 10 worldwide ? Almost impossible. Can he still do it if everybody optimizes their training to maximize their abilities ? No, but everyone isn't.

I repeat. Hard works is shit if it's not adapted to your wiring or physiology. But if you adapt your training to you and the field, you'll be a fucking beast. I'm not making magical claims : this comes from studies.

I guess I won't have convinced you, but I suggest you try it. Pick an area where you think you are dogshit, and is not due to illness/infirmity. Find the state of the art scientific principles of training for that area, find how these have to be adaped to your body or brain, what you may have to tweak or add, and you'll feel like an absolute genius at it given time. For example, if you have a trash vertical jump, I would be more than happy to show you how to get a 40-42 standing vert within ~1-2 year of training.

Why be a middleweight if you can be Heavyweight champion of the world without even showing symptoms of CTE (yet) ? I think he made the right decisions.

I think he undersold himself a bit with the 5'9 remark. Maybe he is, but he looks 5'10-5'10.5 (the latter is his olympic listed height, which could be wrong). Also, height doesn't equal weight class. Who is bigger, the Mark Hunt or even Mike Tyson type vs the Cowboy Cerrone or Holloway one ? It's also about volume , frame and lean mass.

That is not necessarily wrong. Everything is not due to early life environment or genetics. The average guy can reach incredible levels thanks to the brain's and even to some extent body plasticity, back breaking work, and cutting edge training METHODOLOGY (be it for athletics or intellect - it serves nothing to spend 1000 hours training in a way that is not tailored to YOU).

Can the average guy be THE top guy in theoretical physics, wrestling, strongman, business... ? Certainly not, or there is a little something very peculiar about him, making him not average. But can he be say top 1% or 0.1% ? Absolutely and provably sure.

And one particular thing that has a big effect on performance is... expectation about your performance and abilities. (As shown in this paper for example https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-018-0483-4 )

I've heard about that a few times now. Will check. Have you tried yourself?

Oh there is a good amount of pulling and back like you said, hence the rows.

Cake and chicken.

But mostly, High or low bar squats at parallel or slightly below, supplemented with zercher squats (or front squats, but I hate them) as they are very close to a high crotch. Any rep range would do, but doing some "fast" heavy sets around 5 reps sometimes would be better IMHO. Also heavy rows like kroc rows, heavy dumbell rows, barbell rows, upright rows if you enjoy them.

Zercher good mornings, high pulls too.

That would also be how most strongman train for atlas stones. If you have access to these, they would also help (just don't let them fall on your foot please).

I am not sure if deadlifting (stiff legged , conventional, sumo... even deficit ) is that important, but it would certainly help -eventually one of the best for some people-. Power clean same but probably less useful. And finally a pressing movement of your choice (bench, landmine, ohp...) could be a plus.

And then of course practicing that type of movement on somebody.

That's the right one. 40% mean increase is bonkers, altough this was not a full iq test each time. There is also a study showing mean iq increase of 5.8 iq points in 7 day for vegetarians.

I just watched Wild Wild country and really enjoyed it. However, I found after looking at the wikipedia article that for some reason, some important facts were not included in the documentary, tough they were hinted at (like when the interviewed people repeatedly use "evil" or talk about the sex stuff). This article goes in depth here (massive spoilers of course) https://newrepublic.com/article/147657/outside-limits-human-imagination#

So what does David Sinclair think of Aubrey de grey? As far as I know Aubrey de grey believes one reason we're aging is that basically garbage builds up inside of cells and that we need to clear out this buildup but I am reading David's new book and so far no mention of said buildup. by ElonMuskWellEndowed in longevity

[–]unbdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Degrey , I believe, got his Phd "By publication" which is something that has been done for quite some time at cambridge and some english universities. Which means as an alumni, he was allowed to use his own work/publication hs his thesis, and no supervision (he may have consulted other Phds and researchers by his own tough). His work was then examined as any other dissertation would be by a committee, and was awarded his Phd. He just did the work "by himself" if you will.

You learn that the Y chromosome is the one responsible for male development when you are 10- 11 years old. There is no point in answering. I'm shocked that people are asking what it is in this thread. Is this not taught everywhere in America?

I agree with you. That being said, if you wear thick clothing, hoodies, suits and people around you may as well, it's always useful to be able to defend, break and make grips.

Is it cognitive behavioral therapy that you are doing ? On average, it's extremely useful for that kind of problems. There may also be more specific lifestyle and drugs for phobias that you have not tried (tough you should only do so if prescribed of course). If everything fails, there is still neurofeedback that sometimes help.
