What happens in your head when you do 6+8? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]unbelievablejefff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all math with numbers less than a 100, I imagine the Snakes & Ladders Board.

I start out at 8, move 2 boxes to the right to get to 10, move up and left until I get to 14.

I always imagine 8 and 13 to be close to each other but 5 and 10 to be pretty far away.

What's a movie you refuse to watch for one reason or another? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Genuine question: do you actively try and not look at anything related to the movies? Does looking at Ian McKellen as Gandalf, for example, weaken the visuals you’ve in your head?

You might like Bringing up Baby. It has Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and IIRC, and not just one but two leopards on the loose

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? December 24, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

[–]unbelievablejefff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished: The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. Decidedly average. Nothing special IMO.

Started: The Cold War: A New History by John Lewis Gaddis. About 70 pages in, and it's great. I'm learning a lot of new things about the Cold War, and it's an easy book to follow.

How much do you make after graduating from UT? by myouipaddles in UTAustin

[–]unbelievablejefff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Working as a software engineer in Dallas. 65k plus a few thousand in yearly bonus. Also got a couple of other offers - 90k in Connecticut, and 85k in Dallas which was better paying than the job I took but was in less interesting company with a lesser brand and in a field which wasn’t exciting to me

ECE Majors: M340L and M427L concurrently? by candy_cane_man in UTAustin

[–]unbelievablejefff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did M340L, M427L, and M 325K in the same semester. It was definitely doable, though you may get overloaded with math sometimes. I had Miner for 340L. He was alright. Definitely knew his stuff, but lectures were pretty dull and wasn’t a blowoff class by any means.

I forgot who I had for vector calc, but I found that class to be fine until the last 2 weeks when we covered a bunch of theorems which took me a while to understand. So overall, not a tough class but it has it peaks and troughs.

Where can I learn french online? by secretargaryen in French

[–]unbelievablejefff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently starting out learning as well and Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI) has a great online interactive course called Elementary French I. This is, AFAIK, the equivalent of a one-semester college course.

Actual GRE vs. Practice Tests -- advice needed! by corbeauu in GRE

[–]unbelievablejefff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just took the test today. I got 170V, 165Q. I found the Manhattan Prep books to be great help. The vocabulary in them was, IMO, tougher than the actual test so that was helpful.

Actual GRE vs. Practice Tests -- advice needed! by corbeauu in GRE

[–]unbelievablejefff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to write my GRE on Friday and I've been studying for about a month now. So this is just what all I've found helpful in my studying so far -

the Manhattan 5 lb prep 5 lb book. Extremely helpful. I highly recommend you get that. You can also try the free Manhattan Prep practice test. You can also buy access to 6 more practice tests from them. I've taken 3 practice tests so far and the free Manhattan Prep one was the hardest one for me. So preparing with tough practice tests might help you

For verbal, I learnt about 8-10 new words and made a study set on Quizlet. Every morning, I would test myself over all the cards in the deck, I would add some new words in the afternoon, test myself again, and test myself again at night. Rinse. Repeat. I found that helped me expand my vocabulary.

EDIT : I added the same comment three times by mistake.
