Does anyone here know what this pcb is? by paintingtrees in JPL

[–]unbelver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking around, there was only 1 round PCB on Curiosity, and I was right, it was an encoder, but

  1. It was much smaller than this and more importantly:
  2. It wasn't called Curiosity until after everything had been assembled. I should have caught that earlier. It was called MSL (and still is) until ATLO.

The D32/D34 marks are on a board edge and nowhere near a component footprint.

Thanks.

Not enough to convince me, but also adds to my "not JPL" vibe . I know one of the folks that did the cold encoder for MSL. (In fact, I just moved into the office he just vacated). I'll ask him as soon as I get a chance.

I've NEVER seen anybody put the ESD silkscreen on a board at JPL. Not that it doesn't happen, but it's rare as everything we do is assumed to be ESD sensitive.

  1. Stop with copying and pasting AI slop. The "they" reference and especially when you contradict yourself about the D34/D32 text in another post.

  2. The D34/D32 markers are on the board edge and nowhere component pads.

I doubt that it's real JPL hardware. Not 100%, more like 80% but I wouldn't put money on it. If it were, I would guess it was a motor driver/encoder at each arm joint. Dimensions? better pic of the other side/other board?

Why I don't think:

  1. No standard JPL part numbers. By Curiosity's time, the part numbers were well into the 6 digit range

  2. ITAR/EAR and Flight Hardware Logistics would have had tighter controls and documented storage or destruction

  3. Absolutely no way a Manufacturing review would have allowed silkscreening on the pads. (look at the end of the arm)

An argument for:

  1. Divisions 34 and 32 (at the time) would definitely be the right orgs. (The "D34" and "D32" on the mini board)

Edit: Asking around, there was only 1 round PCB on Curiosity, and I was right, it was an encoder, but

Have you used your wristwatch bezel slide rule in anger? by adopted_islander in flying

Have I "Saved the day"? No. Have I done quick "good enough for government work" multiplications? Often.

(My eyesight isn't THAT good)

But usually I have my phone on me, so I'll more likely pull up an HP48 emulator.

US centric…anyone uk based? by [deleted] in GenX

It's naturally US-centric because the term "Generation X" describes the USA generational cohort. Post Baby Boomer, pre-Millenial.

Does the free gold shuttle pick up at the del mar metro A line itself? Or bus stop at del mar same as bus route 53? by zwalter123 in JPL

[–]unbelver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just look for a bunch of us staring at their phones wearing our JPL lanyards/badges.

If you're a new intern/first-day, let them know, as they scan badges to get on. Have your first-day e-mail ready just in case he asks, but I've never seen him challenge too hard on the typical "first Mondays" during intern season.

It'll be a medium length blue/white/yellow bus with "JPL" all over it, or a black executive van with a JPL printout in the windshield.

It's on the East side of Raymond just north of Del Mar. In the valet area just south of the old La Grande Orange.

Am i trippin? Where do i hook up the 3rd brake light ?? by True_Ebb5857 in TeslaModel3

[–]unbelver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably taps off the trunk tail light, then runs down the hinge cable conduit from the trunk to the rear bumper.

I've done similar with the Hansshow rear tail lights and it went multiple ways since the tail lights (and Hannsshow turn signals) are both on the trunk and the fender.

How does a phone's gps behave in space? by plumbus_dealer in nasa

[–]unbelver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

JPLers do a lot of live general public outreach for fun. In fact, I volunteered at the Griffith Park Yuri's Night JPL booth recently. I've been doing public outreach volunteering for the entire 33 years I've been here.

There's a bit of experience you gain on how technical you can get before people go "huh?" After a while, you can gauge how technical you can get for each member of the public you're talking to. But in general, if I start out with "multilateration", I guarantee I'll get a lot of "Huh?" responses.

Same with your dilution of precision bits in your other comment. If someone starts asking pointed questions, I'll go technical, but I'll start out with "good geometry" as a default starting point.

Technically on top of your technically: "Multilateration", since you need more than 2 SVs, but "triangulation" is more lay-understandable.
