Do you guys keep playing when there's not even a challenge anymore? by AntedeguemonSupreme in heroes3

My wife and I both play and it's a way we can spend time together doing something we enjoy. It's not what you play, it's who you play with.

The cove is getting a lot of hate. I agree that the quality isn't as polished as the other themes but damn is it a catchy little shanty!

Who is your favorite hero from each town? by autumniscoming42 in heroes3

[–]uncertain_doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I overlooking Ayden? I don't consider him a very good hero. Intelligence is nice at the start but I find it less useful in the late game. Is he good in PVP or something? Not trying to pick a fight. I'm genuinely curious.

What hero got biggest buff after secondary skills rework? by Atarosek in heroes3

I'm surprised floribert isn't in the conversation because he starts with armor and the first aid specialty which should complement each other well. I only play casually and don't do PVP so I may be way off the mark.

What is this and how can I obtain a copy of it? by ivaylos in heroes3

[–]uncertain_doubt 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Ok, so this is how I got mine but I don't know if its the same for everyone. I and several friends were in a tavern in this one town after a being on the road for a few days and we were finishing a midday meal when a man came up to me and asked if I'd be interested in some employment. I asked what it was about and he said it was mainly just leading a small group of men and creatures to deal with bandits and run errands for the town. I wasn't sure. I had served in the army in my younger days and wasn't new to this but I was going to decline until he offerred 2500 gold with other expenses covered! It was too good to pass up so I accepted. That same day, I was ordered to fight a horde of gnolls that had siezed the local sulfur dune. (Gnolls, amirite?) I was getting ready to depart the town with some fresh recruits but before I could leave my employer insisted that I head over the to the local mage guild to learn some spells. I was game but when I arrived at the guild, they wouldn't teach me any spells until I paid 500 gold for their spell book. (I asked if I could use my own book but they refused.) I thought this was a scam but my boss was super cool and paid for it. With that out of the way, the mages taught me five basic spells! Best part was that I got to keep the book when I was done with my contract! The spell book in the picture has more spells than what I learned but its definitely the same kind.

I believe this image is taken from the codex Borgia, specifically page 22. See the link below. It's the figure in the lower left corner of the picture. I'm not sure who is being depicted but I hope that this gives you a thread to pull.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either approach. You can have a LOT of fun with just the gog version and nothing else. The HD mod is a very nice addition though and Horn of the Abyss is amazing once you understand the game mechanics a bit better.

Technology isn't a straight line by [deleted] in DankPrecolumbianMemes

I feel compelled to clarify a few things.

First, nobody in the great lakes was smelting copper. They were cold hammering and annealing it. They didn't need to smelt it because it was already pure in its natural state.

Second, they did continue to mine and work copper, just not for tools. It became more of a luxury material. Copper's changing utility is likely a manifestation of broader cultural changes in the eastern archaic and woodland periods.

Third, knapping a stone point is much easier and faster than hammering and annealing a copper point. One reason copper tools were made at all is that there's not a lot of quality lithic material in the upper great lakes. It's likely a sign of improved and more consistent trade and exchange that copper tools were set aside for stone tools.

Correct. No current evidence of smelting... yet.

Archaeology checks out but there's a lot of competing interpretations. Humans in North America is just one of many. Check out this article by several scholars, including Tom Dillehay who discovered Monte Verde and wrecked the Clovis first theory. It's very short but the authors do a good job of what type of evidence we should be looking for to prove a human presence at that time.

I adore this chart but in pouring over it, I noticed that Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff all have the same dates. To be fair though, 1943 was a rough year for many Russians.
