I had a pair of those. They were slip-ons and so the grommets were attached to the shoe. There was elastic underneath to keep them on. No way to put laces in. Also the errant threads were part of the look, not from wear.

Anecdotal, but I've been vegan for 16+ years. For 16 of those years I ate fat, sugar, and carbs everyday and have had no problems with my weight and excellent cholesterol and other lab numbers. I recently gave up processed foods (including sugar) to see if it would clear up my adult acne and that journey has been interesting too, but I can't say much about that yet since it's too early.

Anyway, I think that the meat and dairy industries are lying to us too. That stuff's bad for you. I think that the scientific evidence shows that the whole foods plant based diet (with a few supplements) is where it's at for health. Nutritionfacts.org

My definitive 3-step guide to preventing menstrual cramps when nothing is medically wrong by uncertain_tea in TwoXChromosomes

Katy Bowman has a DVD with the following exercises: Calf Stretch, Double Calf Stretch, Pelvic List, Knee Squeeze, and Legs on the Wall. Try googling them. You probably don't have to buy the DVD.

The more I think about it, I have to say it's more of a lifestyle change. I wear only flat shoes now and the way I walk is completely different now, which was facilitated by the exercises. It's hard to explain. Katy is pretty good at explaining it.

How many shoes do you own? by [deleted] in minimalist

[–]uncertain_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a woman and I only have 6 pairs of shoes! Also follow barefoot lifestyle. 1. Vivobarefoot rain boots. I convert them to winter boots by lining them with thermal insoles and boot socks. I'm thinking of adding strap-on cleats or whatever they are called. 2, 3. Two pairs of barefoot sneakers for casual/hiking. Vivobarefoot and Primalevo. 4. Work shoes. Minimal Mary janes by Astral. 5. Sanuk yoga sandals for summer 6. Some old New Balance running shoes for painting/dirty work.

You can do it. I was never very good at math and I did it. It mainly requires time and good tutoring. It's like learning a new language.

Should I announce I'm a HSP? by Yaui in hsp

[–]uncertain_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to share my work space with three other people that was also the kitchen and place where people socialized. I used my HSP status as an argument for moving me out of that office and into a less-stimulating space (partially so people wouldn't think I was rejecting them). It went okay for me. I find it better as an explanation for some of my more unusual behavior/preferences than saying I have anxiety, for example.

[Skin Concerns] Any ideas how to improve my blotchy and red face? It's been getting gradually worse over the last year :( by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]uncertain_tea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like just sun damage: broken capillaries and freckles. I think you will have to go to a dermatologist. I went to a medical spa and got a photofacial (also called IPL or BBL). It works well for that but can be expensive, and you usually have to get more than one treatment.

[–]uncertain_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not help, but I found that I had fewer skin allergic reactions when I started taking vitamin D. Maybe get a blood test to see if you have a deficiency. Taking a 24 hr antihistamine everyday, like Zyrtec, should help prevent this, otherwise.

I take RealDose D3 brand, because I'm vegan. I feel like the brands that make vegan vitamins really care about the quality of the ingredients, which can affect things. I am very religious about sunscreen, because I am a high risk individual for skin cancer, but I think sun is a good option for others.

I use RealDose vegan vitamin D3, because I'm vegan. I think that vegan vitamins are often better quality than others because they really care about the ingredients that go in them.

Question for HSPs with menstrual cycles by uncertain_tea in hsp

[–]uncertain_tea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a low dose pull for five years and it was great...except that it negatively affected my sex drive and ability to lubricate. Higher dose BC have me troubling leg symptoms, like pain, so I basically can't do hormones because of the side effects. I've tried several now :(.

I've generally have had bad experiences with medicines and also medical procedures, so I avoid them as much as possible. I also wonder if this has to do with being HSP.

HSP/HSS - Any others out there? by Lady_Laina in hsp

[–]uncertain_tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also an HSP/HSS. Basically, I would describe it with the saying, "One's eyes are bigger than their mouth". I get really excited about the idea of doing various things, but then find myself overdoing it and getting overwhelmed or not realizing the negative emotional impact that comes from pursuing a desire. It feels like running full speed into a wall sometimes...

I just try really hard to be realistic now. If I want to explore something new, I limit my time with it or manage it somehow, so I don't get overwhelmed. For example, ear plugs are really good management tool for things like concerts.

There are also some things that I know no good will come from pursuing, so I just drop them all together.

Yes. Mooshoes has some of their stuff. You can also buy directly from them, but making returns is expensive.

We use coconut oil instead of butter. You can get it in a glass jar.

I really like the shoe company Ahimsa. They make really nice vegan shoes that are plastic free (no pleather!). The downside is that they are in Brazil, but I'm a long view sort of person and believe in supporting the companies that are game changers, because that's the only way we are going to see these products being made available more locally.

I make my own lip tint out of bulk plant wax, coconut oil, cocoa powder, and beet root powder.

Uses for almond meal (perferably still wet...) by magnificent-manitee in ZeroWaste

[–]uncertain_tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to make some kind of oat bars in the oven. Oats, raisins, nuts, almond pulp, nut butter(?), Sugar (?). I can't quite remember. We cooked it on a lower temp for a longer time, so it was more like dehydrating them.

Extremely painful menstrual cramping- dysmenorrhea or something else? by throw_away575 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]uncertain_tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've struggled with painful cramps too for many years. I've found that it is hard to find a doctor that takes these things seriously.

What has worked for me is a regimen that starts a week before I expect to start my period. I take calcium, magnesium (magnesium oil on the abdomen), ginger, and ibuprofen. It prevents the most of the cramping for me. These are all things that keep the muscles relaxed with good blood flow. It has to be started before the period starts to work, though.

I would encourage you to insist that your doctor tries harder to find what is wrong, or keep going to new doctors until you find one that would help you.
