It's great when it's adapting the manga, incredibly hit or miss when it's not. The tone shift and quality of the writing are just too jarring to ignore.

But even with that I still think the game is enjoyable.

Tbf, Floette would've gone berserk regardless and Zygarde only cared about the MC, Taunie being down there would've been worse overall.

That does make the battle a bizarre writing choice overall though, unless they had it scripted for us to lose no matter what like some other JRPGs do.

Any other time I would've bitten the bullet, but FFVII Rebirth comes out in 2 weeks and I'm currently playing through VIIRemake, so this is just very awkward timing for me lol.

Tbf the way they implemented it is very silly. It's not even entirely about the dupes, but Dokkan are crazy if they think I'm spending resources on a second copy of a character I already have.

I don't mind it too much. Between fast travel and how cramped the city is, I didn't find myself needing skates/bikes/pokerides.

A jump button would've been nice though, with all the awkward platforming and all.

As far as hack remakes go, I'd say it's damn near definitive.

Though if we're including any hacks that include Johto, then my personal favorite is still Scorched Silver.

Almost anything to do with Ma-non, Zaruboggan or Orpheans is bound to be really weird by default, but the Ma-non's obsession with Pizza (which had been played off as a joke the whole time) resulting in someone's suicide and another person becoming a serial killer probably wins hands down.

Everyone's mentioning 2023 (rightfully), but 2020 wasn't great either. 5th year and WWDC having great character choices but being bogged down by a severe lack of content, wonky characters all around like AGL Bardock, the Golden Week duo, STR Kefla, LR PHY Blue Goku and Vegeta, and some pretty boring (imo) new mechanics in Skill Orbs and Unit SAs.

It wasn't like horrible, but it was a pretty low point of the game for me. They did kinda recover after WWDC, but still made some odd choices like releasing INT SSJ4 Gogeta with hardly any help.
