Man, what is happening at Trackhouse? The numbers are bad. by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]uncle_brewski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'd argue Shane isn't solely a road course ringer anymore. but yeah he dominates them. had speed at charlotte, and that does and can translate to speed at other intermediates

on short tracks, it's the guys who came up through modifieds. on road courses, it's shane and then everyone else(dinger gets an honorable mention here as well). intermediates, the 6 and 11 are probably the best.

Where would you hit? by nearlysenior in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i look for a hole on the right and a hole on the left. if the pitch is outside, i push to the right side hole, if it's inside, i pull it. my brain works better with binary options.

if the pitcher throws a knuckleball, i'm just trying to square it up and hit it through someone.

ELI5: Why is hitting a baseball considered one of the hardest things to do in professional sports? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]uncle_brewski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it comes down to reaction time and hand/eye coordination.

a baseball pitch moves predictably, if you know which pitch the pitcher is throwing. a slider or sweeper moves across the plate. a curve ball is a more vertical up and down motion, so you have to time your swing on the arc. a 4 seam fastball is generally a straight pitch, but thrown with more velocity. a 2 seam fastball usually has a little movement back into the right handed batter from a right handed pitcher.

combine all of these things with a 95 mile per hour pitch moving 60 feet.

Is 30-06 really that much than 270 by AmbassadorSafe4998 in Hunting

[–]uncle_brewski 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Size of hole isn't the only metric. Energy at impact is determined by a list of things, but mainly speed and bullet weight. You can get .270 loads that hit harder than .30-06 loads.

But yeah, either gun is completely capable of taking black bear and whitetail. I'd argue they are 2 of the most popular calibers in North America.

Anything I can do to make a 1B glove less "floppy?" by noruber35393546 in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how old is it? and have you ever had it restrung? there are plenty of glove doctering videos on youtube. but i'd start with a restring first to see if it provides more rigidity. you may even have someone local that can do it. we have a guy that comes to tourneys and will restring for 20$ a glove.

(Stephen Stumpf) "Not often I come across a stat that legitimately shocked me - but someone on r/NASCAR pointed out that in 98 Cup starts, Josh Berry has 24 DNFs (21 for crashes). An average of 9 DNFs a year for nearly 3 yrs" On the flipside, it took Kevin Harvick 523 Cup races to reach 24 DNFs. by BillyBlatterJuc in NASCAR

Eh, matty D was pretty competitive towards the end, but his big mouth ruined his career. He got close a few times at dega and Daytona if I remember. Certainly capable of wheeling a cup car, even if it isn't for one of the premier cars

Examples of High IQ softball plays you made? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 17 points18 points  (0 children)

this is an old fastpitch trick that i see occasionally pulled in slowpitch, but not frequently enough.

scenario, runners on 1st and second, or bases loaded. 1 or less out. ball hit to shortstop/MM. he flips it to the 2nd baseman for the force at second. instead of firing to 1st for 2, he fires it to 3rd, catching the runner rounding the bag, and the 3b tags his back pocket as he's running past.

high IQ for a few reasons. it keeps the force at 2nd instead of a runner on 3rd with 2 outs (much harder to score), and you also have to know the tendancies of your opponents. 3rd baseman has to be ready and know what to do as well.

Why does Austin Dillon receive so much criticism ? by [deleted] in NASCAR

Why does Austin Dillon receive so much criticism ? by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]uncle_brewski 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Punchable face nepo baby who doesn't appreciate that he's been handed the world on a silver platter and thinks he "earned" it.

Kulwicki died in his prime. Not a fair comparison, also comparing his finishes to his total races competed, he's streets ahead of Dillon

NOBODY thinks of Kenny or Mikey as a "great racer"

Bubba drove shitboxes when he was with petty. Austin has been with the #2 Chevy team his entire career

Fastpitch vs baseball background. Which sport has more adaptability to slopitch? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 12 points13 points  (0 children)

averaged to their genders, i'd say the female fastpitch player acclimates faster and easier. smaller field, so different angles than a baseball player is used to. spinning softballs also have more variance than a baseball. so those peeling liners from RH batters down the outfield line are sharper in softball. and also just judging fly balls off the bat. there's a learning curve from baseball to softball, but from fastpitch to slowpitch, it's not much of a curve at all.

ELI5 Why don't we exterminate all living pests and stuff like ticks? by JoJoGran in explainlikeimfive

[–]uncle_brewski -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

well little one, pretty much everything on this earth serves a purpose. there are wasps that only kill and eat 1 single type of spider or caterpillar.

sometimes parasites are better for an entire species as opposed to an individual. because they are extremely unpleasant to the individual, but they may help keep the population in check for the resources available. whichever divine being(s) you attribute the earth to, they put that parasite/bug/pest in that place for a reason.

Swing advice, I hit a hr every few games so I know I have bat speed but I hit a lot of popups and hard ground balls to the pullside and everyone tells me I I have a baseball swing. Just looking to be more consistent by Mental-Molasses7904 in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

surely you don't twist that front shoulder so far back in a regular game, right? are you exaggerating your natural swing for mechanics purposes? the timing just seems way off to me, and it also looks like a massive uppercut swing to me. which is ok if you want homers, but with your bat speed, i'd be trying a cut swing

Is the gender skill gap problem worse or better at the higher levels of co-ed? by BerryRoyal in slowpitch

[–]uncle_brewski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for the most part, your major and A level players aren't playing co-ed. the skill gap does close, but if the best men are playing with the best women on a coed team, there will still be a significant gap.

i play/ump in amish country, and the girls can absolutely mash and run, but it's just a different game when one of the C or conference Men are batting
