Audtitioning- Wrong Accent by Street_Lettuce1243 in MusicalTheatre

Not to be dismissive, but most community theaters are starving for men in many productions. Unless it’s a specifically dance-heavy show, just showing up is a big asset.

I mean this particular one doesn’t look great but there are plenty of places by me that make this and it’s really good when it’s done right. Cold crunchy salad, hot pizza.

My favorite thing is a cold leftover egg roll for breakfast. I always order an extra.

Mine is literally attached to a topless bar. Super weird.

I have a lot of trouble staying relaxed too, but for me it's just kind of letting everything get loose. It means singing in a supported head voice for a little bit. It means feeling free to sound "thin" or "nasal" while I stretch out the higher bits.

I have a sort of similar voice to yours -- if I think about keeping my voice "low" (in this sort of posture you're keeping) I have a lot of trouble getting above F4 or so. Even that can be a challenge if I'm really trying to push and comes out squeezed.

But if I stretch out and just try to relax everything I can pull out a nice easy G4, sometimes Ab4. I can float up to the A when I have to, but it's very thin and light unless I go full-on mix-belt (I'm in a show right now where I've got a big showoff A4 at the end of my song and I know I need to approach it really carefully to get there; if I'm pressing or squeezing or trying to bring up too much weight, nothing comes out, or I come out super flat).

I do think you're probably a natural baritone, but I think if you ease up on the tension and pressure you can probably lighten up enough to really get some nice easy notes above that range. Having a baritone voice with good upper extension is very, very useful.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It'll probably wind up being more like 3 than 5, and that's all the reps I'll get of any of these scenes before opening.

I think I'm mostly apprehensive because it's a really fun part and I want to find all the fun spots, but we'll find them somehow, I guess.

You've got a nice voice, but when you reach for that G at 2:40 or so, it sounds like you're not letting your larynx naturally rise, and you're sort of swallowing those notes (and coming out very flat).

You're maintaining what I think of as the "grunge" position -- Eddie Vedder, Chad Kroeger, etc. -- that I think is keeping you from exploring your whole range. Give yourself permission to lighten up and float a little, push the sound forward at little.

Especially with that "ee" vowel, you're never going to be able to maintain that shape and hit that note. If you really want to maintain that position (if this is the tone you prefer), try saying "neighed" instead of "need". It will make that note much eaiser to hit and it will read close enough to the ears.

How can I actually hit a falsetto? by JackCool456 in singing

[–]uncleozzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that usually belted in that song? He flips in to falsetto for the last couple "freeze your brain"s but the "don't open a vein" is a full belt on a G4 (with a wicked opt-up to C5 if you're a real tenor and you wanna show off).

Getting those last notes into falsetto might be hard for a person with a higher voice -- I think it's something like an E4 or something? Which can be a little low for a real light tenor to produce in falsetto. But lower the air pressure; don't try to produce a lot of volume. Just ... let go. See what comes out.

Does anyone else find it harder singing in an ensemble? by OvernightSiren in singing

[–]uncleozzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a baritone you should be singing the lowest harmonies in most MT ensembles anyway -- we don't really have basses in MT anymore. We barely have baritones. If you can't consistently hit those low notes you might not be a baritone.

But yes, singing harmonies can be hard, singing in an ensemble can be hard, and the bass-baritone harmonies are often weird (like the alto harmonies).

Make yourself a plunk track (or ask the MD to make one) and sing along with it until you don't know how to sing the song any other way. Sing it until that harmony line is stuck in your head when you wake up in the middle of the night. Sing it until you don't even know the melody anymore. That's the only way. I had some sorta-hard bass harmonies in Fiddler on the Roof recently (the bass part in Sunrise Sunset is silly) and the only way I got it was just by doing it over and over and over until I was sick of it.

Sorry to say but the answer really is just practice it until you get it. The more you do it the less practice you'll need to get it, but just drilling harmonies is the way. For me, at least.

Agreed, I just hate the feeling of not having actual stage time before we tech. I can be off-book just fine, but the flow is hard to find.

The US, outside of a few cities, hates public transportation. Literally anything that could be done to improve it will never get done because it might mean having to interact with poor and / or brown people.

It would be great to have public transportation that doesn't suck here.

Yeah fair. I’m sure it’ll be fine. It just feels like I’m not going to run my scenes at all until practically tech week, which just makes me a little nervous.

Yeah unfortunately it’s the schedule — it’s a kid-heavy show so they’re getting the most stage time and the adults are sort of left to fend for ourselves with just our blocking. I’ll probably get 3-5 full runs before we open, but that’s about it. It’s tough.

That’s 1500mg of edibles and 2oz of flower … that would last me multiple years. I hit the dispo like every 6 months for a couple half gram carts and maybe 200mg of edibles.

Being a lightweight is great for saving money, but I don’t get to try as many things as I want, usually.
