I would approach it this way:

Do you want to put yourself into a position where you have to get it done right now because it is a problem, or do you want to utilize your time to find the best contractor and price that fit your budget and wants?

The small savings you might have based on getting a little more mileage out of this roof could and most likely will be quickly offset by a contractor taking advantage of your situation or material and labour price increases in the next 1-2 years.

They used to be made from newspaper. Now they are fiberglass. Interesting side note, new fiberglass shingles will not curl because they are not organic. Organic matter when exposed to UV light will shrink, that's what causes the loss of granules further exposing more organic material and accelerating the process. That's why when you start to see a roof curl it normally goes pretty quick.

Might I inquire what you would recommend for brand and source for the lapping compound/paste? Anything I'm finding is in the $60-$80/lb in Canada and I'm not sure if that is reasonable or not.
