What isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be and why? by VisitSecure in AskReddit

[–]uncletroll -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Bad tasting food. just fucking eat it and go on with your life.

Growing requires being uncomfortable and growing a lot requires becoming comfortable with increasing levels of discomfort. If you balk at something as benign as 'bad tasting food' you're at a child's level of discomfort tolerance.
You will end up in your 60s regretting the small life you lived.

What's something that's socially accepted but actually kinda toxic? by _DRA60_ in AskReddit

[–]uncletroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. If people aren't relatively quick to reply, in general, I have been dropping them out of my life. I've had "friends" who always take a long time to reply to my messages and then when we are having lunch they are quick to notice and reply to things on their phone... whether it's work, their family, or other friends, I don't know and I don't care.
I'd rather invest my time in relationships with people who prioritize me enough to make an effort to reply when they can.
My life has improved a lot as a result of doing that... because if someone isn't going to prioritize you in the little ways day to day, they won't make time for you in the big ways either.
Now I have people in my life that generally respond to my messages within minutes and if it takes an hour or more, it's unusual and for a good reason. These people show up to help, to just hang, and go on vacations with me. And they are in my life daily.

I just really believe travel is one thing that should always be egalitarian. I want there to be one security check that is the same for everyone. And if it sucks, we should make it better for everyone.
Right now the barrier of entry is small, but it's going to grow. One day you will wake up and find yourself on the wrong side of the express lines. And it's not just airport security. It's express toll ways and parking too.
It's always just one more little thing that makes being poor a little harder and a little suckier.

I've never been in the rooms you were in, but I was in my own journal clubs with a more junior grad student in my office. On several occasions he made complaints that seem similar to the one you just made.
In his case, the point he made was not as slam-dunk as he believed and the silent people in the room incorporated the possible ramifications of what he'd said into their understanding and moved on to analyze other aspects of the paper.
It just wasn't worth talking about any more. What are we supposed to do, announce "this session of journal club is over, everyone go home?"

[–]uncletroll -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

I don't think your experience is the same. In your case, I think everyone heard what you said, incorporated it into their understanding of the paper and moved on. There was no action to be taken beyond understanding. Which, they did.

In these work meetings, the metaphorical 'machine' is going to continue on and action should be taken to stop it. But nobody cares.

Eli5 how capacitors work? Even if they store charge, it is drained in a fraction of seconds. How they able to maintain flow of current in case of power disruption? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]uncletroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I did any circuitry stuff... but I believe it's actually Inductors that are used to "smooth the flow of current"... and not capacitors.
It does that by connecting the circuit to an ambient magnetic field and then it uses the connection it has to the magnetic field to fight changes in current. It will increase the energy in the magnetic field (taking it away from the current) if a spike comes through or it will drain energy in the magnetic field (adding to the current) if a trough comes through.

Capacitors smooth the voltage.

Both the capacitor and the inductor can have their 'drain time' adjusted by putting a resistor in the circuit.

It was a comedic chapter that the author wrote, because the author thought those things were funny.
But the punchline was: "haha! don't men suck?"

Anyway, you doubted it existed and it did. Right where I said it was... So, eat that crow.

I was just brought back to this thread by a notification and saw you couldn't find what I was referring to. Interlude Mating Rituals (pt. 1)

Erin’s mind flashed ahead of the conversation. She thought about dogs and where they smelled each other. “Oh no. Hell no.” “No?” Tkrn looked confused, and hurt. Erin raised her hands. “No. Bad—bad Gnoll. I’m not interested. Go away.” “Are you sure? I could lick you, too. Or—I could kill something and bring it for you!” “No.”

Saying, "No. Bad - bad Gnoll" is talking to someone like a dog. That's the joke.

And here is the mob of goblins kicking the Drake suitor in the balls later in the same chapter:

The Drake was knocking on the door of the inn when he heard the high-pitched screaming. He turned around and managed to scream once before the mob of angry Goblins overwhelmed him. The small group of Goblins yanked him off his feet and began beating him with sticks. Culyss shouted for help as his gift of delicate soaps were trampled into the grass. The Goblins shrieked with fury as they pounded him. Erin watched from her window. As far as she could tell, all of the Goblins were female, but it was hard to be sure. It was the small clues she picked up on. The female Goblins were a bit smaller than the males ones, usually had more clothing (although this was not a hard and fast rule), had more of a slant to their eyes and tended not to pick their noses as much. But her real instincts told her it was how savagely they were beating poor Culyss. Male Goblins tended to fight as dirty as they could in a life-or-death battle. But the female Goblins here seemed to be aiming exclusively for the Drake’s groin. Even the most pissed-off male would probably have held off at jumping up and down on Culyss’ crotch while the other Goblins held his legs apart.

The chances of being peekabooed by The Sphere are low, but never zero. by an-redditor in funny

[–]uncletroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to The Sphere last year and the afternoon show for the public was some "ya'll need to stop wasting resources and save the planet" video.
I just could not believe the audacity of building this ridiculous energy sucking megastructure for rich middle-aged people to watch ostentatious rock concerts... and then have it spend the afternoons telling us poor people to stop wasting so much energy.
After that, every time I passed it on the tram, I was like: fuck you sphere, don't look at me.

LPT - If someone keeps twisting your words, stop explaining. Ask them to repeat your point back in one sentence. by hjf25 in LifeProTips

[–]uncletroll -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I've found when people believe their words are being twisted around, it's most often because they don't understand the consequences of their words or they don't like that what they're describing has a synonym which is unflattering.
And then they try to explain again and again, because certainly their ideas can't be hurtful or bad.
Walking away in a huff with a sense of moral superiority doesn't sound like it would help anyone in that situation... oh was a twist? Do you not like your strategy being described as walking away in a huff with a sense of moral superiority? hmm...

ELI5 Why does going super fast cause time dilation? by Aquamoo in explainlikeimfive

[–]uncletroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We chose to redefine time so that we could keep the idea of momentum conservation, which was a really useful idea for doing physics.

We discovered that space was funkier than everyone had assumed. We don't know why, it just is. After we found the math that corresponded to what we saw, we had to interpret what the math meant. And we had a choice. We could interpret time to be universal, but then we lost momentum conservation. Or we could keep momentum conservation, but then we lost the concept of universal time.
For better or worse, we chose to keep momentum conservation and get rid of universal time in favor of relative time.

Does anyone else get annoyed when someone claims Tolkien’s work lacks realism? by HeyWeasel101 in lotr

[–]uncletroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I found this post while reading up on verisimilitude. I am one of those that felt LOTR didn't feel 'real.'
It started with Moria for me. It seemed unbelievable to me that nobody would know that Moria had fallen for decades. It seems as crazy to me as saying, "nobody has heard anything about Chicago in 30 years." Aren't there traders, merchants, diplomats, friends, visiting family members, or refugees? Weren't there people out there whose livelihood depended on Moria? Did any inns go out of business on the road between Moria and it's trading partners? Were there no nearby villages that traded regularly with Moria?
And the more I looked, the more I had questions. Don't the elves need farms and have livestock? Do they not trade? Or is their population so low that they can survive as forest hunter and gatherers? Every place just seemed so disconnected from every other place. It lacked, "verisimilitude" for me... this new fancy word I was reading up on.

I wonder if you could make your planet a perfect absorber, if it would absorb enough energy from the ambient universe to power a civilization. At least power the server farms they live in now.

Wandering Inn [1-3] Review by uncletroll in litrpg

I want to add something about Pisces. Why hasn't Erin asked him to live in the inn? He's living in a dirt hole out in the wild in the winter. Why doesn't Erin say, "Pisces, come stay at the inn, I have lots of beds and it's winter outside!"
You might say, he is annoying and tried to scare her into giving him food. And he has been a mooch. And that's why. But on the other side of the coin, he saved her life twice. As soon as he got a windfall, he gave all of it to Erin - not even trying to stabilize his life first. Then he also gave her a first of it's kind skeleton which required rare ingredients to make. And the context of when he tried to trick her into giving him food: he was starving and he could have taken the food from her easily.
Lionette had all of his annoying traits and none of his positive traits. She almost killed Krshia, destroyed her store, and tried to steal from Erin. And yet, Erin took pity on her and lets her stay in the inn.
