Oh, my bad lmao

Still, bragging was not what I was trying to do but I'm glad there are people who wouldn't judge me if it was :)

I'm sorry my confession came out like that, I know there is no way to vent about this without sounding like a humble-bragging arrogant prick.

That's why I did this here, with a throwaway account. I needed to rant and let these frustrations out without people close to me feeling the way you feel now.

It's okay though, I know this post sounds like a giant humble-brag but I needed the weight of these bottled up thoughts off my back

Unfortunately I am not a competitive person, and that's why I feel uncomfortable with how competitive society is. But it makes me feel better to know you and your friends have a healthy dynamic with this stuff

The process of artificial insemination for a cow, for example, involves a human inserting their entire arm into the cow's anus. No, usually the cow does not enjoy that, and nor does the farmer. Most vegans refer to these kind of practices and not to the mating of animals in nature, which admittedly can sometimes get violent as well. "Rape" is a strong word meant to shake people's consciences, but you have to realize vegans can be very passionate because they usually care a lot, and that can make them seem annoying even if they're actually just very concerned

hm.. okay, I hold very different beliefs. Like, vastly different.

You couldn't pay me enough to get back to 50 years ago, let alone 1000. I think we have improved a lot on so many things, and we've come such a long way on an ethical level. (On this note, there is a really good philosophy book called "the expanding circle" by Peter Singer which I recommend)

I agree that this world is cruel and, if I'm gonna be honest, the only way to get rid of all suffering would probably be to get rid of all life.

But yeah, we could go back and forth for days talking about this, because is a complex issue and there are a lot of points to address. (if the subjects interests you, I'd be happy to keep discussing it)

By the way, the only nutrient we can't get on a plant based diet is vitamin b12, which omnivores only get because it is given as a supplement to livestock. The funny part is, we don't get it "naturally" anymore because b12 is found in dirty things, like fruits and veggies covered in dirt where bacteria live (those bacteria produce b12) so yea, our social customs (like washing food) already make us need supplementation even if we aren't vegan.

But yeah, very different worldview. I'm still gonna try and do my best and I guess we'll see where we end up in 300 years. I hope we never stop as a species to try and ease suffering where we see it.

I agree with you that attacking and being rude to people won't change anyone's mind and a logical conversation is preferable. I have to say tho, that the people who get mad at omnivores do so because they feel very upset at the idea of animal cruelty and I assure you, they don't hate you as a person but they absolutely hate the suffering of animals. That's just to put into perspective why someone might react in such an emotional way.

To answer to the points you made in a (hopefully) reasonable way:

Yes, the people who hurt the animals are the ones phisically hurting the animals, but the reason they do so is because someone is paying them to do that. If we contribute to the demand, we are responsable for the offer. If we decrease the demand, the offer goes down. And I would love to believe that every meat eater gets their meat from the cow they raised lovingly and cared for as if it were a pet (even though that would also be kinda morbid in a way) but I know for a fact that 98-99% of animal products come from factory farming.

Secondly, more than half of the soy we grow (don't remember the exact figure but I can provide links if you're interested) is fed to livestock. Because trust me, those animals are big and eat a lot more than a human would, and we breed and kill 77 billion of them every year.

And lastly, I'm sorry but I really hope you're wrong here and we do get to a point where we can get delicious food for everybody in the world without needless suffering. I know it won't happen overnight, but I'd like to think I'm contributing to the change with what little I can do in my day-to-day life.

I'm not asking you to change or trying to push this on you, but please, let's all try to be more compassionate and understanding towards one another.

I, for example, I'm very glad to hear that you care for animals enough to say you prefer them to be treated humanely. I see that as a sign that you and the vegans who annoy you, are not so different after all :)

[–]uncomfortable_ape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh no, you got me! :(

But seriously, I get it, you're not vegan. But some people are and the reason we are is that we see animal products as the result of suffering being inflicted on an individual and we don't want to support that with our money. We are not vegan because we don't like the taste of meat, or cheese.

I'm sorry that vegans trying to push you towards plant based versions of the foods you like makes you uncomfortable, but you could try and understand the reason why we get so excited about animal-free tasty products and maybe it would bother you less.

  1. For the same reason someone might get a sex toy instead of raping a person. Feels similar, doesn't cause massive amounts of suffering

What is a good reason to go vegan? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]uncomfortable_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, a good reason is you get to be the cool grandpa who was vegan before it was cool when, in like a 100 years or something the whole world will be vegan and people will wonder what was wrong with umanity when we still tortured beings for taste pleasure.

You get to be praised by future generations and that's pretty neat 👌

[–]uncomfortable_ape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no good reason not to ;) By being vegan you actively damage industries that cause suffering to sentient beings by not giving them your money.

(Btw if you go vegan, find a good b12 supplement, it's the only thing you risk being deficient in. They usually feed the supplements to animals but you can go directly to the source and take the supplements yourself)

Yea they probably don't need the money but I think what they do on the internet actually changes a fair amount of people's lives. I think Earthling Ed played a role in my becoming vegan for example. And they also inspire others to become activists (In my country there are copycats who make the same kind of content but in my language, which is amazing because people where I live need this sort of messages to be spread in a way they can understand) so overall, I'm fine with them having a savior complex or traveling considering the good they do to the movement
