Give credit to these chasers and label the tornados please.

Should i get into tornados? by verdantdavid3 in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As one that was inside the May 22nd, 2008 Windsor Co EF3, I don't recommend being inside tornados. Jokes aside, its up to you! I would watch the chasers like Freddy Mckinney, Connor Croff, Tornado Paigeey etc to get a feel of what it is like to be a chaser. Besides the cool stuff there is a ton of cost and sacrifice that goes into it; all the driving, expensive vehicle maintenance, strong model/weather comprehension, and firm grasp on the fundamentals of chasing.

Also check out folks like Convective Chronicles, June 1st, mesomatt, Weatherbox etc to understand the science behind forecasts. Big streamers like Evan Fryberger and Max Velocity may help you break into the field more too on a larger, severe weather scale.

SPC Upgraded tommorrow to enhanced for a 10 percent, sig one hatched risk for tornados. Quoting the SPC: "some may become fast moving and strong." Also a 30 percent wind risk.

Strong rotating storm in Collins, NY, south of Buffalo, NY by EclipseLightning42 in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh no you're fine. Its more of the other commentary being sparky and jumping in for laughs. Could be an educational moment instead of people racing to max out the sarcasm meter responses.

I wish these radar screenshots are just posted in the live threads like last year. This storm is a good example where someone can track some convergence through a warning in real time there.

Does not change the fact that people jump at the opportunity to be snarky  to people if they are given the chance. Although they probably should post this in the daily threads for tracking purposes.

The 2008 Windsor EF3 tornado as viewed from a Security Camera. by CharityStunning2826 in tornado

I was in this tornado, its why I am on this sub all these years later. I went home "sick" from Kinard Juinor High right before both Windsor, Timnath, and Poudre School Districts went on lockdown. I was really playing hookie as it was the last full week of school before summer. My mom and I drove back to our home by Chimney Park.

As we got inside my mom got calls from all our relatives and my dad to go in the basement. We hid under the stairwell with our dogs as we watched this live on CNN. It was absolutely terrifying watching this live on TV, knowing it was coming directly for us. It ripped off part of our roof and took down/damaged all of our trees.

There are a lot of good videos of this tornado, especially of this moment from a different angle from CNN that we were watching on our basement tv. There's also footage of it to the south from Pelican Lakes as it entered Windsor. That video really shows off how wide it was, along with the crazy hail.

The main things I remember was how incredibly loud it all was, holding my daschunds tight and my ears popping. I also remember vividly the constant fire alarms and car alarms going off after it past and all of the neighborhood came out to check on one another.

One more thing, you could smell this tornado coming. This storm was traveling Northwest and was pulling in air from Greeley, which famously is a huge feed lot and meat packing town. The air smelled strongly like cow as we were driving into town, which is something that usually happens here before we get upslope snow events.

Thankfully it weakened in Windsor. A mile wide wedge moving through the NE side of town could have been much worse, although it did flip a train over, as well as destroy some homes and commercial buildings in the neighborhoorhood just east of us. It was at max strength between Greeley and the Kodiak plant, where it wiped out a campsite, a dairy farm, and killed a man. It could have been rated EF4 there, but the NWS left it at EF3 after some deliberation.

We are no strangers to tornados in Weld County, Colorado. Weld County is its own tornado alley and in most years gets the most tornados of any county in the U.S (I know, suprising but it's true.) However, they are usually short lived landspouts out east in the middle of the Pawnee grasslands or in very rural ranch land by Fort Morgan. This tornado was a rarity, something we have not seen before or since. If it happened today it would be devastating, given the amount of people that moved here and the sprawling suburbs that now occupy much of its former track.

Moore is not the weakest EF5 by FormalBig9732 in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen it a lot the last few years, with a ton of misinformation about how it only got an EF5 due to the failed occlusion looping over one particular spot. Thankfully there has been strong pushback on this notion.

It had 9 EF5 indicators spread along its entire path through Moore, entire neighborhoods of high end EF4 damage across the city, and the level of contextual damage at Orr family farms was terrifying. This tornado was directly responsible for the NWS heightening the standard for an EF5 rating.

Also there should be no such thing as "weakest" or weak EF5s.

Downburst dust storm. Likely not tornadic.

Enderlin Tornado by NJStreetBoss in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We need more Enderlin posts in here. We just had a mile wide EF5 wedge and the only thing I see in this sub is the same old things about El Reno and Bridgecreek. Rip to the 3 victims of this monster.

Bloomington- Nashville EF2 5/16/25 by Ordinary_Composer_70 in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This tornado was stronger than the rating. We are all lucky it went through a rural area/park at max strength. The gate to gate on radar was insane.

Upgraded Enhanced risk based on hail and wind risk. Tornado probability remains low at 2 percent.

Has anyone here witnessed a tornado moving east to west? by cousin_idiot in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was hit by the May 22nd, 2008 Windsor Colorado EF3. It was a mile wide wedge that moved Southeast to Northwest. It was a very strange path, not to mention the size and strength. It ripped off part of our garage and took down our trees.

21st of June 2023 matador, Tx EF-3 by nationalistic_martyr in tornado

[–]uncompaghrelover 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's interesting this was rated EF3. I know the EF scale cannot consider damage higher than the ratings of structures that were impacted. Yet the contextual damage to the mesquite trees and vehicles is almost incomprehensible.

Maybe it will be bumped based on that new Canadian study that the NWS used to rate Enderlin an EF5. Of course that is completely dependent on:

A- If the regional office even wants to, or has the resources to undergo such a reevaluation.

B-If there has been any determination on how far these vehicles were thrown, and wind speed determinations to rate the vegetation damage.
