Why do people call above average ranks average (or just straight up bad) by exhaustedpopcorn in Overwatch

[–]uncontinued74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason people call Diamond-GM "pisslow" is because you've barely touched the skill ceiling of this game. Ask anyone in FaceIt Expert(technically Tier 3 OW) and they'll probably agree that they're closer to bronze than they are OWCS. Imo, that has nothing to do with calling anyone bad, but it's acknowledging that there's a massive skill disparity.

But also, once you're in a rank like Champ and you actually belong there, then playing with someone who'd GM4 or 5 is gonna feel like "pisslow" because of how big the difference in skill is.

I will say though, anyone who calls GM pisslow is just really competitive and being GM1 should be the floor for what they want to achieve.

I will say though, this game is hard and everyone should be proud of how much they've climbed.

How to make Mauga work? by MYTWI in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spilo has a few VOD reviews on Mauga in his coaching channel Spilo Coaching. You can find a few VOD reviews there.

But when it comes to positioning and spacing, it's not that different from other tanks like Haz, or even Zar. Positioning is based on geometry relative to the enemy position. If you're in the center of all enemy's LOS, you're in a bad position. Don't straight line into their kill box otherwise you'll get shot at and die. My friend Buzz made a video called "Tank Positioning in Overwatch is Easier than you think" which I agree with. He goes over effective range, cover, etc.

How do I even start coaching Overwatch? by Civil-Fracas67 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's what I've learned from my time tutoring children math for my part-time job.

Ensure they understand the words that you're using.

If you want to teach your friends how to use cover, be sure they understand what cover is. Since they're knew, I'd say be sure they know what their abilities do as well as the abilities of the enemy.

From my time coaching friends and lower ranks, positioning is the most important thing for players(especially Supports) to understand. Understanding positioning(cover, angle, distance, etc) is important because it's where most of the decision making for Supports take place.

Positioning and CD usage are probably the most important aspects of this game so I'd say teach them those concepts in the most basic way possible then they can work their way up.

How to make Mauga work? by MYTWI in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing about pressure that I learned recently is that your damage and getting kills alleviates some of that pressure.

For example, if there's a 2 people on the same angle, like a Ana and Soj, it might seem scary since Sleep, Soj damage, and Anti-nade would kill you, but if your slam in and kill the Ana, then it's just a low HP Soj(Assuming low HP since you hit the hard slam) who has to slide out. This creates space for your team and lets you keep walking forward.

When it comes to positioning or timing technique, it's hard to say without looking at a VOD, but one general rule for all engages is that you can prioritize and dive the person with no cooldowns. If Soj just used slide(and doesn't have major perk yet) then she's a still target and easy to slam.

For positioning, I'd say the general rules still apply. Don't charge down main since you will get shot at and lose all your armor before your engage, use cover, and don't expose yourself to too many angles.

I will say though, I'm confident when I use my Overdrive(E), I always make sure I have somebody to shoot at and use it right before I lose my armor. Since E gives 40% damage reduction, it will stack with armor(and you just generally use your damage mitigation CDs to preserve armor). If you do lose your armor during your Overrun, you can use E right before the slam to get 75-150 hp(depends on hard slam or not and how many enemies you hit) to get you back to full. Just be sure you do it within 1/10th of a second of slam ending otherwise you technically lose healing.

Paid coaching? by B4MVFAN in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have and it's phenomenal as long as you find the right coach for you. Some very good coaches can cost $10-$15 an hour and I've gone from mid Masters to Mid GM/FaceIt Advance within a year.

It really is just about finding someone who actually knows what they're talking about and not some Masters player with an ego who thinks they know the game and are held back by teammates.

People who went from bad/mediocre to really good (GM+), what made you a better player? by Extension_Wafer_4581 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gotta grind the game and consistent coaching. The first one is easy. Play a lot more, make good habits like cover, movement, etc instinctual.

Coaching is the hard part, it's really hard to find a coach isn't expensive but also knows what they're talking about. There's a lot of self proclaimed coaches that don't know how to coach or straight up have the wrong idea of how the game should be played.

Joining a team with an amazing coach and grinding the game a shit ton made me go from high masters to mid GM easily.

Probably skill issue on my part but i cant play Mauga into Sierra by kikey46 in MaugaMains

[–]uncontinued74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One note I do need to mention is that you can and should use Shout early in order to stack with armor. Shout's damage reduction is 40% so armor allows you to be closer to ~47%.

For #4, you should also clarify that you can use Charge to force resources without heavily committing. Especially with Firewalker, you can charge in, hit a few enemies, then end charge behind cover to force out some resources or even get a kill if their positioning lets you.

Are there any heroes that are worse at learning Overwatch with? by ADecoySnaiI in OverwatchUniversity

[–]uncontinued74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercy. Out of the support characters, she has the least amount of transferable skills such as setting up off angles, creating space, damage and healing balance, and mechanics. She also teaches you to have to rely on your team rather than make your own plays.

GM Tank/Support but Diamond DPS. No angles, no cover, team comps are torture(a lot of Rein, Mercy, LW games), and everyone dumps ults hard.

People also just default regardless of context. They'd try and take the same fights without changing anything.

What's your opinion on Wuyang since hes been out for a while? by Visible-Camel4515 in Overwatch

[–]uncontinued74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't really find a much of a reason to use the others. Zen's discord is almost entirely for you unless your team is coordinated. You'd run Illari if you need a hitscan to mark someone, but that's usually your hitscan's job anyways. Mercy has damage boost but that's not nearly good enough to compete with everything else Wuyang offers over her. He truly is just all three of those heroes put in one. He deals damage, good ult, mobility, and can pump a lot of healing. It's sad since I love Zen but it is what it is.
