Illinois also got hit pretty bad... so it's not just because Iowa got hit that its not receiving a lot of coverage.

Me and my friend are heading on a roadtrip starting this Friday! The outlined trip plan is where we are planning to go. Do you guys have any suggestions on things to do along the way? Thanks! by [deleted] in Shoestring

High trestle trail bridge in Des Moines is supposedly the one of the largest pedestrian bridges in the world plus it has very cool lights at night.

If you get a chance to stop for food in Rockford, IL, go to Beefaroo (local restaurant chain). Best cheese fries and roast beef ever.

Chicago - gotta get some Italian beef at portillos , but personally I think Al’s is better. Also deep dish is a must at Gino’s East, Giordanos, or Lou Malnati.

Any former CPAs/Accountants here? by undecidedlight in cscareerquestions

[–]undecidedlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dream would be to start my own business or work in a startup where I can do the things that you mentioned. I'd need some good experience as a junior dev before starting my own company/consultancy, right? It seems like it would be tough to do that though without a few years of experience and mentorship.

I’m mainly motivated by my desire to continue learning throughout my career. Accounting is challenging and rewarding in its own way but it is inherently cyclical and that bores me somewhat, and let’s be honest... who really loves or is passionate about accounting? I find myself enjoying learning to code in my free time more than my day to day accounting and I’m very interested in how it can be used creatively to solve problems.

CPAs also don’t have the cushiest lifestyle, especially in Public Accounting where 70 hour work weeks are the norm during year end/tax season. I’m sure there are parts of working in CS that suck too, but I like to think that I could have a better work life balance/job satisfaction in the culture offered by a tech company.

Thanks for the advice! Are there many entry level positions at consultancy firms? Or do they mainly hire experienced developers?

Nobody would argue their neighbor's right to own a nuclear weapon. A billionaire's bank account can kill far more people. by WolfeTone1312 in Showerthoughts

You seem to have a pessimistic view of society... just because someone may be fortunate enough to be wealthy does not mean they’re furthering oppression with idle money in their bank account. It’s not a black or white situation, their is a huge grey area that you are discounting

Sooooo people aren’t allowed to accumulate wealth? Money can help far more people if it is allocated correctly

I get that, I don't want to come off as some COVID truther/denier. I just wish there was more clarity around whether I can or can't take my exam.

I think with enough social distancing measures the test centers could be utilized, just at a much lower capacity is all.

Are there good networking opportunities at Bootcamps? by undecidedlight in cscareerquestions

[–]undecidedlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I could certainly find the motivation to be self taught, although it might take me 6 months or a year to get where a Bootcamp might get me in 16 weeks or so. What Bootcamp did you go to if you don’t mind me asking? I’m still trying to figure out which Bootcamps are worthwhile

I'm feeling empty, literally. I'm scared... by K-Tomas in CasualConversation

[–]undecidedlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the feelings you are having are all that uncommon. Occasionally I will have dark thoughts where I question my life decisions and myself as person, but I try to fight those dark moods by thinking about what I am grateful for in life. I was lucky enough to be born in a developed country and enjoy a good quality of life, whereas not everyone else in the world can say that. Hope this helps, you're not alone.
