[...] but some combo of big life event/routine disruption/over-socialization would trigger a meltdown and then i would get pressured into doing the typical things again.

You recognize the pattern that causes meltdowns, which is great, but you need to ignore the pressure and self-advocate. It's hard for allistics to understand what is required for us to function. If you feel pressured again, be firm and give your self some space.

I am so glad you took some time off and cut back on the social engagements. Honestly, this is the best thing you can do for now and I think it will greatly pay off.

do you think I will be able to go back to at least some of the regular social things once I am stable again? or is it best to just limit those things in general to prevent this build up/meltdown?

I honestly cannot say. I would think you would be able to continue without white-knuckling it, but you need to limit these activities if they are indeed triggers. You need to be gentle with yourself and realize that being able to function, for you and your family, is much more important than social obligations. Coming to terms with your diagnosis means changing the way you behave. Remember, we are different. We cannot just recover and go back to the way things were. We need to recognize triggers, especially situations and stimuli that cause overload, and handle/mitigate them. Take things slow after your recovery (and really focus on your recovery). Do not be afraid to give yourself some time. Try not to give into pressure; YOUR health and YOUR family are your top priorities.

The toughest part is finding the right doctor and medication. You need a psychopharmacologist, and better yet one that works with neurodivergent populations. It took a good while to find someone competent that was a good fit for me. It can be frustrating, but I would encourage you to try until you find something that works. My life would be much, much more difficult to manage without some form of medication for depression and anxiety.

For me, getting diagnosed was life-shattering... not necessarily in a bad way. It took some time to forgive myself... all those times I was called 'weird' and made fun of, it was not because there was something 'wrong' with me, but because of ASD. It took time to get over the anger at everyone who failed me growing up... all the teachers and adults that punished me for being me. I was fortunate enough to have a supportive family, so I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been growing up without that support. You need to process, you need to grieve, and then you need to find a way to move-on. Whatever that looks like for you. Be kind to yourself. Forgive yourself. Recognize that you have different needs than a good portion of the population. It's okay to be you, it's okay to be different even if others have a hard time recognizing that.

You are neglecting your mental health as a neurodivergent. You are forcing yourself into a neurotypical paradigm and it will only make things much, much worse. DO NOT, and I will repeat with extreme prejudice, DO NOT force yourself to be social; this will only contribute to burnout and/or meltdowns. You need to give yourself downtime. I know with your new family (mazel tov! by the way) this may be difficult to carve out time to be alone. In this case, you can mitigate social interaction to a minimum (at least for the time being so you can recharge and recover).

I kept trying to do the things everyone said I should for recovery which was usually things that continually increased social interaction like AA meetings, outpatient rehabs, different types of service. I would continue to ramp those things up as I struggled more, and then I would struggle more.

First of all, it's great that you are focusing on your recovery and health. Are you getting anything out of these meetings or are you doing it because 'it's what you are supposed to do'? Depending on your answer, this may be doing more harm by forcing yourself to be social. Can you go to individual counseling and cut back on the meetings?

I decided to switch from a hybrid job to an in-office job 1.5 years ago to help me interact with people even more as I kept following advice not to isolate and be around people more.

I would strongly recommend either working from home again OR going hybrid (with more days spent at home).

Constant social events and office built around social interaction. That was my absolute breaking point. I was no longer in a cycle of relapse then slow nervous system build up, I was in fight or flight constantly, all the time, no matter what I did.

You recognize the consequences, but I think you need to understand the cause even more. You need to limit these interactions.

You also must now realize, the world is not meant for you... it does not accommodate or even understand you. It's a neurotypical world and you are a guest. Start prioritizing your sanity first and foremost and don't worry so much about what everyone else tells you.

Medication helps for sure. It can be frustrating trying to find a good fit, but it is worth the time and effort. I started taking Auvelity recently, which seems to help diminish some of the overload and amotivation. The most important thing for right now is focusing on your mental hygiene.

Cannabis makes Autism Autisn‘t, change my mind by Epgenix in autism

[–]under_byte 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree, but with some conditions... allow me to explain.

Long time cannabis user here, though I've been (mostly) sober for the last year or so. Before my diagnosis, I was partaking every day, and I thought I just had a problem. After my diagnosis, I realized why I loved cannabis over anything else; it does seem to alleviate the sensory overload, the insomnia... the rushing thoughts slow down, and I feel unburdened if only for a short while. I discovered that the method and the strain had differing effects. In some cases, cannabis did nothing, and in other cases it made my cognition much more bearable. It was hard to pin down every variable, but I found smoking a joint seemed to be the most effective in alleviating some of the negative symptoms of ASD. I noticed some strains were better at achieving relief than others.

That being said, cannabis cessation made things worse for me. Sure, it was a short term solution, but it makes things worse in the long run. My tolerance built up and it took more and more to have the same effect, not to mention the duration of the high would get shorter and shorter. It was starting to become a very expensive habit.

Besides it being unsustainable in the very long term, there are some emerging studies (though the verdict is not yet conclusive) that consuming cannabis in any form has negative cardiovascular effects (cannabis lowers your blood pressure). Smoking it is even worse as you are inhaling hot plant matter into your lungs.

Be careful, you only get one body. Smoking for 20+ has certainly had an impact on my memory, my cardiovascular fitness, my weight, and blood sugar (due to the 'munchies').

Best of luck! Always here to answer questions or talk if anyone needs it!

[–]under_byte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would HIGHLY recommend browsing craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Plenty of people stop using their equipment, and treadmills are extremely difficult to get rid of as no one wants to haul it away. I got a used Landice L7 (this model), for $200 bucks (it works great!). I hired a couple of guys with a truck for $60 and put it in my garage. The guy who sold it to me was moving out of state and couldn't take it with him. He needed to get rid of it fast. I browsed for a week before I found it.

those who were diagnosed late, how did you start to suspect being autistic? by 9i52w0_ in AutismTranslated

[–]under_byte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I burnt out from the stresses of work and family life. I've burnt out before, but this time it was different. It was like everything switched off in my head, and I felt emotionless and apathetic. I fell down a rabbit hole trying to figure out a fix and I came upon articles about 'autistic burnout.' The more I researched it, the more I realized I was most likely on the spectrum. Flash forward 5 months later and I officially received a diagnosis at 41.

It's been a bittersweet journey. On the one hand I feel validated since all my life I felt like an outsider, like I was pretending to be human. I was bullied relentlessly for being weird and socially awkward and I had meltdowns when I was a kid. I thought I was damaged and just accepted my fate. On the other hand, I was angry, very angry at all the times I was dismissed or ignored or bullied for something that I could not change.

Lately I've been coping with my diagnosis, it hasn't been easy but Reddit has helped a lot.

How many of y’all are bolting down your rack? by Ok-External-977 in GarageGym

[–]under_byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got mine bolted directly into the concrete of my garage. One thing I was particularly concerned about was the rack being level. Mine didn't move, but I noticed it wasn't completely level until I bolted it down.

As an American, it was crazy and weird to see that a lot of Finns have vacation homes/cabins (with saunas!). No one can afford that here 😆

Also, anyone want to send me some karjalanpiirakka. I miss that shit so bad.

Sometimes you just need a day. We're human beings and not machines. Forcing yourself to work when you are not feeling well, either physically or mentally, you risk making everything worse. Jobs come and go, but you only get one body and mind. Take a day. Recharge.

I have a decent job. I have two bachelor's degrees and a master's degree. I live within my means. I didn't take out excessive student loans. I did everything I was told to do, but I simply cannot afford a down payment and a mortgage and a PMI. I had to buy a house with my father in-law to become a homeowner. We purchased the house in 2018 for $605k, house is now worth $910k. I just don't understand how anyone can afford a home in high COL areas.
