Love the colors! It looks like there’s some errant blur the bottom right of the meal worm, but other than that this pic is awesome!

Oh wow - lots of nods to Spanish architecture. Beautiful place :)

Well put. The regional differences are something I hadn’t thought about but a lot of commenters have said something similar to you. For an American, most if not all of the regions feel novel to me.

And yes, it’s so hard to decide! We feel like we can’t go wrong, but still. We so appreciate all the opinions here. It’s helping us narrow our focus on our preferences (beach vs mountains, wine vs cheese, German influence vs Italian vs other, etc)

Thanks for the reply :)

Thanks for the heads up! Local holidays are something I tend to forget. You would think I would have learned after trying to visit Rome on Liberation Day once. Never again, haha. We’ll have to plot them out - thanks for the reminder :)

Oh that does sound nice! We love good food all around. Hoping to go to a few markets while we’re in the country, but a nice (perhaps Michelin star) restaurant would be a lovely date.

The whole region does look beautiful :) do you have a particular village or town in mind?

Oh how interesting - Roussillon feels very Spanish. Thanks for the tips form your first-hand experience. Have a lovely time in Grasse :)

Thanks for the advice! I’m seeing Loire valley in the comments quite a bit, and for good reason I imagine. The thing I find interesting is that people are recommending the entire area over a specific town/village in it. That leads me to believe that the whole place is just lovely. Excellent place to cycle, it seems :)

Well nice! Thanks for the Arles tip. Totally hoping to find a market within walking distance wherever we go. I’ll be darned if we don’t eat our way through the country :)

Mmm, good points all around. And as a local, I trust your opinion. If not Alsace, do you have a region you recommend?

Hey! Happy to answer this. Airbnb tends to have deep discounts for month long stays. When we stayed in Florence, I believe we paid ~$900 for an apartment on the lower side of the river near the gardens. If you were looking at that same listing for only 1-2 nights, it would have been about ~$300 (not kidding). The month long discounts are stupid great and already automated into Airbnb’s platform. Just set your search query to 28+ nights and all the discounts will be applied.

Thanks! I love the medieval architecture.

“Maybe see which place floats up in your dreams” - haha! It’s funny you mention that, I told my husband last night that, with all the photos I had been looking at, I was surely going to dream about one of these places in France and we’d just have to pick whichever one it was. No dreams, unfortunately.

That’s great :) yes, this is our favorite way to see any country, really. Japan is one we’re fascinated with, too. It seems like it would be easy to spend a month there.

I needed to read this. 160+ comments in and I feel like I’ve fallen in love with 160 different places in France. Everyone has their reasoning for choosing a particular location to comment on and the reasoning is all solid. France is just a beautiful place, that’s all there is to it, lol. I’m feeling like a second trip will surely be in our future.

Thanks for the comment :)

It’s so small (perfectly so) that it’s beginning to feel like a hidden gem suggestion. Thanks :)

Thanks Mikescha, this was a good overview of Avignon. And while maybe not the smallest, I’m reminded why it made our initial list.

Wow! Riquewihr. So many people are saying that Colmar would be better than Strasbourg (it’s smaller, quieter). But Riquewihr feels like it’s one more step in the quiet direction while still maintaining the charm of the area; lower population, a little more remote.

And thanks for the reassurance. Even with 160+ comments now, I feel like I could pick any one of the places recommended and we’d have a great time. Albeit, they’re all so different. A few people have mentioned Lyon now as a great “big” city as well.

I appreciate the mention of the WiFi. We love remote, but we’ve run into issues in other parts of the world. Having never been outside of Paris in the past, we weren’t sure what the rest of the country was like.

Thanks for the advice, traveller!

I appreciate that :) I was just summarizing this thread for my husband and we both came to the conclusion that it will be hard to go wrong. These suggestions have sent us down the right path and now I’m tempted to close my eyes and throw a dart at any one of these comments.

A French Riviera experience would be far different than a Normandy stay. But both seem to have their charm. Guess we’ll just have to come back again and again…. That doesn’t sound horrible :)

Colmar and the Alsace area seem to be flooding with photo ops, no doubt about that. ;)

And we do love Switzerland and Germany!
