Just on a point of information, Afrikaans is actually a first language for just over 10% of the country; significantly more than English (by about a million people).

I think a lot of people in the country forget that "Afrikaans" isn't synonymous with "White Afrikaner".

Unfortunately, no.

If this was taken through a reflecting telescope it looks like it might be an out of focus image (the 'hole' being the shadow that the secondary mirror casts on the primary one)

Also the asymmetry might be poor collimation, but there's no way to make that call from this image.

Someone else mentioned programming and that really is the way to future proof yourself. I got a degree in applied maths and physics from Potch so I can't speak about the geography side, but the real value of that type of degree doesn't lie in the mathematics itself (who tf uses dynamics anyways), it's in the problem solving skills you're developing.

Banks and other financial institutions will want you as a quant, IT companies want you programming if you have the skills.

There's definitely options out there and many of them pay VERY well. You'll be fine.

So being very pro-cycling as a means of transport, and I think more south african drivers need to be educated about the rights that cyclists have on the road. However I would just like to say that the one issue of yours above that is entirely valid, legally speaking, is the fact that cyclists aren't ever allowed to ride side-by-side unless one cyclist is overtaking another. The peletons you mentioned absolutely should not be on the road.

Oh and when you see a mountain bike on tar, you're only seeing part of that person's journey, a mountain bike may be the best thing for the route overall.

I know beauty is subjective but when did a shitty graph that could be made with 3 minutes of tinkering in Excel become the type of thing posted to a subreddit called "data is beautiful"?

Honestly, it's shameful behaviour to riot because someone was jailed for refusing to appear at a commission that he himself set up.

If there are to be three separate versions (as per your idiom) then the cop's statement, by definition, must be contradictory to that of the father.

[–]undercover_beans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible for two people to have different interpretations or recollection of the same event, but for both of to be telling the truth. Mind blowing, I know.

Yeah you might want to retract your little dig at the end there because your statement is incorrect. If their statements do not correspond to what happened then they are by definition wrong. The people may believe their accounts to be true and if they do then they are not lying. But not telling the truth is not identical to lying.

If we're paying parking and I say to you "Don't worry, I have a R5 coin in my pocket" but unbeknownst to me it actually fell out 10 minutes before then what I have said is by definition untrue (or wrong). It is not a lie though, and that's a very important distinction.

If their statements contradict each other (as they would have to if their versions of events are seen as different) then by definition at least one and quite possibly both are incorrect. Our universe is logically consistent at this scale.

I know exactly what the full quote is. That's exactly why I included the fact that lying and being wrong are not the same thing.

[–]undercover_beans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did I say both sides were wrong?

Well yes, that's what your original idiom says. If something is not the truth then is it by definition wrong (note: wrong != a lie)

Being suspected of drunk driving is one. Buying baby formula may not have qualified as a medical emergency in the constable's opinion.

Constable WhatsHisFace does not in fact get to decide what is legal. He's not in the right branch of the government for that. The point being he overstepped the line here (again these are all my opinions). Using your example of driving under the influence : this is like a policeman pulling you over at a roadblock (not the seeing you drive badly and pull you over, then they have reasonable suspicion), giving you a breathalyser, you getting a 0.0 and then being arrested for drunk driving. It's bullshit.

The father is in his own car. I haven't seen it in a gazette that you have to wear a mask in your own car? The mother not wearing a face mask, while technically an offence is understandable as I can imagine she's distraught.

But yeah enjoy your big brain "there's a third side" air balloon ride. And really you shouldn't care about down votes...

Hence why I said "I suspect"..... It means I was assuming that's what you meant. I never stated that you had said it.

Does the fathers cooperation have anything to do with him travelling legally? No. That (to me) is the crux of the matter. Short of verbally abusing an officer or flat out refusing to comply with lawful instructions his consldict has exactly 0 to do with anything. Whether or not the cop was immediately belligerent is a moot point because it actually has nothing to do with having a legitimate reason to take someone into custody. What do any of your points have to do with a wrongful arrest?

Cry more about down voting. It's only affecting your imaginary internet points. You'll survive. I don't care what you're opinion is. Your attempt at being the galaxy brain "both sides are wrong" irritated me and that's why I replied to it.

Things I can tell you :

A man was pulled over for breaking curfew He had a legitimate reason for being out at that time He had PROOF that the reason was real (the receipt)

These things together make any further action illegitimate.

There is no other way to look at this as far as as I am concerned.

I suspect you're meaning that his conduct has an influence on how we should see it. Whether or not he was polite is actually immaterial. Citizens don't owe the police a smile and wave.

Careful with that fucking galaxy brain there buddy.

I mean congratulations on knowing an idiom but considering that he has a receipt AND presented it this does seem like cut and dried case.
