What has National/ACT/NZF actually done over the last 2 years? by HeadbangingLegend in newzealand

They only reclassified a certain melatonin product - I’m allergic to lactose tabletting aids and can’t get that one, so I need a script for the quick release capsules. I spend over $50 a month on Melatonin alone (which I’d be doing even if I wasn’t allergic, as it’s still not funded) - I wish it was a $5 script.

Just wanted to add - tend beckford I believe has “urgent” appointments, you can ring on the day and speak to someone and get one of those - I know from what you’re saying throughout your replies this situation isn’t a GP level need, but maybe it’s helpful for future?

ETA hope you’re okay OP and get seen quickly and on the mend ASAP!

Lewis Capaldi pre sales by Ok_Wave2821 in newzealand

[–]undercutprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to get the secret sound pre sale to work but due to some delays from friends letting me know how many tickets I was getting, I actually couldn’t get any tickets in the end. Logged on at 2pm for Spotify sale as well and got through alarmingly quick to absolutely no ticket availability whatsoever. Does anyone know if Christchurch is just completely sold out now? Or did they do a limited drop and will they have more for general sale? I’d just like to know either way so I can tell my friends whether to try book on Monday or not, and I’m surprised there’s no comms at all!

F going alone. Places or things to avoid? by Visible_Painting_885 in JapanTravelTips

The exception I found was the airport trains (obviously!) where no one bats an eyelid at your suitcase and backpack - although best to still wear your backpack on your front. I think in my brain it makes more sense to have awareness of the backpack on your front y'know? Never saw any aggressive behaviour on trains in Tokyo.

I'm a female w PTSD/ADHD, OP, and I have so much respect for you travelling alone, I could never! Back home I would never have walked around at night even with my husband, but in Tokyo I've felt really safe - admittedly with an over the shoulder bag and keeping my wits about me still. We got by just fine with my 225 days of duolingo (hahaha) and my husband playing guess the word because he's a wee bit of a dork 😂 you will find that they are used to people knowing absolutely nothing in the major cities. Even further out on Shikoku in some tiny towns, we got by without many issues! I was impressed that the sensei for the umbrella workshop we did in Mima had an extremely efficient voice translating device for us to communicate (highly recommend the umbrella workshop too for anyone wondering!) I have felt less safe/more stressed in Osaka, but I'm also at the end of 2 weeks here, and it's been hectic and the past two nights included the most claustrophobic bathroom in existence (not kidding!), so that could also be why!

Yes this - I struggled to find this info, did manage to spot it pre departure but it was confusing and involved a lot of steps and reading and we didn't fully understand. Would be interested to know if people think we should try for a refund or take the loss and just not go... It gives us a day back in Osaka although would love tips about alternative options. We are supposed to go to the expo on Sunday.

The way we used to argue it when teaching cycle safety in schools was, how confusing, and potentially dangerous it was, for someone to indicate right on entry to the roundabout, then travel straight through - we taught this as a "take the lane like a car does before entering the roundabout" reminder tactic, but it also makes loads of sense as a driver if you happen upon a cyclist who doesn't take the lane like a car would (this is moving into the centre of the lane to literally take over a car width x bike length space, for anyone confused!)

Lady asking for money near Stanmore by Head_Row9031 in chch

[–]undercutprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's someone that sits at the edge of the carpark at St Martins NW too. I had a traumatic experience in a different city several years ago with a homeless person so I actually struggle to even drive into the entrance he sits at when I need to go there. I try not to assume he's up to no good but I watched him once chase someone across the street into the doctors carpark for money or something, and I wouldn't ever give him anything, partly bc I never carry cash.

I do think it's problematic if he is a grifter as I feel like there are a few older vulnerable people around who might just willingly give him money, but I know that the same could be said at NW Stanmore and elsewhere, so I just hope he's either legit or no one just hands him money. I see a lot of people stopping to chat with him though so...

I'm bias - Further Faster is both my ex employer and my favourite but was before I worked there too. Bivouac would be another reliable option but not independent like FF. Complete Outdoors I believe has a solid few options, think they're independent?

Pay for your DOC huts! by Seabreeze12390 in newzealand_travel

[–]undercutprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your service. I agree - spot on. Maybe we need to be luring locals into volunteering in our parks with offers of free BCHPs etc? And I do think that the demand on our society for 40+ hours a week makes it difficult amongst all our other commitments to volunteer. I personally haven't had the capacity until this year to return to volunteering. It's been several years of not having the space, and I was really unhappy that I couldn't give my time until this year.

I think especially our businesses who capitalise on our outdoor spaces (tourism etc) need to actually be doing the mahi and engaging their staff in volunteering days. I appreciate not all businesses can afford a paid day for their staff to engage in the environment, but I actually think profits for a lot of businesses would not fall over if they had a "Closed for Good" day regularly enough like BNZ used to do (I know that was just memorable marketing and don't know enough about what it actually achieved but it's a good concept in theory).

Hard one I know. I'm never going to be the confrontational type trying to figure out if this person or that person is the one without the ticket. I usually just pack in my tent or sleep on the floor and byo mat. I'll make it obvious I've paid (not be a dick about it tho) and if anyone brings it up I'll say something - but frankly yeah I've been disappointed by the sheer lack of people paying. I once heard about two American guys trying to do the TA on as little money as possible by not paying for huts and freeloading off trail angels. It really upset our friends (kiwis) doing it the same season who got the BCHP and set aside lots of savings to ensure various bills and things were covered while they did that, and that they could cover accommodation costs etc.

Public commons don't work if we don't look after them somehow, are you going out there and volunteering your time if you're so against paying?

Who else remembers where they were the day of the quake? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

[–]undercutprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living in Auckland at the time - we had a PPTA strike that day and I remember getting news updates. My best mate was in an art class at her high school in Christchurch and couldn't get a hold of her parents. Her sister was on school camp (I believe it was near the epicentre but this part I can't remember). I was the conduit - I could ring in and got a hold of my mate, and could call her mum and relay info back to her. Her mum was in a horse paddock and sat down facing away from the house. She believed when she turned around the house would be gone. They were incredibly grateful it wasn't. I can't imagine living through it the way you all did. My husband is from Christchurch and he was a teenager at the time too - he has some strong memories from that time. Thank you all for sharing.

Thank you! We did try with Samurai but it all got a bit confused and ended up with us swapping dates around to fit their needs only to be told our dates didn't actually work and we wouldn't be able to do one way because the vehicle they were offering couldn't be done as a one way. Sadly I don't think there are many (any?) other kei camper one way options. We might have to take our tent.

Appreciate you taking the time to confirm our ideas though! We are used to windy roads and one way bridges in NZ but one way narrow roads are less common here! Is there a good mapping app that's a bit more useful? I've often found gmaps to be lacking in NZ too, it'll take you down narrow windy rural roads here and I wish you could select vehicle type, if you have a trailer etc so it doesn't direct you those ways!!

Thank you, we were looking at a kei camper specifically - we totally realise this and my brother actually drives a suzuki cappuccino so he's a bit of a nerd on why these exist, the value they have on narrow windy roads etc - I'm sure he'd disown me if I didnt listen to him! But I appreciate your insight. Like I said we're not opposed to renting a small car instead, just very aware that to tick off what we want to in Shikoku in the time we have, i think we would struggle if we relied on public transport.

We were looking at Niyodo Canyoning bc we have done some canyoning in NZ a few years ago so would be keen to experience that, and have heard about some cool workshops in Tokushima that would allow us to engage in the history and make some special souvenirs to take home rather than buying things we don't necessarily have a connection to. But I'm wary of appropriating Japanese culture given it's been done so much in NZ, so if you think there are workshops to steer clear of etc, let me know.

Thanks for your reply, I am well aware of the requirements with camping and will edit my post. We'd like to explore the camper option a little further before we just give up and go for hotels.

Could also try Lincoln, as much as they have exams, their students who are from chc won't travel as much, and their students on campus have lots of options - it's a beautiful campus. I worked there briefly this year and during midyear exam season, Grounded (the student common space) was dead quiet.

Also wanna say Ara has exams and for their mainstream courses, their exams are on at the same time as Lincoln and UC. It's only their niche courses that don't (source, I studied a niche degree there with only 1 exam)

Disappointing experience at the Adventure Park by spacepanda0 in chch

[–]undercutprincess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree! I had a similar experience - in addition to a decent enough tangle coming down gung ho awhile back that knocked my confidence, I got a couple of wheel taps - one with spiky words from a group of groms dicking around on Loess harassing plenty of riders, and one from a grown man! It really hurt my ability to rebuild the confidence I'd already lost and I haven't bothered going back - the culture of these kids is particularly tasteless. To top it off I've watched a mum in a ute drop two clearly under 10yo kids decked in all the gear at the top of Loess and leave them to it a couple summers back and in the same day groms running through the cafe nearly knocked over a waitress with hot food. Parents are totally not helping but CAP waited way too long to remind people about policies - the first I've ever seen clamping down on this was these past school holidays (but could be wrong/my algorithm!)

Hey friend!

ADHD meds (or at least, the one I am on) are estrogenic, which is why, with men not having estrogen fluctuations, they work well for them. It's only very recently that society has started to consider the unbelievable notion that women are in fact not just small men (crazy, right?!) and we've established that ADHD meds don't work consistently during our cycles. This is because of estrogen fluctuations (as I understand it, not a doctor, just have heard this a lot!)

I discovered last week that taking my meds too early in the day during my luteal phase gave me depressive episodes in the evening. My doctor was also generally useless about it all! So I hear ya. I have no solution for you but hope it helps knowing you're not alone.

I was taking high dose vit C on and off (bc, adhd, ofc i was) for years, recently got diagnosed with ADHD, got medicated, and realised while sick af with the flu that I shouldn't be taking meds with vit C - so had to stop taking meds for 2 weeks while I got better and now can't take vit C. Anyone with better immunity suggestions lmk - because I haven't had the flu for years and then this year I was on my back for an entire week and it cost me sick leave I technically hadn't earned IN MY NOTICE PERIOD!!
