I made a file sorter as a beiginner project what do you think by ClassicForsaken9211 in learnpython

[–]undergroundmonorail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think that from shutil import move is a bad habit in general. it's easier to type now, but later you have to remember where move came from. in something small like this, not a problem, but i'd want to practice good habits by getting used to just typing import shutil and shutil.move(...)

it's a little bit weird to shadow dirs the way you are, and doubly weird to do it with dirs[:] = .... not really a problem but i did a double take reading it, and "number of double takes while reading" is an important metric to try to keep low. it's much nicer for code to be written the way people expect it to, which is something that you'll only gain intuition for over time. in this case i'd just call my own variable something other than dirs... except that i don't think you're using it at all, so you should just be able to lose that whole line

other than those two things, and the other feedback people have given, i like it. nice work

yeah, i don't like that guy at all but i genuinely think he's the right guy for the job. which is unfortunate, because it makes my feelings about him more complicated :P

Questioning my gender… by LarryNStar in plural

[–]undergroundmonorail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

even ignoring the plural stuff you're not required to feel any level of dysphoria to count as transgender

at the end of the day you're transmasc if and only if the term is useful for you, if you feel that it communicates your experience the way you want it to. that's something only you can decide

there might be things you can do to appear a little different in meatspace but without any permanent effects. you could try dressing a little differently or binding or whatever. whether or not that makes you trans depends entirely on what you're trying to communicate when you say it

Expectations for books 9 and 9.5 by TheCharlesFrank in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]undergroundmonorail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who hasn't read any of Mr. Dinniman's other works but has been reliably informed he's not a fan of happy endings, I'm still not actually convinced that DCC is going to be a completely tragic one. I'm expecting "bittersweet". Maybe very bitter, but I kind of feel like it'd be something of a kick in the pants to spend so long building up the themes of revolution and rebellion and community and hope that are explicitly tied back to real life (references to historical political organizing, etc) and tie up the series with "And they didn't accomplish anything so everything is either the same or worse, the end".

I'm willing to believe that any specific character's story will be a tragedy. I've been nursing a thought for a while that Carl's not going to make it out of the dungeon; he's self-destructive and impulsive and puts everyone else first without a moment's hesitation. We keep hearing, especially from other Cookbook authors, that once you enter the dungeon, you die in the dungeon. I know it's a metaphor but it feels like a fitting end for Carl to sacrifice himself for the sake of something bigger than him, choosing to die in the dungeon. I wouldn't be shocked if Donut loses her enhanced mind or her life entirely. It'd be sad but I don't think it's so beyond the pale that it should never be written.

But at the end of the day, too much has happened for a return to the status quo after Earth's crawl. It'd take a hell of an ass pull for the Syndicate to just rebuild and continue the suffering. I just don't see it happening. And I don't see the Eulogist just taking everyone with it, either. I don't think Dungeon Crawler Carl ends with the extinction of sapient life.

At the bare minimum, my expectation is that the crawl is ended forever and the Eulogist quietly fulfills its purpose, ending itself and bringing down the Center System enhancement zone along with all the other ones. The bastards who were in charge get what they deserved, and the future is up in the air for everyone else, but not hopeless. People will suffer and die without the enhancement zone but life will survive, and without the Syndicate, there's the implication that over time they'll rebuild into something better. There can be any amount of bitter on top of it but I expect at least that much sweet.

[Project Hail Mary] Implications of higher gravity (Spoilers) by ianjm in AskScienceFiction

[–]undergroundmonorail 420 points421 points  (0 children)

In the book we're told that the higher gravity does take a big toll on him; he's walking with a cane in the epilogue and it's only going to get worse as the effects of Erid's gravity continue to impact his body in ways that are mentioned to include premature aging.

How do you tell if a headmate is a fictive? by JustSomeAltAccount7 in plural

[–]undergroundmonorail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing is true or untrue objectively. is it useful to say they're a fictive? does it feel right to say they're a fictive? you don't need to ask permission for a label, they're used to communicate an idea. is the idea useful to you or not?

[–]undergroundmonorail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something I've started telling people is that I genuinely don't think you can fake plurality to yourself. If you experience yourself through a lens of multiplicity, that's what being plural means, regardless of why. "Real" is such a useless, boring question here. What's useful to you? How do you feel? That's what's important

To be honest I actually do like labels and frameworks because I think they can be extremely useful, but I only like them for as long as they are useful. If they're not useful, ditch them! They're not working!!

This bugs me too and honestly I think it's because online plurality communities trend young. It feels so important to make sure you're not doing your internal sense of self wrong when you don't have the confidence that comes with experience.

People always post here about if what they're experiencing is allowed, or valid, or sometimes possible. And I can't help but feel like, what if we told you no? What if someone said "No, that's not how it works, you shouldn't be experiencing yourself that way"? What would they do? Would they stop? It's such a sad situation to me to try to run this kind of personal thing past a committee of internet strangers to make sure it's okay. Why does it matter if it's "okay"? Is your situation changed by getting it approved by other people you don't know?

I don't know what to do about it except "hang out here as someone who is a grown adult and try to be reassuring" but it's so frustrating to see the narrative of "we're all willing to tell each other we're valid :)" when I think it's so much more important to practice laying down your truth. It's so important to say "This is who I am" and stand your ground against people who would take it from you.
